Postmodernism And Language
Postmodernism started in the 20th century and it involved art, architecture, and literature.
Postmodern philosophers believe that the world cannot be understood objectively nor there is an absolute truth.
Moreover, they think that everyone perceives the world in his own way, there is no common grand between people in
understanding the world or perceiving it. While Modern philosophers think the opposite: "We are able to comprehend
reality because categories exist within our minds that actively generate perception. These categories, Kant assumed,
are universally the same in all people." (postmodernpreaching.net).
Postmodern philosophers encourage questioning, what seems to be obvious. This is the right thing to do. It is wrong to

Can language objectively describe truth? Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) believes that language cannot objectively
describe truth because each language will add different meanings to the same text. "All language is socially
conditioned. We understand the world solely in terms of our language games – that is, our linguistic, social
constructs." (postmodernpreaching.net).
According to science, things have changed since newton time. Back then people believed in rationality and absolutes.
But now in the 20th century with the development of science, came to light the relativity theory. The relativity theory
threw away the absolutes. "Russell expressed the view that once people became used to the idea of relativity, it would
forever change their way of thinking. They would abandon a belief in absolutes and begin to regard all concepts as
relative" (postmodernpreaching.net).
"The correspondence theory of truth caused people to believe that scientific truth equals absolute truth.
Postmodernism corrects this by denying the equivalency between scientific truth and absolute truth. All scientific
conclusions are now understood to be tentative simply because no one has ever made the infinite number of
observations required to learn if there are any exceptions."(postmodernpreaching.net). A class full with postmodernists

Modernism And Postmodernism
In the same manner in which one looks to structuralism to identify the main ideas of post structuralism, one must look
to modernism to understand postmodernism. Modernism in literature reflected the same rejection of fundamental
elements as musical, visual art, and architectural styles. More specifically, "traditional realism" in literature was
abandoned" in favour of experimental forms of various kinds." (Barry 79) Modernism enjoyed its highest point of
popularity between 1910–1930, especially reflected in the writings of English speaking writers such as T. S. Eliot,
James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf; and in the writings of German and/or French speaking writers like Marcel Proust or
Franz Kafka. These writers sought to place a new emphasis on impressionism; deviate from traditional prose and
poetry style by using fragmented writing styles; and increase subjectivity of character and narrator, no doubt to
distinguish themselves from the overtly moral liberal humanist model. In general, this represented a shift in literature
"dedicated to experimentation and innovation." (Barry 79) What then, was postmodernism? Contrary to the potentially
misleading misnomer, postmodernism, rather than a continuation of modernist practice, represents more of a reaction
it. It is important to recognize that there exists "two opposed moods or attitudes" (Barry 80) between modernism and
postmodernism. As Barry states, "J. A. Cuddon's entry in his Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory

Analysis Of ' The Era Of Postmodernism '
Throughout the history of man, human beings impose form and order on all aspects of life in order to reassure
themselves there is a grand design behind life's seeming uncertainty. Evidence of this desire are social constructions
such as religion and time. However, the strong need to understand the word through concrete systems is also seen in
smaller details of daily life, such as fiction novels. The average person enjoys realistic fiction, or fiction that mirrors
what one perceives as the "the human experience." One method that fiction uses to enforce this desired reality is the
use of a single overarching storyline, or metanarrative. The era of Postmodernism upended this notion that a novel
should only have one grand metanarrative, and this upending is based in a reality closer to one's lifespan where
experiences are not singular or linear, but an amalgam of events and memories which overlap, shift priorities, and
transcend strict chronological time. Two Postmodern novels that challenge the concept of a single metanarrative by
including various micronarratives, employed to confuse what story takes precedence over the other, are Vladimir
Nabokov's Pale Fire and Italo Calvino's If On a Winter's Night a Traveler. Nabokov employs the concept of
intertextual conversation between different sections of the book in Pale Fire while Calvino makes use of the reader's
self–awareness of their role as an active participant in the reading of If On a Winter's Night a Traveler to

An Overview of Postmodernism Essay
The political climate at the beginning of the 1940's and the changes taking place all around the world drastically
influenced the face of contemporary society. The invasion of Poland by Germany on 1st of September 1939 was the
first stone thrown in the face of freedom of expression and liberty out of the many that followed for the next decades.
The dawn of the Second World War was one of the premises that forced many European artists, pioneers par
excellence in their field, through their French or German inherited status, to immigrate across the ocean. Due to the
exile, the art centre also moved overseas, from Paris to New York, offering a new opportunity for American art to be
the initiator in what was generally accepted as the new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This description is trying to clearly position postmodernism in a specific time frame and outline its main
characteristics. However, when consulting the Macmillan Dictionary (2010) the description offered is significantly
less conclusive:
"ideas, attitudes, or styles of art, literature, or thinking that have developed after modernism, often as a reaction
against "
The main accent is set on the chronological aspect of postmodernism and its logical and historical flow offering the
reader not enough information to identify a clear period or any particular feature. Only by comparing the two
definitions, a very small part of the available explanations on the subject, and at the same time reading them together
one can identify one of the main components of the movement: diversity in all its aspects. The difference in these
definitions is not just a simple coincidence and should be taken as a figure of speech for the description of the entire
period. During this time critics and writers, artists and architects etc. have tried to find a proper explanation for the
changes they were being part of, concretised in what became known as Postmodernism.
During the 1960s 'attacks' started appearing against the elitism shown by modernism. One of the first voices pointing
at modernism's faults was the poet Karl Shapiro , who in 1959 in an article for The Times Book

Postmodernism : Modernism And Postmodernism
Modernism and Postmodernism are both two important eras in design. Postmodernism takes a lot of concepts from the
modernism era. Both modernism and post modernism focus on Style, Social analysis, Cultural Context, Philosophy,
Politics, Human experience, Machine aesthetics, and the constant transformation of the "New". An interesting fact of
the Modernism and Postmodernism is the use of the psychology and philosophy themes 1. Subjectivity 2.History 3.
Culture and 4. Theoretically divers aesthetics and ideologies. What differentiates the two from each other is the
postmodernism is more politically resistant, deconstructive, absent, uses the Signifier, Anarchy, and Dadaist. In

Postmodernism In The Things They Carried
Postmodernism is a style of writing which is still used often today. It is a response to modernism because
postmodernism questions the norm. Essentially, postmodernism use is being used because everything else has been
taken, so by blending in certain creations together, you can make something new. In postmodernism, authors like Tim
O'Brien, who wrote The Things They Carried and A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers, both
authors are telling the reader a story in the first person with stream of conscious, just like a modernist writer would do.
However, the two authors, similarly, are unreliable at points in the books because they both change the meaning of
their own true stories and admit to tricking the reader multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Dave is describing his mother's stomach he says, "I don't ask questions. Before, when I said that I asked questions,
I lied" (12). Although this is a small detail in the book, Eggers feels as if he has to lie to convince the reader that this is
a true story. By saying that he lied at the end, it is a postmodernist idea because you are not supposed to say whether
you lied or not in your story. By telling the reader that he doesn't ask questions, his trust level drops in the mind of the
readers. Another spot in the memoir in which Eggers stretches the truth is when he is talking about his father.
Although Eggers father died before his mother did, he switches up the chronological order by blending in the two
dying parents together. After Dave, Beth, Toph, and the mom are about to go to the hospital, Eggers dimensions the
death of his father by saying, "You should have seen my father's service" (33). From talking about his dying mother to
his dead father, Eggers blends the two moments together because that is the way he felt about them as he was writing
this memoir. Although he can tell the story as he would like to, by moving the story into different parts, it can become
confusing for the reader and cause some belief to decrease in Eggers story on how everything

Postmodernism On The Movie Zombieland
While watching a movie, we often refer to the movie's genre's category when we browse the cinema titles. We pick
and choose according to our likings, purchase a ticket and enjoy the movie. Simple. However, what comes to mind in
this industry and the art of film making is the evolution of the existing film genres in today's wide market of movies.
The movie genres that we have seen over the years have constantly altered itself and improved – from the horror genre
for example – Nosferatu (Murnau.F.W , 1922) to Insidious: Chapter 3 (Whannel. L, 2015) and then a blend of genres
as seen in Zombieland (Fleischer. R, 2009). As Hayward. S (2006, p. 185) puts it "Clearly, genres are not static, they
evolve with the times, even disappear." In this essay, we shall discuss on the proper way to observe genres and the

R, 2009).
When analysing a genre, Bordwell and Thompson (2009, p. 331) states that a genre consists of conventions which
filmmakers use it to determine the elements to work with, while viewers use it as an indication of what to expect from
the film they are watching. When we watch a movie, our minds are constantly finding significant elements to latch on
and to relate, when our minds have mapped out a certain recognisable pattern in the film, we can finally categorise the
genre of film that we are watching and thus decide whether to agree with the stated genre or otherwise. Out of the
years of genre theory, theoreticians have acknowledged the significance of semantics and syntax but only as separate
entities. In their discourse, the two approaches state that the semantic approach can be used for a wide number of films
but lacks in descriptive power while the syntactic is the vice versa. From "A Semantic /Syntactic Approach To Film
Genre" (Altman. R, 1984), Rick Altman proposes an approach of combining both semantic and syntactic approaches
to analyse a film's genre. In his journal, he discussed

Postmodernism : Modernism And Postmodernism
This paper outlines, argues and evaluates the key ideas used in debates about modernism and postmodernism. In order
to understand and evaluate the key ideas the terms modernism and postmodernism had to be defined. I found much
difficulty in finding a clear and concise definition of the two terms and so I researched and formed a train of thoughts
into one definition. Modernism, beginning in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century within Europe
and America, was a movement mainly pioneered by artists who focused on the separation of their craft from the status
quo of the society during that period mainly by the use of experimentation with content, form and materials (Long &
Wall, 2012). Many believe that the basic principles of modernism can be derived from the Idea of Progress, which
emerged in the 18th century Age of Enlightenment with the idea that people themselves could develop and change
their society. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernization_theory, 2014). The post modernism term was much harder
to explain and so in addition to outlining and evaluating the key ideas of postmodernism I have also highlighted the
works and examples of the theorist Jean Baudrillard and the artist Marcel Duchamp, among others, to further explain
the term post modernism. This paper is separated into five subtopics where I go in–depth into each category so as to
give a fair analysis and evaluation on both modernism and post modernism.

