Deterioration to the patient’s respiratory function is one of the first indicators of acute illness (BTS, 2008; Resuscitation Council, 2006). Respiratory disorders are a major cause of critical illness and accounts for one of the main reasons for admission to a critical care unit/high dependency unit.
By undertaking a full and systematic respiratory assessment the nurse is in a firm position to act on findings (from the data collected) and ensure that prompt and appropriate medical/nursing interventions are initiated.
