2. The eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 was
the worst volcanic disaster in U.S. history;
however, it offered scientists an
exceptional opportunity to examine and
study a large volcanic eruption, which has
enriched scientific knowledge of
volcanoes.
On May 22, 1980, the Pac-Man video game
was released in Japan and by October of
the same year it was released in the United
States. The yellow, pie-shaped Pac-Man
character, who travels around a maze
trying to eat dots and avoid four mean
ghosts, quickly became an icon of the
1980s. To this day, Pac-Man remains one of
the most popular video games in history.
3. The wreck of the RMS Titanic is located
about 370 miles (600 km) south-southeast
of the coast of Newfoundland, lying at a
depth of about 12,500 feet (3,800 m).
At 1:23 a.m. on April
26th, 1986, reactor four at the nuclear
power plant near Chernobyl, Ukraine
exploded, releasing more than a
hundred times the radiation of the
bombs dropped on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki. Thirty-one people died
shortly after the explosion and
thousands more are expected to die
from the long-term effects of
radiation.
4. In 1988 Pan Am Flight 103, a London to
New York flight, exploded over Lockerbie,
Scotland. A total of 270 people were killed,
259 of which had been on board the plane
and another 11 had been killed from the
debris that hit the ground.