Characteristics Of Postmodernism
It is also known that postmodernism addresses many cultural issues that were not seen as issues before. Modernism is
set in its roots within a patriarchal and racist culture dominated by white heterosexual men (Palmer, 2018). There are
many things that have come with postmodernism, like many different types of equal rights and cultural identity.
However, many of these have also come up in a post–postmodernism culture, which seems to follow the events of
9/11 in 2001.
Postmodern Millennials The Millennial generation or Gen Y, has grown up with this postmodern idea along with many
other factors. In a video I watched, Millennials in the Workforce, Simon Sinek talks about how millennials are self–
interested and lazy, which are also characteristics associated with postmodernists. Millennials are a generation that
really does not have a definite beginning, but some agree that this generation started in the mid–1980s and ends
somewhere between late 1990s and early 2000s (Sinek, 2017). Sinek can break down four characteristics that
contribute to a millennial's unhappiness: parenting, technology, impatience, and environment. As we look at parenting
many millennials say that were subject to failed parenting strategies. They were told they were special all the time,
they received participation medals. Many times, Millennials' parents would complain to the school board or teachers
because their child did not earn an A in a class or was not input into honors classes even if they did

Modernism Versus Postmodernism
Modernism vs. Postmodernism
Post–modernism follows and shares many of the same ideas as modernism. Though, at the same time, they differ in
many ways. These distinctions can be seen in the two works of literature, "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller and
"Glengarry Glen Ross" by David Mamet. "Death of a Salesman" represents the modernist literature. Modernism is a
style of literature that came about after World War I in Europe. It emerged in the United States in the late 1920s.
Modernism was the response to the commotion, which occurred during World War I. The narrator in the play is
limited and omniscient; he or she observes the thoughts and actions of Willy, Biff, and other central characters in the

In the play, it is seen that money drives people to do crazy things and only leads to their downfall. Postmodernism
proves to embrace the low culture, where the idea of elite, power, and money is not as important. Trying to make
meaning becomes impossible and repressive and millions die in desire to create a great collective. Postmodernism is
more accepting in regards to chaos. The idea of being okay in a world where there are no universal truths had become
accepted. This can be seen in the play, because no characters are represented as true. They are living in a false world.
This false world is made up of a false business with false leads and false people trying to sell them. When Shelly steals
the leads, he is not doing anything different, because the leads are non–existent, imaginary properties that he stole to
steal the money of other people, so in reality he is not stealing something of value and can relate to the rest of the
characters. With this example, it is also seen that sympathy flows around. Mamet allows reader's to like and relate to
Shelley in some instances, like when he needs the money for his daughter, but at the same time Marnet allows us to
dislike Shelley at some instances, because of his lying, scamming, and stealing. Our sympathy moves for different

Postmodernism In Post Modernism
Post–Modernism is a revolutionary era that follows Modernism and developed in mid to late twentieth century. It
takes a changed and developed approach across philosophy, art, criticism, and architecture and makes a departure from
Modernism. The term Postmodernism is applied to an era that both follows modernity, and also acts as a host of
movements that emerged during the era especially in art, music, and literature, marked by the tendencies against
modernism. It is more like the 'rejection of conventional social norms', followed by the 'Counter–culture' movement.
'Counter–culture' movement spreads massively in Europe and North America during mid 20th century, which is a
subculture whose norms of behavior and values substantially differ from those of dominant mainstream society and
culture. Its 1960's to 1970"s development generated a unique brand of its own in the field of notable literature,
including comics and cartoons.

Victorian novel in structure and detail, while pushing the traditional boundaries of narrative in a very modern manner.
It explores the fraught relationship of gentleman and amateur naturalist Charles Smithson and Sarah Woodruff, the
former governess and independent woman with whom he falls in love. Fowles has represented Sarah Woodruff and

also receives attention for its treatment of gender issues. The novel builds on Fowles' authority in Victorian literature,

Postmodernism And Its Influence On Modern Society
Postmodernism is a complex term that has tried to be describes by many different theorist in many different ways.
Some say that it is so hard to define because it is an idea that emerges across and variety of disciplines. In its most
basic form Postmodernism can be describes at "departure from modernism and is characterized by the self–conscious
use of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic styles and media, and a general distrust of theories"
(Oxford Dictionary, 2010). So with this definition in mind we must look at modernism and the movement away from
this to postmodernism. We will also look at the characteristic of postmodernism and how it is represented in the media
culture.
The phrase 'postmodernism' was used to depict a style in architecture in the early 1960's, this style used components
from the past architectural styles and combined them to create buildings. This term was coined and used by cultural
and political theorist to express contemporary Western and global society, two of theorists which will be discussed is
Fredric Jameson and Linda Hitcheon who have apposing views on the theory.
Fredric Jameson is an American literary critic and Marxist political theorist. Jameson argues that a shift in the
economic society began in the late 1960's, and that the world is moving into a phase he calls "late capitalism."
Jameson view is that there is a link between the economic changes that has lead to a postmodern style of living,

Modern Art And Postmodernism
A Japanese postmodern artist Yayoi Kusama, had an art technique of drawing and painting dots. Her art form was
influenced by her psychological problems in which she expressed herself in an artistic form of painting dots. Both
literature arts and the visual arts uses different techniques to express themselves whether it be modern or postmodern.
Postmodern art use a lot of different techniques to express themselves and manipulate the audience in an entirely
different way like how Kusama had expressed herself in a different way than artists have previously done before.
Postmodernism started after WWII and used a happier and sometimes an ironic tone in their creations. Modernism
started in the 20th century and were sometimes difficult to understand the pieces of art and writing. It is the departure
of traditional arts and a movement in the arts to create new styles and techniques. The new form of art often causes
conflict and sorts of negative reaction to those viewing because of its new art form that questions many people. The
new form of art are subjective and creates different reactions that often tends to question what art really is in general.
Both modernism and postmodernism uses many of the similar authorial techniques but uses different tones in the
writings. Many of the authorial techniques they use are imagism, fragmentation, motifs, mutations, and many other
techniques to create an effect.
Although modernism uses similar techniques as postmodernism, modernism tends

Modernism in general can broadly be described as the "deviation from the ancient and classic manner". (Johnson, J.,

As post–modernism was a direct reaction to modernism, the two along with their respective theorists often criticize
each other and often justify their views in various debates and discourses.
"Habermas and the Unfinished Project of Modernity" is a collection of essays, which show us the discourse between
modernism and Post–modernism. Jürgen Habermas is a German social theorist who is also a strong defender of
modernity. He vigorously counteracts various criticisms made by post–modernist theorists on modernism. Many
intellectuals in the modern day have become skeptical about the emancipatory potential of modernity but Habermas
still believes and continues to insist on the idealistic utopian potential of modernity as the "child of enlightenment". As
modernism take has influences from democracy and reason, Habermas sees it as an unfinished project. By this
Habermas is trying to state that there is still so much to be done in the domain of modernism before contemplating a
move to the post–modern world.
Marx influenced Habermas as he had an association with the Frankfurt School of social thought, but nonetheless
believed that Marx's views needed to be thoroughly changed in order to make them genuinely contemporary and
modern. Considering this, Habermas came up with two important theories namely The Theory of Communication, and
The Theory of Rationalization of System and Life–world. In his theory of communication, Habermas assigns himself

Essay On Postmodernism
The concept of postmodernism is complex in that it does not share a common stream of thoughts but rather plays
individual idea of post modernism into different parts of fields. According to A Reader's Guide to Contemporary
Literary Theory by Raman Selden, "some see it as simply the continuation and development of modernist ideas, while
others have seen in postmodern art a radical break with classical modernism." Depending on which field it is being
applied on, postmodernism shows unalike features of trends. In architecture, literature, art, film, and more,
postmodernism has shown distinct and unique identity. In literature, there is no clear beginning and endings as did in
modernistic literature. The meaning of the literature is not to be found and meaningless in that postmodernism bases
its root on ontological uncertainty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In postmodernism, there may or may not be a moral which may change depending on the context of both the reader
and writer. In architecture, double–coding, combination of the traditional style and contemporary context was brought
to light. Piazza d'Italia in New Orleans, Die Neue Staatsgalerie in Stuttgart are examples of this. In art the destruction
of the distinction between commercial culture and the elite culture was emphasized. The mass crowd were made to
more easily access the works of art which the modernists considered exclusive to the elite. Postmodernism has
rejected traditional values and ideas in its own way in various fields, so the definition of postmodernism cannot be
reduced down into one line. Since the rise of postmodernism was in objection to the boundaries and limits of the
tradition, it may be that postmodernism cannot be cleared down into a single

