Shubert is feeling very grumpy due to the rainy weather. He refuses to eat, do homework, or take a bath. The next day at school, he steps on Etta the worm and remains upset. His teacher, Ms. Bookbinder, notices how grumpy he is and tries to help him feel better using "grumpy cream" but it does not work. She teaches the class deep breathing exercises to help Shubert go from feeling "bug crazy mad" to "caterpillar calm." They are able to successfully use the breathing techniques to help calm Shubert's body down.
5. He was even
angry at
school! Look,
he is stepping
on Etta the
worm! “Ouch,”
says Etta!
6. Ms. Bookbinder
comes over and
tells Etta to use
her words.
“move” say Etta
so Shubert
moves. Shubert,
your shoulders
are scrunched up
and your face is
frowning. Your
body is telling me
you are upset!
8. Shubert still feels
grumpy so he
goes over by
himself. Ms.
Bookbinder tells
the class that
Shubert feels
mad. The cranky
cream didn’t
work because he
is oodle doodle
bug crazy mad!!
9. When we feel
upset we can take
big deep breaths
like this. You do
it. Okay wow, this
is making me feel
calm. How about
you? I feel ooey
dooey caterpillar
calm!
Hold Shubert Puppet to introduce this book. Then hand the puppet to the children. Instruct the children that turning the page is the signal to hand Shubert to another person. Mrs. Bookbinders bits of wisdom are inserted at the appropriate place for teaching. These books are like Pixar movies. There is a children’s theme and an adult theme running at the same time.
