Addition Subtraction
P= positive N=negative P= positive N= negative
P + P Add both integers and
the answer will be
positive
P - P 1st integer is
larger: Subtract
the two integers
and the answer
will be positive
P - N
Change the equation to addition, and
change the sign of the second integer.
Add both integers and answer will be
positive.
N - N
Change the equation to
addition and change the
sign of the second
integer. Subtract both
integers and take the
sign of the larger integer
in the answer.
ex: 4 + 2 = 6   ex: 4 - 2 = 2
ex: 1 + 6 = 7
P - P
2nd integer is
larger: change
the equation to
addition and
change the sign
of the second
integer. Subtract
both integers and
use the sign of
the larger integer
in the answer
ex: 6 - - 2 =
Subtract both integers
and use the sign of the
larger integer in your
answer
switch to 6 + 2 = 8
P + N
N + P N - P
Change the equation to addition, and
change the sign of the second integer.
Add the two integers together. Answer
will be negative.
ex: -2 - - 4 =
switch to -2 + 4
ex: 3 + -2 = 1 * -2 + 4 = 2
ex: -4 + 2 = -2
ex: 3 - 4 ex: -2 - 3 = ex: -3 - - 2 =
N + N
Add both integers and
answer will be negative
switch to 3 + -4
= switch to: -2 + -3 = switch to -3 + 2
subtract: 4 - 3 =
1 add 2 + 3, answer will be negative * -3 + 2 = -1
take the sign of
the larger integer
*-2 + -3 = -5
ex: -3 + -2 = -5 3 + - 4 = -1
ex: -4 + -6 = -10
Multiplication
P= positive N= negative
P x P = P
ex: 2 x 4 = 8
P x N = N
ex: 6 x -2 = -12
N x P = N
ex: -4 x 3 = -12
N x N = P
ex: -2 x -3 = 6
Division
P= positive N= negative

Turn equation into a multiplication problem, then solve for the
missing integer. Use the multiplication procedural chart (to the left)
to add the correct sign to your answer.
P / P N / P P / N N / N
ex: 10 / 5 ex: -10 / 5 ex: 10 / -5 ex: -10 / -5
5 x __ = 10 5 x __ = -10 * -5 x __ = 10 * -5 x __ = -10
5 x 2 = 10 5 x -2 = -10 * -5 x -2 = 10 * -5 x 2 = -10