Differences Between Modernism And Postmodernism
There are a lot of differences between modernism and postmodernism. The first is that modernism began in the late
19th century and lasted until the 20th century, specifically from the year 1890s to 1945. According to Oak (2008), "...
modernism and postmodernism highlights the difference in the approaches towards life." A good example would be,
during the modernist era rational and logical thinking was encouraged as well as being objective and postmodernism
does not and is subjective.
My chosen major is fashion designing. The purpose of fashion to me is an artistic way of self–expression, it is not
only shown through clothing, but a large variety of things like one's hair, personality and even plastic surgery! It is
because, self–expression is more than just what you wear but a way to show your "personality" through fashion.
Jameson (1998, 1) stated, "The concept of postmodernism is not widely accepted or even understood today." It is not
accepted especially for the fashion industry and there are people who still do not accept fashion as a form of art in the
postmodernism era but also during the modernist era, Paul Poiret stated "Am I a fool when I dream of putting art into
my dresses, a fool when I say dressmaking is an art? ... It seems to be that we practice the same craft, and that they are
my fellow workers." There are many different styles in fashion from all around the world that carries different

Postmodernism And Adolescence : The Outsiders
Postmodernism refuses to be pinned down and defined by a set of definitive characteristics or parameters. Its fluid
definition begs to be poked and prodded, unwilling to offer a solid answer of what constitutes a Postmodern text.
Similarly, the construct of adolescent identity ebbs and flows, now influenced by the advent of social media and its
new genre of storytelling. Postmodernism and adolescence together form an interesting perspective that has been
catalyzed by Young Adult Literature. The disregard for Young Adult Literature as a substantive genre worthy of
critical study mirrors the cultural disregard for adolescence as a valid human experience, a tension that can be
alleviated by a Postmodern reading of YA texts.
Postmodern themes have been creeping into Young Adult Literature for decades, testing the water to see if this genre
could host its disruptive behaviors and outlandish ideas. S.E. Hinton's 1967 novel, The Outsiders, plays with tenets of
Postmodern fiction but does not fully submerse itself in the chaos of the theory. Hinton's book toes the line between a
traditional linear text and that of a full–on Postmodern novel, such as W.D. Myers's turn of the century publication
Monster. Evidenced by scholarly studies of the novel's tropes and themes, Monster embodies YAL's embrace of
Postmodernism and fits snugly within the generally agreed upon characteristics of the theory both in form and content.

fragmentation of communication, however this is where the appeal to the consumers lies. Barthes wrote that "the birth
of the reader must be at the cost of the death of the author" (1967). The idea of postmodernism in advertising is to
empower the consumer, allowing them to determine the adverts meaning, the advertisements shown above embody
this view of postmodernism. XX believes that when the power contain in communicative interaction is harnessed

Postmodernism And Modernism
Intro:
"I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind."
Meaningless is what our postmodern world has become. As a consequence of excessive political correctness and the
removal of certainty and discernment, postmodernism has caused the deterioration of the western world and its values.
The absolutes of pre–modernism and the traditional logic of modernism are tossed aside for postmodernism's relative
truth and feelings based logic.
Paragraph one, reason one:
"You do you" says postmodernist. "There is no absolute truth, truth is relative or subjective and is different for
everyone. " Postmodernism seeks to remove all absolutes so that the only absolute that there is: that there are no
absolutes. There is no definition of postmodernism as any set definition of it, would be an absolute. When there is no
certainty, no absolute truth, why do we continue? Why do we continue to live and hold onto any ideas or morality? If
truth is subjective we have no meaning and no purpose. You may believe your meaning is to have as much fun as you
can, make millions of dollars or to have many friends. So what? Does that make you fulfilled and why do you need to
be fulfilled? There must be absolute truth for without it, "enjoyment" in life, is meaningless. Through the pre–
modernism era, the western world and our laws were formed and built upon the absolute truth of the christian God.

Harrison Bergeron: Postmodernism
Postmodernism exploded away from the confidence and tradition of modernist writing, and began to experiment with
a new social atmosphere. Rather than assigning one reality to the world, postmodernists practiced pluralism by
exploring the multiple truths present in any situation. Rich with paranoia and uncertainty , postmodernism
experimented with writing in fragmented, dark, and even absurd themes. This break away from traditional writing into
a more unreliable, pluralist voice can be seen strongly in Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron," as well as Joyce Carol
Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" Also, the fragmented and self–questing writing of the
postmodernists can be observed in Langston Hughes's poem, "Harlem." The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Postmodernist writing was sometimes fragmented, and often the narrator of the work was not a confident or
trustworthy source. This style of writing is utilized in "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" Oates's short
story almost feels as though it is written through a haze, as Connie's view is influenced by her emotions. The reader
cannot be sure what is actually going on in the story because of Connie's shock and fear, as well as the narration that
includes unclear phrases such as "so much land that Connie had never seen before and did not recognize except to
know that she was going to it" (Oates 11). This style of narration was a rebellious response to the confidence of the
modernist voice, and quintessential element of postmodernism. The whole short story is in fragmented pieces, with
gaps in the narrative. The reader does not know what happened between Connie and Eddie when she was out with her
friends (234), although some sort of significant event is alluded to. However, the confusion of the storytelling is vital
to the message of Oates's work. The postmodernist writing makes a statement about Connie's confusion, denial, and

Abstract
This essay offers a postmodernist reading of the popular television program The Simpsons, with special regard to the
postmodern theories of intertexuality, hyperreality, and metanarratives. Before delving into The Simpsons, some major
theoretical aspects of postmodernism in aesthetic production are outlined. Three of the most prominent theorists of
postmodernism – Lyotard, Baudrillard and Jameson – are introduced, as well as their theories which will be brought
into consideration in the following chapters. The objective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Hal Foster (1983: ix), postmodernism aims to deconstruct or rewrite modernism in order to open its
closed systems. Although both movements draw out techniques that essentially challenge tradition, the sentiment and
motivation behind the employment of these techniques differ in important ways. Fragmentation is an example of a
feature which characterizes both modernism and postmodernism, but literary critics such as Peter Barry argue that the
modernist employs fragmentation with a tone of lamentation and nostalgia
for an earlier, more intact age, while the postmodernist employs it with a tone of exhilaration and liberation (Barry,
2002: 84). Postmodernists also draw a distinction between modernism's and postmodernism's perception of the
relationship between "high" art and "low" art. Whereas the modernist would generally eschew the mixing of high and
low art, in the postmodern realm it is not infrequent that these elements are conflated in one expression.
Postmodernism stands in strong opposition to the kind of aesthetic elitism that postmodernists regard as inherent to
modernist aesthetics. Postmodernists regard popular arts as no less crucial to our culture than the more classic arts.
This is often perceived as a provocative view and has instigated many of postmodernism's more austere criticisms.
Although postmodernism is a notoriously difficult term to generalize, there are

Examples Of Postmodernism In Grendel
One era I observed throughout chapter 6 of Grendel is Postmodernism. Postmodernism is the recent era today where a
man's mind is subjectively hesitant or abolish the idea of mortality. When it refers to chaos or violence, it is a
celebrated reality where people accepted the suspicion and criticism of personal experiences about life. One example
of Gardner's use of postmodernism is when Grendel interacted with the humans continuously in this chapter, as their
adversary, in order to understand the purpose of humans. He went to their meadhall and took a man in his hands.
Grendel took the audacity to "bite his head off, crunching through the helmet and skill with his teeth. Cautiously, he
held the jerking, blood–slippery body with his two hands. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This quote exemplifies postmodernism as Grendel celebrating his success with the accomplishment he has done
towards the humans. With the knowledge he gain from personal experience with humans and his rational facts from
the dragon. Grendel comprehend that he was really the monster he claimed to be: "Grendel, Destroyer of Meadhalls,
and Wrecker of Kings" (Gardner, p.80). After his recent attack on the Danes, Grendel has no absolute idea of morality;
evidently, Grendel had seen what the humans did when they attack their enemies, killing them for their gold. In
essence, humans have no sense of morality, determining the skepticism of their deeds being justified or unforgivable.
Another example of Gardner's use of postmodernism is when Grendel met the hero name Unferth. Grendel spoke,
"There are compensations no doubt: the pleasant feeling of vast superiority, the easy success with women, and the joy
of self–knowledge, that's a great compensation. The easy and absolute certainty that whatever the danger, however
terrible the odds, you'll stand firm, behave with the dignity of hero, even to the grave" (Gardner,

The major themes of postmodernism :
Modern issues were always under specific topics such as truth and reality, reason and experience, liberty and equality,

Modernism And Postmodernism
Societal change is an unstoppable force, followed by an inevitable outcome. This phenomenon is yearned by some, yet
dreaded by others. Regardless of human opposition, nature inexorably takes its course, gradually transitioning from
one seemingly immutable concept to the next. These shifts can range anywhere from the subversion and replacement
of established cultural norms with fresh new ideals, to the inescapable advancement and refinement of technology.
Over time, a society's constituents begin to recognize certain motifs, which emerge in an epoch's progeny, ensuing
from the evolution of human thought and attitude. As a result, the people have imbued these time periods with names
that best encapsulate their meaning and significance. In this research paper, I will delve into the fundamentally unique
and directly opposed worlds of Modernism and Postmodernism, two time periods which lie beside each other and yet
share almost no common ground. Modernism is based on rational thinking, logic, and the scientific process, aimed at
creating a clear and rational view of the world while advocating the belief that there is much to learn from the past that
could be beneficial to the present. Postmodernism, on the other hand, advocates the belief that there is no universal
truth. It questions the rationality of Modernism and its ideologies, believing that there is no connection between the
past and the present, a complete opposite view as compared to Modernism. Through the

