How I Became a Successful Chemical Engineering Manager
1. My Name is Michael Marsland and
this is how I became the successful
and happy businessman I am today.
2. When I graduated from high school I traveled to
Africa for 2 months and while I was there I was
inspired by the efficiency of the way they do
things; such as build houses and make clothes.
This inspired me to go in to Chemical
Engineering to help our society become more
efficient.
3. As soon as I got back I applied to a university
and got accepted. I was trying to get my
bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
While I was in school I got a job as a part-time
waiter. It took me 5 years to get my full
bachelor’s degree, but I interned for a company
for the last year.
4. When I finally got my degree I went to work as a
junior Engineer While I was working I got to do
mostly small projects, I did process improvement
and product design as well as writing reports for
the company. I was well worth it because for the
two years I was there I made110,000 dollars! Which
to me now doesn’t seem like much but back then I
remember it was great! After I Finished my work I
decided to take the Professional Engineering Exam
so that I could get a better job in Chemical
Engineering.
5. I studied for a months and the took my exam and passed I
figured now that I had a couple year of work experience and
the exam under my belt I could get a job as an Project Engineer.
I applied to a couple places and after about a month I got the
job at a manufacturing plant in Vancouver. I worked there for
one year full time and made 70,000 a year. After that I decided
to go back to school and get my Post-Graduate Degree in
Chemical Engineering. While I was doing getting that I was still
working during the summers as a project Engineer. As soon as it
got my degree I went to work as a Production manager. As I
Production Manager I got to oversee many projects and
manage some of the other workers. After a year of that I
decided I wanted to become an Engineering manager so I went
back to school and studied Business Administration.
6. While I was there I met some of my best friends to
date! I studied enough but still had time to party
and hang out with my friends. I got my degree in
Business Administration and now I was fully
qualified for a job as an Engineering Manager. I
applied back in Vancouver and luckily I was
welcomed back as a Manager.
7. Now I am happily married to my wife who I met
while I was in school and we have two children, a
lovely 2 year old girl and a strong 4 year old boy. I
still work as a manager in Vancouver which I have
been doing for 5 years now. I get paid 150,000 a
year and I oversee all production and deal with
administrative duties. My job is fairly save which my
wife is thankful for except sometimes if there is a
chemical leak when I’m working in the lab. I get
evenings and weekend off and 25 day vacation a
year so I can spend a lot of time with my kids.
8. I hope to advance and make a change in the
world of how they do think and how safe they
are for us and for the environment. I also hope
to be a good father to my children like my dad
was good to me! I have to thank the Africans I
met for showing me the potential in the world
and the change that one man could make.
