The debut of a stunning new voice in fiction— a novel both heartbreaking and
transcendent
After four harrowing years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia
and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from
the coast. To this isolated island, where the supply boat comes once a season and shore
leaves are granted every other year at best, Tom brings a young, bold, and loving wife,
Isabel. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a
baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a
living baby.
Reviews
This was the best novel I have read recently. I enjoyed the way it related to the real
human effect of WW1 on people. The captivating writing style and the subtle imaginary
used had me right in there with the characters, unable to put this book down. The
awards Stedman received for this work were well deserved. I hope there will be more.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well defined and realistic. While I wanted
things to work out differently there was really no other way for things to have worked
out. It is well worth the read.

Absolutely excellent. It is almost an epic poem with beautiful phrases depicting emotions
through natural events... like paintings created through words. It was so beautiful and so
sad all at once. Can't wait for her next book.