Modernism And Postmodernism
Modernism began at the end of the civil war and ended (at least on an intellectual level) when the USA dropped the
first atomic bomb. Modernism, whether it has to do with visual art, music or literature, gets its meaning from the idea
that truth derives from effort. If one looks at the Empire State Building, a modernist building, one can see that it starts
about a block wide at its base and tapers to a spire at the very top. This spire is the culmination of tremendous effort, it
is truth. Once humans realized that everything we had worked towards can be wiped out in an instant, something
snapped and some began to think "what's the point?". That idea culminated with "Well, why even work hard for truth?
Truth should be what is immediately evident." That was the beginning of the Postmodernist movement.
Postmodernism rejects the idea that any text or product or media is inherently more valuable than any other. Culture is
a snake eating its own tail. Everything old is new again. Everything deserves to be viewed as art. Everything deserves
an audience to consume it. With Modernism, you only get to truth, enlightenment and value through work. With
Postmodernism, you don't have to do that at all. Everything is beautiful how it is. But if everything's beautiful,
nothing's beautiful. And therein lies the snake eating its own tail. Postmodernism inevitably goes around in circles, but
that does not have to be a bad thing.
Postmodernism in the realm of visual art was a direct rebellion

1. Defining (Post)Modernism and McHale's Theory of Dominants
The distinction between modernism and postmodernism has never been a clear–cut dichotomy, and it probably never
will be, and thus can best be interpreted as a continuum (Childs 2008: Malpas 2005). For brevity's sake, I will not (and
cannot) fully explore the complex intellectual debates that function as the foundations of modernism and
postmodernism, as it is not this paper's goal to fully explore the nuanced difference between modernism and
postmodernism, but instead I will provide the basic concepts and features of each period, since these two genres are
crux to understand McHale's theory of dominants, but also to understand modernist and postmodernist fiction (cf.
Herman 1991 for a more in–depth analysis of modernism versus postmodernism). The following paragraphs will

The Pros And Cons Of Postmodernism
Postmodernism is a loose–umbrella term that is used to describe a myriad of ideologies which originated after the
modern era. It is that complex whole of perspectives which reject the core principles of modern( and enlightenment)
thought. It stretches its ideological framework into various fields of knowledge which include–but are not limited to–
Science, Economics, Politics, and Philosophy. The central claim of Postmodernism is that there is no one over–raiding
metanarrative. In other words, there is no such thing as an absolute truth, nor is there such a thing as objectivity. Thus,
reality becomes a matrix of perception which changes based on the interpretation upon which it was forged. Hence,

Postmodernists argue that because modern science was developed by a group of people which were ensconced in a
European culture, they carried their subjective biases and prejudices into the scientific inquiry. By this logic, science
does not seem like an objective method through which to investigate the world, but rather an enterprise that serve to
adhere to a particular socio–political agenda. To elaborate, they believe that science, in its contemporary state, does
not produce objective facts, but rather it offers a limited manner through which to cultivate the world. Specifically, a
white–masculine–elite view of the world. This means that new types of epistemologies–such as the feminist
epistemology–should be introduced to paint the full picture of reality. Thus, science seems to offer a one–dimensional
narrative that needs the perspectives of so–called marginalized, oppressed groups to be complete. This line of
reasoning is intrinsically flawed for a multitude of reasons. First

Postmodernism In Film
"Life has no meaning a priori... It is up to you to give it a meaning, and value is nothing but the meaning that you
choose"(Jean–Paul Satre). As is began in the mid to late 20th century, Postmodernism has become a literary movement
that has greatly influenced writers, poets, music, film, culture, art, etc. While modernist theory is rational and
scientific in reasoning, Postmodernism departs away from that focusing primarily on an innovative way of thought
that is avant–garde and subjective. Films such as Fight Club and stranger than fiction are clear examples of
postmodernism as they both hold postmodernist characteristics such as Paranoia, breaking of the fourth wall, and
black comedy.

(Stranger Than Fiction). Not only does Herald hear a strange voice in his mind, however along with that the voice tell
him he is going to die. This causes Herald to panic even more because he believes his life is in danger. He does not
know what the voice he hears is and what is yet to come, thus scaring him and leaving him paranoid.
Breaking the fourth wall is a postmodernist term used when the character directly interacts with the audience in some
way. The term "breaking the fourth wall" is used to display the breaking of the barrier between the movie and the
audience. It is the reality within a character where they understand that they in fact are a character in the movie. Fight
Club displays this characteristic of postmodernism as the whole film is narrated by the protagonist, Edward Norton. In
one scene where Edward introduces his friend Tyler Derby, "Let me tell you a little bit about Tyler Derby..."(Fight
Club), he draws his attention to the screen while speaking directly to the audience. Also in the same scene, both
Edward and Tyler interact with the audience together. When explaining what Tyler does as a part time job, Edward
says, "If you look for it, you can see these little dots coming in at the upper right corner of the screen"(Fight Club).

Postmodernism and the Future of Literature
During the 19th and early 20th, Western world experienced numerous historical events and influential changes,
including the Word Wars and technological revolutions. These phenomenons affected the society at large, including in
the aspect of art and literature. Literary historians often classified literature from late 19th century until the end of
World War II as modernism and literature after World War II as postmodernism. Although there are no explicit
definitions, common traits can often be found that distinguished these two categories. In this paper, I will be

Postmodernism artists enjoyed experimenting on literary techniques, such as metanarrative and lack of character
developments, which received mixed response in literature world.
One of the most notable works in postmodernism era is Calvino's If On A Winter's Night A Traveler. Just like many
postmodern works, If On A Winter's Night A Traveler is a metafiction, using second person narrative form to further
emphasis its self–consciousness. Calvino indicated his intention by starting his book with the sentence "You are about
to begin reading Italo Calvino's If On A Winter's Night Traveler" (1), addressing the main character of the book as
"You" or "the Reader". In addition, the book is high fragmented, another trait commonly found in postmodernism
works. The book is divided into 22 parts, each in the form of double chapters, alternating between numbered chapters
telling story of the character "You", and unnumbered chapters containing the first chapter of 10 separate stories. With
the concept of beginning a whole new story on each unnumbered chapters, Calvino was able to explore a wide range
of genres, spanning from mystery to romance, in a single book. The discontinuity of the chapters result in absence of
clear image of characters in each stories. Even the main story from the numbered chapters, Calvino used the advantage
of having "You" as the main

Modernism is a term to describe the movement of new art, and was most active between the late 19th to the early 20th

This particular work "Eclipse of the Sun" (1926) by Grosz, is a particular example of this. As Modernists hoped for a
unanimous view, to project ones ideas across to a world and make them self–realise the world around them. This
painting tries to get across Grosz's own self–realisation as it represents how he has delved deep into his own beliefs
and understandings and how he has portrayed them in a highly abstract yet explanatory way.
Grosz illustrates the modernist theory in many ways. For instance, the painting is mainly a criticism of Weimar
Germany, and the actions and dealings of the corrupt President of the Reich at the time, Paul Von Hindenburg, who is
shown in the painting. He paints literal 'mindless' bodies to represent the Bureaucrats, or, the people with official
positions within the government. The donkey, a money fed German citizen, blinded by their own ignorance, having
being led out on a plank that would eventually lead to their fall, and death. The bottom right hand corner, the face of a
child being locked away, representing youth, the harm to the future generations and the prevention of a younger voice
being heard. And finally to explain the name of the painting, he paints a dollar covered moon, eclipsing the sun, to
show the greed and the power money has in overtaking life, or essentially what creates life.

Essay on Metamorphosis and Postmodernism
The twentieth century has been marked as a time of great suffering and advancement in human history. One product of
this dynamic time is the theory of postmodernism. According to Thomas McEvilley, postmodernism happened in
America after people started to realize that history was cruel and that people were not really progressing much. This
directly discredited the pre–existing theory of modernism which took its ideology from the three pillars: progress,
hierarchy of cultures, universals. McEvilley believes that the modernist ideals are just a way of creating a false reality,
a world where no one is suffering and everything is beautiful. In his novel The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka uses the
dramatic transformation of his character, Gregor, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet, after Gregor goes through the transformation the traditional family structure is restored to some extent. The father
becomes robust and asserts himself as the patriarch of the family. Some would argue that this restoration of hierarchy
makes The Metamorphosis modernist and to some extent this assumption is correct. However, the restoration of the
family structure comes at the price that Gregor is no longer considered part of the family. This suggests that Kafka was
in fact trying to reveal the fragility of the family. Gregor began as the sole provider for the family, yet they turned their
backs on him after his transformation, showing how selfish the family really was. Kafka effectively makes the reader
empathize with Gregor, even in his hideous state, to ironically make the rest of the Samsa family look like the vermin
at the end of the book.
The authority of the parents is also easily undermined by Grete, which again portrays the hierarchy of the family to be
completely flipped. Grete assumes power over her parents by doing the work that the mother or father should be
doing. The mother is shown as a weak force whose sole ability of manipulation is the loosening of her blouse in front
of the father. In contrast, the father is depicted as a man in constant fear of Gregor, which he tries to mask by an
authoritative power over the family. However, many would argue that the story is not a mockery of the second pillar of
modernism. At the

Modernism And Postmodernism
Born out of conflict, both modernism and postmodernism were movements that explored the pieces that two global
wars had left behind. Modernism focused heavily on the rise of nationalism and capitalism as well as the exploration
of individual identity. Some of the more notable literary figures to arise from this period were Virginia Woolf, T.S.
Eliot, and Wallace Stevens. Postmodernism, on the other hand, emphasized the rejection of metanarratives, healthy
skepticism of universalisms, and the creation of fictional worlds. The influential literary titans from this era include
the likes of Kurt Vonnegut, Jorge Luis Borges, and Vladimir Nabokov.
During the modernist era, the rise of nationalism and global expansion exploded across the globe. Nationalist ideals
began to take hold across Europe and tensions increased as each country attempt to showcase its own believed
superiority. Citizens of each nation were identifying themselves as holding common beliefs and ideals supposedly
inherent to their country of origin. Rupert Brooke's poem The Soldier is an intriguing example of nationalism and
identity from this time period. The poem's narrator is a soldier of British descent who speaks of his possible death and
his arrival in "English heaven". His intense love and pride for his country cannot only be seen in the fact that his
depiction of heaven is simply another version of England, but also in the first two couplets. He states, "If I should die,

The Impact Of Postmodernism
Postmodernism was a reaction against the modernism philosophical values and assumptions. Although many agree
that there is a thin line between modernism and postmodernism, postmodernism is not modernism. In modernism,
scientific theories were used to determine what is true. However, postmodernism allows individuals to question the
theories and not take them as facts (Duignan, 2014). While modernism emphasized on objectivism, postmodernism
allows extensive subjectivism in all aspects of life.
The main features of a postmodernist are that he or she is overly subjective, sensitive towards the role of ideology in
assertion and maintenance of political and economic power. On the other hand, a modernist for example, there exists
objective natural reality which is independent of human beings, their practices and relationships (Duignan, 2014).

In reaction, it furthered inclusion, freedom, and cooperation in the society. Although it lacks clear doctrine, the
distinction noticeable between the 1860s to 1950s and 1950s to date is clear evidence that there was and still there is
such movement as postmodernism. Postmodernists qualify their theoretical position as advocating for inclusivity and
democracy in the society because of their keenness to recognize unjust enlightenment and challenging it with equally
valid perspectives.

Postmodernism : A Consensus On Postmodernism
Of Precise Ambiguity
A Consensus on Postmodernism
C. Jencks, H. Klotz & W. Curtis
Postmodernism is a universal movement, present in every art and discipline. In architecture, postmodernism is precise
as well as ambiguous thereby in need of an explorative pursuit for a consensus of what is meant by the movement in
this perspective – between the works of Charles Jencks, a primary theorist of this architectural turn; Heinrich Klotz, a
leading architectural critic; and William Curtis, an architectural historian. The progression of this paper is highly
influenced with Jencks' studies as his works are often times referenced as well by both Klotz and Curtis in their
individual interpretations and further accompanied with either supporting statements or contradictions. Charles Jencks
suggests the concept of double coding in several aspects. Primarily, that architects become public–oriented rather than
peer–oriented; to design structures that appeal to both these constituencies and beyond the architectural world. The
concept of double coding prompted a new approach to architecture to accommodate these distinct needs – an approach
that was a form of eclecticism of both old and new styles that now dominate the present world. On his book on
Modern Architecture, Curtis writes that modern architecture was faulted for it's "supposed lack of 'recognizable
imagery'" towards the end of the 1970s. This statement supports the idea of Jencks' double coding where architects
must now make

Postmodernism And Modernism In Society
The definition of Compassion is "when an individual has a sympathetic response to the misfortunate of others".
Compassion forms most of Non–profit organizations as their main aim is to improve the situation at hand. A good
example of this would be the feeding kitchens in around Cape Town city center whereby the people from the
community provide and serve meals to the needy. The word Generosity is when someone performs some sort of an act
of kindness that is beneficial to others. A form of this would be from the community as they choose to donate or
volunteer towards or for the NPO.
There are many things that postmodernism can relate to, such as cultural, political and social characteristics. In this
case of postmodernism we have a look at the social outlook of it. Postmodernism refers to the contemporary
characteristics of society; it is a theoretical analysis of two different views this being classical or modernist.
Postmodernism relates not only to a period in time but also to new ideas resulting from "modernism". The concept of
postmodernism came about in the mid to late 20th century. Within a postmodern society there are more anti–
ideological ideas, for instance the feminist, racial equality and gay rights movements, all of which is in favor of the
Democratic Party.

Postmodernism : Modernism And Postmodernism
Modernism and Postmodernism To begin with, to determine the meaning of postmodernism is possible only through
the relationship with modernism. Modernism in modern science is understood as a kind of cultural consciousness,
which is implemented in the artistic practice of symbolism, expressionism and acmeism. In the socio–historical
context, it means the period of modernism in the development of culture from the late nineteenth to mid–twentieth
century, that is, from Impressionism to a new novel and the theatre of the absurd. Modernism as a world based on the
principles of urbanism (the cult of the city), technologism (the cult of the industry), primitivism (the cult of the
underdeveloped role model), and others. Postmodernism simultaneously grows and is repelled by the picture of the
world, established in modernism. Overcoming modernist tendencies, postmodern cult of the city replaces cosmism,
values of industrial society – environmentalism, denying mindless nature and asserting the need for harmonious
relations between society and nature. Thus, the ideological concept of postmodernism includes the principles of

Postmodernism And Language

  • 1. Postmodernism And Language Postmodernism started in the 20th century and it involved art, architecture, and literature. Postmodern philosophers believe that the world cannot be understood objectively nor there is an absolute truth. Moreover, they think that everyone perceives the world in his own way, there is no common grand between people in understanding the world or perceiving it. While Modern philosophers think the opposite: "We are able to comprehend reality because categories exist within our minds that actively generate perception. These categories, Kant assumed, are universally the same in all people." (postmodernpreaching.net). Postmodern philosophers encourage questioning, what seems to be obvious. This is the right thing to do. It is wrong to immediately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Can language objectively describe truth? Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) believes that language cannot objectively describe truth because each language will add different meanings to the same text. "All language is socially conditioned. We understand the world solely in terms of our language games – that is, our linguistic, social constructs." (postmodernpreaching.net). According to science, things have changed since newton time. Back then people believed in rationality and absolutes. But now in the 20th century with the development of science, came to light the relativity theory. The relativity theory threw away the absolutes. "Russell expressed the view that once people became used to the idea of relativity, it would forever change their way of thinking. They would abandon a belief in absolutes and begin to regard all concepts as relative" (postmodernpreaching.net). "The correspondence theory of truth caused people to believe that scientific truth equals absolute truth. Postmodernism corrects this by denying the equivalency between scientific truth and absolute truth. All scientific conclusions are now understood to be tentative simply because no one has ever made the infinite number of observations required to learn if there are any exceptions."(postmodernpreaching.net). • 3. Modernism And Postmodernism In the same manner in which one looks to structuralism to identify the main ideas of post structuralism, one must look to modernism to understand postmodernism. Modernism in literature reflected the same rejection of fundamental elements as musical, visual art, and architectural styles. More specifically, "traditional realism" in literature was abandoned" in favour of experimental forms of various kinds." (Barry 79) Modernism enjoyed its highest point of popularity between 1910–1930, especially reflected in the writings of English speaking writers such as T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf; and in the writings of German and/or French speaking writers like Marcel Proust or Franz Kafka. These writers sought to place a new emphasis on impressionism; deviate from traditional prose and poetry style by using fragmented writing styles; and increase subjectivity of character and narrator, no doubt to distinguish themselves from the overtly moral liberal humanist model. In general, this represented a shift in literature "dedicated to experimentation and innovation." (Barry 79) What then, was postmodernism? Contrary to the potentially misleading misnomer, postmodernism, rather than a continuation of modernist practice, represents more of a reaction it. It is important to recognize that there exists "two opposed moods or attitudes" (Barry 80) between modernism and postmodernism. As Barry states, "J. A. • 5. Analysis Of ' The Era Of Postmodernism ' Throughout the history of man, human beings impose form and order on all aspects of life in order to reassure themselves there is a grand design behind life's seeming uncertainty. Evidence of this desire are social constructions such as religion and time. However, the strong need to understand the word through concrete systems is also seen in smaller details of daily life, such as fiction novels. The average person enjoys realistic fiction, or fiction that mirrors what one perceives as the "the human experience." One method that fiction uses to enforce this desired reality is the use of a single overarching storyline, or metanarrative. The era of Postmodernism upended this notion that a novel should only have one grand metanarrative, and this upending is based in a reality closer to one's lifespan where experiences are not singular or linear, but an amalgam of events and memories which overlap, shift priorities, and transcend strict chronological time. Two Postmodern novels that challenge the concept of a single metanarrative by including various micronarratives, employed to confuse what story takes precedence over the other, are Vladimir Nabokov's Pale Fire and Italo Calvino's If On a Winter's Night a Traveler. Nabokov employs the concept of intertextual conversation between different sections of the book in Pale Fire while Calvino makes use of the reader's self–awareness of their role as an active participant in the reading of If On a Winter's Night a Traveler to ... • 7. An Overview of Postmodernism Essay The political climate at the beginning of the 1940's and the changes taking place all around the world drastically influenced the face of contemporary society. The invasion of Poland by Germany on 1st of September 1939 was the first stone thrown in the face of freedom of expression and liberty out of the many that followed for the next decades. The dawn of the Second World War was one of the premises that forced many European artists, pioneers par excellence in their field, through their French or German inherited status, to immigrate across the ocean. Due to the exile, the art centre also moved overseas, from Paris to New York, offering a new opportunity for American art to be the initiator in what was generally accepted as the new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This description is trying to clearly position postmodernism in a specific time frame and outline its main characteristics. However, when consulting the Macmillan Dictionary (2010) the description offered is significantly less conclusive: "ideas, attitudes, or styles of art, literature, or thinking that have developed after modernism, often as a reaction against " The main accent is set on the chronological aspect of postmodernism and its logical and historical flow offering the reader not enough information to identify a clear period or any particular feature. Only by comparing the two definitions, a very small part of the available explanations on the subject, and at the same time reading them together one can identify one of the main components of the movement: diversity in all its aspects. The difference in these definitions is not just a simple coincidence and should be taken as a figure of speech for the description of the entire period. During this time critics and writers, artists and architects etc. have tried to find a proper explanation for the changes they were being part of, concretised in what became known as Postmodernism. During the 1960s 'attacks' started appearing against the elitism shown by modernism. One of the first voices pointing at modernism's faults was the poet Karl Shapiro , who in 1959 in an article for The Times Book ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Postmodernism : Modernism And Postmodernism Modernism and Postmodernism are both two important eras in design. Postmodernism takes a lot of concepts from the modernism era. Both modernism and post modernism focus on Style, Social analysis, Cultural Context, Philosophy, Politics, Human experience, Machine aesthetics, and the constant transformation of the "New". An interesting fact of the Modernism and Postmodernism is the use of the psychology and philosophy themes 1. Subjectivity 2.History 3. Culture and 4. Theoretically divers aesthetics and ideologies. What differentiates the two from each other is the postmodernism is more politically resistant, deconstructive, absent, uses the Signifier, Anarchy, and Dadaist. • 11. Postmodernism In The Things They Carried Postmodernism is a style of writing which is still used often today. It is a response to modernism because postmodernism questions the norm. Essentially, postmodernism use is being used because everything else has been taken, so by blending in certain creations together, you can make something new. In postmodernism, authors like Tim O'Brien, who wrote The Things They Carried and A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers, both authors are telling the reader a story in the first person with stream of conscious, just like a modernist writer would do. However, the two authors, similarly, are unreliable at points in the books because they both change the meaning of their own true stories and admit to tricking the reader multiple ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Dave is describing his mother's stomach he says, "I don't ask questions. Before, when I said that I asked questions, I lied" (12). Although this is a small detail in the book, Eggers feels as if he has to lie to convince the reader that this is a true story. By saying that he lied at the end, it is a postmodernist idea because you are not supposed to say whether you lied or not in your story. By telling the reader that he doesn't ask questions, his trust level drops in the mind of the readers. Another spot in the memoir in which Eggers stretches the truth is when he is talking about his father. Although Eggers father died before his mother did, he switches up the chronological order by blending in the two dying parents together. After Dave, Beth, Toph, and the mom are about to go to the hospital, Eggers dimensions the death of his father by saying, "You should have seen my father's service" (33). From talking about his dying mother to his dead father, Eggers blends the two moments together because that is the way he felt about them as he was writing this memoir. Although he can tell the story as he would like to, by moving the story into different parts, it can become confusing for the reader and cause some belief to decrease in Eggers story on how everything ... • 13. Postmodernism On The Movie Zombieland While watching a movie, we often refer to the movie's genre's category when we browse the cinema titles. We pick and choose according to our likings, purchase a ticket and enjoy the movie. Simple. However, what comes to mind in this industry and the art of film making is the evolution of the existing film genres in today's wide market of movies. The movie genres that we have seen over the years have constantly altered itself and improved – from the horror genre for example – Nosferatu (Murnau.F.W , 1922) to Insidious: Chapter 3 (Whannel. L, 2015) and then a blend of genres as seen in Zombieland (Fleischer. R, 2009). As Hayward. S (2006, p. 185) puts it "Clearly, genres are not static, they evolve with the times, even disappear." When analysing a genre, Bordwell and Thompson (2009, p. 331) states that a genre consists of conventions which filmmakers use it to determine the elements to work with, while viewers use it as an indication of what to expect from the film they are watching. When we watch a movie, our minds are constantly finding significant elements to latch on and to relate, when our minds have mapped out a certain recognisable pattern in the film, we can finally categorise the genre of film that we are watching and thus decide whether to agree with the stated genre or otherwise. Out of the years of genre theory, theoreticians have acknowledged the significance of semantics and syntax but only as separate entities. In their discourse, the two approaches state that the semantic approach can be used for a wide number of films but lacks in descriptive power while the syntactic is the vice versa. From "A Semantic /Syntactic Approach To Film Genre" (Altman. R, 1984), Rick Altman proposes an approach of combining both semantic and syntactic approaches to analyse a film's genre. • 15. Postmodernism : Modernism And Postmodernism This paper outlines, argues and evaluates the key ideas used in debates about modernism and postmodernism. In order to understand and evaluate the key ideas the terms modernism and postmodernism had to be defined. I found much difficulty in finding a clear and concise definition of the two terms and so I researched and formed a train of thoughts into one definition. Modernism, beginning in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century within Europe and America, was a movement mainly pioneered by artists who focused on the separation of their craft from the status quo of the society during that period mainly by the use of experimentation with content, form and materials (Long & Wall, 2012). Many believe that the basic principles of modernism can be derived from the Idea of Progress, which emerged in the 18th century Age of Enlightenment with the idea that people themselves could develop and change their society. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernization_theory, 2014). The post modernism term was much harder to explain and so in addition to outlining and evaluating the key ideas of postmodernism I have also highlighted the works and examples of the theorist Jean Baudrillard and the artist Marcel Duchamp, among others, to further explain the term post modernism. This paper is separated into five subtopics where I go in–depth into each category so as to give a fair analysis and evaluation on both modernism and post modernism. • 17. Characteristics Of Postmodernism It is also known that postmodernism addresses many cultural issues that were not seen as issues before. Modernism is set in its roots within a patriarchal and racist culture dominated by white heterosexual men (Palmer, 2018). There are many things that have come with postmodernism, like many different types of equal rights and cultural identity. However, many of these have also come up in a post–postmodernism culture, which seems to follow the events of 9/11 in 2001. Postmodern Millennials The Millennial generation or Gen Y, has grown up with this postmodern idea along with many other factors. In a video I watched, Millennials in the Workforce, Simon Sinek talks about how millennials are self– interested and lazy, which are also characteristics associated with postmodernists. Millennials are a generation that really does not have a definite beginning, but some agree that this generation started in the mid–1980s and ends somewhere between late 1990s and early 2000s (Sinek, 2017). Sinek can break down four characteristics that contribute to a millennial's unhappiness: parenting, technology, impatience, and environment. As we look at parenting many millennials say that were subject to failed parenting strategies. They were told they were special all the time, they received participation medals. Many times, Millennials' parents would complain to the school board or teachers because their child did not earn an A in a class or was not input into honors classes even if they did ... • 19. Modernism Versus Postmodernism Modernism vs. Postmodernism Post–modernism follows and shares many of the same ideas as modernism. Though, at the same time, they differ in many ways. These distinctions can be seen in the two works of literature, "Death of a Salesman" by Arthur Miller and "Glengarry Glen Ross" by David Mamet. "Death of a Salesman" represents the modernist literature. Modernism is a style of literature that came about after World War I in Europe. It emerged in the United States in the late 1920s. Modernism was the response to the commotion, which occurred during World War I. The narrator in the play is limited and omniscient; he or she observes the thoughts and actions of Willy, Biff, and other central characters in the story, a type of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the play, it is seen that money drives people to do crazy things and only leads to their downfall. Postmodernism proves to embrace the low culture, where the idea of elite, power, and money is not as important. Trying to make meaning becomes impossible and repressive and millions die in desire to create a great collective. Postmodernism is more accepting in regards to chaos. The idea of being okay in a world where there are no universal truths had become accepted. This can be seen in the play, because no characters are represented as true. They are living in a false world. This false world is made up of a false business with false leads and false people trying to sell them. • 21. Postmodernism In Post Modernism Post–Modernism is a revolutionary era that follows Modernism and developed in mid to late twentieth century. It takes a changed and developed approach across philosophy, art, criticism, and architecture and makes a departure from Modernism. The term Postmodernism is applied to an era that both follows modernity, and also acts as a host of movements that emerged during the era especially in art, music, and literature, marked by the tendencies against modernism. It is more like the 'rejection of conventional social norms', followed by the 'Counter–culture' movement. 'Counter–culture' movement spreads massively in Europe and North America during mid 20th century, which is a subculture whose norms of behavior and values substantially differ from those of dominant mainstream society and culture. Its 1960's to 1970"s development generated a unique brand of its own in the field of notable literature, including comics and cartoons. It explores the fraught relationship of gentleman and amateur naturalist Charles Smithson and Sarah Woodruff, the former governess and independent woman with whom he falls in love. • 23. Postmodernism And Its Influence On Modern Society Postmodernism is a complex term that has tried to be describes by many different theorist in many different ways. Some say that it is so hard to define because it is an idea that emerges across and variety of disciplines. In its most basic form Postmodernism can be describes at "departure from modernism and is characterized by the self–conscious use of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic styles and media, and a general distrust of theories" (Oxford Dictionary, 2010). So with this definition in mind we must look at modernism and the movement away from this to postmodernism. We will also look at the characteristic of postmodernism and how it is represented in the media culture. The phrase 'postmodernism' was used to depict a style in architecture in the early 1960's, this style used components from the past architectural styles and combined them to create buildings. This term was coined and used by cultural and political theorist to express contemporary Western and global society, two of theorists which will be discussed is Fredric Jameson and Linda Hitcheon who have apposing views on the theory. Fredric Jameson is an American literary critic and Marxist political theorist. Jameson argues that a shift in the economic society began in the late 1960's, and that the world is moving into a phase he calls "late capitalism." Jameson view is that there is a link between the economic changes that has lead to a postmodern style of living, however that it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The new form of art often causes conflict and sorts of negative reaction to those viewing because of its new art form that questions many people. The new form of art are subjective and creates different reactions that often tends to question what art really is in general. Jürgen Habermas is a German social theorist who is also a strong defender of modernity. He vigorously counteracts various criticisms made by post–modernist theorists on modernism. Many intellectuals in the modern day have become skeptical about the emancipatory potential of modernity but Habermas still believes and continues to insist on the idealistic utopian potential of modernity as the "child of enlightenment". As modernism take has influences from democracy and reason, Habermas sees it as an unfinished project. By this Habermas is trying to state that there is still so much to be done in the domain of modernism before contemplating a move to the post–modern world. Marx influenced Habermas as he had an association with the Frankfurt School of social thought, but nonetheless believed that Marx's views needed to be thoroughly changed in order to make them genuinely contemporary and modern. Essay On Postmodernism The concept of postmodernism is complex in that it does not share a common stream of thoughts but rather plays individual idea of post modernism into different parts of fields. According to A Reader's Guide to Contemporary Literary Theory by Raman Selden, "some see it as simply the continuation and development of modernist ideas, while others have seen in postmodern art a radical break with classical modernism." Depending on which field it is being applied on, postmodernism shows unalike features of trends. In architecture, literature, art, film, and more, postmodernism has shown distinct and unique identity. In literature, there is no clear beginning and endings as did in modernistic literature. • 33. Differences Between Modernism And Postmodernism There are a lot of differences between modernism and postmodernism. The first is that modernism began in the late 19th century and lasted until the 20th century, specifically from the year 1890s to 1945. According to Oak (2008), "... modernism and postmodernism highlights the difference in the approaches towards life." A good example would be, during the modernist era rational and logical thinking was encouraged as well as being objective and postmodernism does not and is subjective. My chosen major is fashion designing. The purpose of fashion to me is an artistic way of self–expression, it is not only shown through clothing, but a large variety of things like one's hair, personality and even plastic surgery! It is because, self–expression is more than just what you wear but a way to show your "personality" through fashion. Jameson (1998, 1) stated, "The concept of postmodernism is not widely accepted or even understood today." It is not accepted especially for the fashion industry and there are people who still do not accept fashion as a form of art in the postmodernism era but also during the modernist era, Paul Poiret stated "Am I a fool when I dream of putting art into my dresses, a fool when I say dressmaking is an art? ... • 35. Postmodernism And Adolescence : The Outsiders Postmodernism refuses to be pinned down and defined by a set of definitive characteristics or parameters. Its fluid definition begs to be poked and prodded, unwilling to offer a solid answer of what constitutes a Postmodern text. Similarly, the construct of adolescent identity ebbs and flows, now influenced by the advent of social media and its new genre of storytelling. Postmodernism and adolescence together form an interesting perspective that has been catalyzed by Young Adult Literature. The disregard for Young Adult Literature as a substantive genre worthy of critical study mirrors the cultural disregard for adolescence as a valid human experience, a tension that can be alleviated by a Postmodern reading of YA texts. Postmodern themes have been creeping into Young Adult Literature for decades, testing the water to see if this genre could host its disruptive behaviors and outlandish ideas. S.E. Hinton's 1967 novel, The Outsiders, plays with tenets of Postmodern fiction but does not fully submerse itself in the chaos of the theory. Hinton's book toes the line between a traditional linear text and that of a full–on Postmodern novel, such as W.D. Myers's turn of the century publication Monster. • 41. Postmodernism And Modernism Intro: "I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind." Meaningless is what our postmodern world has become. As a consequence of excessive political correctness and the removal of certainty and discernment, postmodernism has caused the deterioration of the western world and its values. The absolutes of pre–modernism and the traditional logic of modernism are tossed aside for postmodernism's relative truth and feelings based logic. Paragraph one, reason one: "You do you" says postmodernist. "There is no absolute truth, truth is relative or subjective and is different for everyone. " Postmodernism seeks to remove all absolutes so that the only absolute that there is: that there are no absolutes. There is no definition of postmodernism as any set definition of it, would be an absolute. When there is no certainty, no absolute truth, why do we continue? Why do we continue to live and hold onto any ideas or morality? If truth is subjective we have no meaning and no purpose. You may believe your meaning is to have as much fun as you can, make millions of dollars or to have many friends. So what? Does that make you fulfilled and why do you need to be fulfilled? There must be absolute truth for without it, "enjoyment" in life, is meaningless. Rather than assigning one reality to the world, postmodernists practiced pluralism by exploring the multiple truths present in any situation. Rich with paranoia and uncertainty , postmodernism experimented with writing in fragmented, dark, and even absurd themes. This break away from traditional writing into a more unreliable, pluralist voice can be seen strongly in Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron," as well as Joyce Carol Oates's "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" Although both movements draw out techniques that essentially challenge tradition, the sentiment and motivation behind the employment of these techniques differ in important ways. Fragmentation is an example of a feature which characterizes both modernism and postmodernism, but literary critics such as Peter Barry argue that the modernist employs fragmentation with a tone of lamentation and nostalgia for an earlier, more intact age, while the postmodernist employs it with a tone of exhilaration and liberation (Barry, 2002: 84). Postmodernists also draw a distinction between modernism's and postmodernism's perception of the relationship between "high" art and "low" art. Whereas the modernist would generally eschew the mixing of high and low art, in the postmodern realm it is not infrequent that these elements are conflated in one expression. Postmodernism stands in strong opposition to the kind of aesthetic elitism that postmodernists regard as inherent to modernist aesthetics. Postmodernists regard popular arts as no less crucial to our culture than the more classic arts. This is often perceived as a provocative view and has instigated many of postmodernism's more austere criticisms. Although postmodernism is a notoriously difficult term to generalize, there are ... Postmodernism is the recent era today where a man's mind is subjectively hesitant or abolish the idea of mortality. When it refers to chaos or violence, it is a celebrated reality where people accepted the suspicion and criticism of personal experiences about life. One example of Gardner's use of postmodernism is when Grendel interacted with the humans continuously in this chapter, as their adversary, in order to understand the purpose of humans. After his recent attack on the Danes, Grendel has no absolute idea of morality; evidently, Grendel had seen what the humans did when they attack their enemies, killing them for their gold. In essence, humans have no sense of morality, determining the skepticism of their deeds being justified or unforgivable. Another example of Gardner's use of postmodernism is when Grendel met the hero name Unferth. Grendel spoke, "There are compensations no doubt: the pleasant feeling of vast superiority, the easy success with women, and the joy of self–knowledge, that's a great compensation. The easy and absolute certainty that whatever the danger, however terrible the odds, you'll stand firm, behave with the dignity of hero, even to the grave" (Gardner, ... Regardless of human opposition, nature inexorably takes its course, gradually transitioning from one seemingly immutable concept to the next. These shifts can range anywhere from the subversion and replacement of established cultural norms with fresh new ideals, to the inescapable advancement and refinement of technology. Over time, a society's constituents begin to recognize certain motifs, which emerge in an epoch's progeny, ensuing from the evolution of human thought and attitude. As a result, the people have imbued these time periods with names that best encapsulate their meaning and significance. In this research paper, I will delve into the fundamentally unique and directly opposed worlds of Modernism and Postmodernism, two time periods which lie beside each other and yet share almost no common ground. Modernism is based on rational thinking, logic, and the scientific process, aimed at creating a clear and rational view of the world while advocating the belief that there is much to learn from the past that could be beneficial to the present. Postmodernism, on the other hand, advocates the belief that there is no universal truth. It questions the rationality of Modernism and its ideologies, believing that there is no connection between the past and the present, a complete opposite view as compared to Modernism. • 53. Modernism And Postmodernism Modernism began at the end of the civil war and ended (at least on an intellectual level) when the USA dropped the first atomic bomb. Modernism, whether it has to do with visual art, music or literature, gets its meaning from the idea that truth derives from effort. If one looks at the Empire State Building, a modernist building, one can see that it starts about a block wide at its base and tapers to a spire at the very top. This spire is the culmination of tremendous effort, it is truth. Once humans realized that everything we had worked towards can be wiped out in an instant, something snapped and some began to think "what's the point?". That idea culminated with "Well, why even work hard for truth? Truth should be what is immediately evident." That was the beginning of the Postmodernist movement. Postmodernism rejects the idea that any text or product or media is inherently more valuable than any other. Culture is a snake eating its own tail. Everything old is new again. Everything deserves to be viewed as art. Everything deserves an audience to consume it. With Modernism, you only get to truth, enlightenment and value through work. With Postmodernism, you don't have to do that at all. Everything is beautiful how it is. But if everything's beautiful, nothing's beautiful. And therein lies the snake eating its own tail. It is that complex whole of perspectives which reject the core principles of modern( and enlightenment) thought. The central claim of Postmodernism is that there is no one over–raiding metanarrative. In other words, there is no such thing as an absolute truth, nor is there such a thing as objectivity. As is began in the mid to late 20th century, Postmodernism has become a literary movement that has greatly influenced writers, poets, music, film, culture, art, etc. While modernist theory is rational and scientific in reasoning, Postmodernism departs away from that focusing primarily on an innovative way of thought that is avant–garde and subjective. Breaking the fourth wall is a postmodernist term used when the character directly interacts with the audience in some way. The term "breaking the fourth wall" is used to display the breaking of the barrier between the movie and the audience. It is the reality within a character where they understand that they in fact are a character in the movie. Fight Club displays this characteristic of postmodernism as the whole film is narrated by the protagonist, Edward Norton. In one scene where Edward introduces his friend Tyler Derby, "Let me tell you a little bit about Tyler Derby..."(Fight Club), he draws his attention to the screen while speaking directly to the audience. Also in the same scene, both Edward and Tyler interact with the audience together. When explaining what Tyler does as a part time job, Edward says, "If you look for it, you can see these little dots coming in at the upper right corner of the screen"(Fight Club). After he says this, an oval shape appears on the right upper corner of the screen. Tyler then replies with, "In the industry we call them cigarette ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Postmodernism And The Future Of Literature Postmodernism and the Future of Literature During the 19th and early 20th, Western world experienced numerous historical events and influential changes, including the Word Wars and technological revolutions. These phenomenons affected the society at large, including in the aspect of art and literature. Literary historians often classified literature from late 19th century until the end of World War II as modernism and literature after World War II as postmodernism. Although there are no explicit definitions, common traits can often be found that distinguished these two categories. In this paper, I will be examining modernism and postmodernism literature, as well as whether postmodernism still continue until now, focusing on Italo Calvino's ... Postmodernism artists enjoyed experimenting on literary techniques, such as metanarrative and lack of character developments, which received mixed response in literature world. One of the most notable works in postmodernism era is Calvino's If On A Winter's Night A Traveler. Just like many postmodern works, If On A Winter's Night A Traveler is a metafiction, using second person narrative form to further emphasis its self–consciousness. Calvino indicated his intention by starting his book with the sentence "You are about to begin reading Italo Calvino's If On A Winter's Night Traveler" (1), addressing the main character of the book as "You" or "the Reader". In addition, the book is high fragmented, another trait commonly found in postmodernism works. The book is divided into 22 parts, each in the form of double chapters, alternating between numbered chapters telling story of the character "You", and unnumbered chapters containing the first chapter of 10 separate stories. With the concept of beginning a whole new story on each unnumbered chapters, Calvino was able to explore a wide range of genres, spanning from mystery to romance, in a single book. The discontinuity of the chapters result in absence of clear image of characters in each stories. Even the main story from the numbered chapters, Calvino used the advantage of having "You" as the main ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Postmodernism And Postmodernism Art And Design... Compare and contrast Modernism and Postmodernism art and design terminology, meaning, context and principles. Modernism and Postmodernism are two art movements that massively contribute to each other's ideas and principals, however have elements within them that are completely opposite to each other. This questions whether their principles actually help each other and if deep down are in somewhat similar, or whether the two ideas are wholly separate. Modernism is a term to describe the movement of new art, and was most active between the late 19th to the early 20th century. Modernism during this time does not necessarily apply to the world of art, but however, other mediums; such as literature and music. The movement meant that artists ... As Modernists hoped for a unanimous view, to project ones ideas across to a world and make them self–realise the world around them. This painting tries to get across Grosz's own self–realisation as it represents how he has delved deep into his own beliefs and understandings and how he has portrayed them in a highly abstract yet explanatory way. Grosz illustrates the modernist theory in many ways. For instance, the painting is mainly a criticism of Weimar Germany, and the actions and dealings of the corrupt President of the Reich at the time, Paul Von Hindenburg, who is shown in the painting. He paints literal 'mindless' bodies to represent the Bureaucrats, or, the people with official positions within the government. The donkey, a money fed German citizen, blinded by their own ignorance, having being led out on a plank that would eventually lead to their fall, and death. The bottom right hand corner, the face of a child being locked away, representing youth, the harm to the future generations and the prevention of a younger voice being heard. And finally to explain the name of the painting, he paints a dollar covered moon, eclipsing the sun, to show the greed and the power money has in overtaking life, or essentially what creates life. • 65. Essay on Metamorphosis and Postmodernism The twentieth century has been marked as a time of great suffering and advancement in human history. One product of this dynamic time is the theory of postmodernism. According to Thomas McEvilley, postmodernism happened in America after people started to realize that history was cruel and that people were not really progressing much. This directly discredited the pre–existing theory of modernism which took its ideology from the three pillars: progress, hierarchy of cultures, universals. McEvilley believes that the modernist ideals are just a way of creating a false reality, a world where no one is suffering and everything is beautiful. In his novel The Metamorphosis, Franz Kafka uses the dramatic transformation of his character, Gregor, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Yet, after Gregor goes through the transformation the traditional family structure is restored to some extent. The father becomes robust and asserts himself as the patriarch of the family. Some would argue that this restoration of hierarchy makes The Metamorphosis modernist and to some extent this assumption is correct. However, the restoration of the family structure comes at the price that Gregor is no longer considered part of the family. This suggests that Kafka was in fact trying to reveal the fragility of the family. Gregor began as the sole provider for the family, yet they turned their backs on him after his transformation, showing how selfish the family really was. Kafka effectively makes the reader empathize with Gregor, even in his hideous state, to ironically make the rest of the Samsa family look like the vermin at the end of the book. The authority of the parents is also easily undermined by Grete, which again portrays the hierarchy of the family to be completely flipped. Grete assumes power over her parents by doing the work that the mother or father should be doing. The mother is shown as a weak force whose sole ability of manipulation is the loosening of her blouse in front of the father. In contrast, the father is depicted as a man in constant fear of Gregor, which he tries to mask by an authoritative power over the family. However, many would argue that the story is not a mockery of the second pillar of modernism. At the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Modernism And Postmodernism Born out of conflict, both modernism and postmodernism were movements that explored the pieces that two global wars had left behind. Modernism focused heavily on the rise of nationalism and capitalism as well as the exploration of individual identity. Some of the more notable literary figures to arise from this period were Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, and Wallace Stevens. Postmodernism, on the other hand, emphasized the rejection of metanarratives, healthy skepticism of universalisms, and the creation of fictional worlds. The influential literary titans from this era include the likes of Kurt Vonnegut, Jorge Luis Borges, and Vladimir Nabokov. During the modernist era, the rise of nationalism and global expansion exploded across the globe. Nationalist ideals began to take hold across Europe and tensions increased as each country attempt to showcase its own believed superiority. Citizens of each nation were identifying themselves as holding common beliefs and ideals supposedly inherent to their country of origin. Rupert Brooke's poem The Soldier is an intriguing example of nationalism and identity from this time period. The poem's narrator is a soldier of British descent who speaks of his possible death and his arrival in "English heaven". His intense love and pride for his country cannot only be seen in the fact that his depiction of heaven is simply another version of England, but also in the first two couplets. He states, "If I should die, think only this of me: / That ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Impact Of Postmodernism Postmodernism was a reaction against the modernism philosophical values and assumptions. Although many agree that there is a thin line between modernism and postmodernism, postmodernism is not modernism. In modernism, scientific theories were used to determine what is true. However, postmodernism allows individuals to question the theories and not take them as facts (Duignan, 2014). While modernism emphasized on objectivism, postmodernism allows extensive subjectivism in all aspects of life. The main features of a postmodernist are that he or she is overly subjective, sensitive towards the role of ideology in assertion and maintenance of political and economic power. On the other hand, a modernist for example, there exists objective natural reality which is independent of human beings, their practices and relationships (Duignan, 2014). Such realities ... Although it lacks clear doctrine, the distinction noticeable between the 1860s to 1950s and 1950s to date is clear evidence that there was and still there is such movement as postmodernism. Postmodernists qualify their theoretical position as advocating for inclusivity and democracy in the society because of their keenness to recognize unjust enlightenment and challenging it with equally valid perspectives. • 73. Postmodernism : A Consensus On Postmodernism Of Precise Ambiguity A Consensus on Postmodernism C. Jencks, H. Klotz & W. Curtis Postmodernism is a universal movement, present in every art and discipline. In architecture, postmodernism is precise as well as ambiguous thereby in need of an explorative pursuit for a consensus of what is meant by the movement in this perspective – between the works of Charles Jencks, a primary theorist of this architectural turn; Heinrich Klotz, a leading architectural critic; and William Curtis, an architectural historian. The progression of this paper is highly influenced with Jencks' studies as his works are often times referenced as well by both Klotz and Curtis in their individual interpretations and further accompanied with either supporting statements or contradictions. Charles Jencks suggests the concept of double coding in several aspects. Primarily, that architects become public–oriented rather than peer–oriented; to design structures that appeal to both these constituencies and beyond the architectural world. The concept of double coding prompted a new approach to architecture to accommodate these distinct needs – an approach that was a form of eclecticism of both old and new styles that now dominate the present world. On his book on Modern Architecture, Curtis writes that modern architecture was faulted for it's "supposed lack of 'recognizable imagery'" towards the end of the 1970s. This statement supports the idea of Jencks' double coding where architects must now make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Postmodernism And Modernism In Society The definition of Compassion is "when an individual has a sympathetic response to the misfortunate of others". Compassion forms most of Non–profit organizations as their main aim is to improve the situation at hand. A good example of this would be the feeding kitchens in around Cape Town city center whereby the people from the community provide and serve meals to the needy. The word Generosity is when someone performs some sort of an act of kindness that is beneficial to others. A form of this would be from the community as they choose to donate or volunteer towards or for the NPO. There are many things that postmodernism can relate to, such as cultural, political and social characteristics. In this case of postmodernism we have a look at the social outlook of it. Postmodernism refers to the contemporary characteristics of society; it is a theoretical analysis of two different views this being classical or modernist. Postmodernism relates not only to a period in time but also to new ideas resulting from "modernism". The concept of postmodernism came about in the mid to late 20th century. Within a postmodern society there are more anti– ideological ideas, for instance the feminist, racial equality and gay rights movements, all of which is in favor of the Democratic Party. An active citizen is someone who takes on the role in their community by volunteering their time and themselves to anything required to uplift the community in which they live, to help uplift the lives of ... • 77. Postmodernism : Modernism And Postmodernism Modernism and Postmodernism To begin with, to determine the meaning of postmodernism is possible only through the relationship with modernism. Modernism in modern science is understood as a kind of cultural consciousness, which is implemented in the artistic practice of symbolism, expressionism and acmeism. In the socio–historical context, it means the period of modernism in the development of culture from the late nineteenth to mid–twentieth century, that is, from Impressionism to a new novel and the theatre of the absurd. Modernism as a world based on the principles of urbanism (the cult of the city), technologism (the cult of the industry), primitivism (the cult of the underdeveloped role model), and others. Postmodernism simultaneously grows and is repelled by the picture of the world, established in modernism. Overcoming modernist tendencies, postmodern cult of the city replaces cosmism, values of industrial society – environmentalism, denying mindless nature and asserting the need for harmonious relations between society and nature. Thus, the ideological concept of postmodernism includes the principles of cosmism, environmentalism and post humanism in a culture of active includes sexual minorities, and the ideas of feminism. Art of modernism and postmodernism is the realization of a universal picture of the world, reflecting the human consciousness of the twentieth century, the main feature of which is the new principle of the relation of being and consciousness. ...
