On a Day Like Today: SGU+MEP The partnership of St. George's University (SGU) and
Medical Education Programs (MEP) carved in the pristine sands of Grenada by our
premed and postbac students now studying at SGU. August 26-September 2nd, 2019

“No other medical school in the world provides more new doctors to the US
healthcare system” boasts a sign at the Maurice Bishop Airport welcoming
visitors. Let’s discover together why by visiting SGU campus together!
The TRUE BLUE name of the campus is derived from the indigo plantations
that at one time dominated the island.

The roots of this big tree near the

emblematic of the deeply rooted study
system, the tradition and strength of the
university's education.
Twelve years ago, Dean Bob Ryan
invited us to visit the campus and we
promised that SGU would be the first
campus among our 120 partner
schools that we will visit. Promise
made, promise kept! We finally made
it!

Let’s discover together one of the best campuses in the world!
Everyone listening to the introduction of SGU at open houses in Toronto by Ms. Sandra Banner should
know that this statement is no exaggeration. 2000 pictures later that used all the memory in our
cameras and there were still sights we had not capture. Here is the new, modern Admission Office

flying saucers; perhaps
they'd like to study here as

The campus is home to the most modern classrooms and technology.
Attendance is taken for each class and students attend classes religiously.
We would ask them to take a picture for us while walking on campus and
they would politely decline, as they had to be in class. Out of curiosity, we
looked at their laptop screens, and amazingly, the vast majority matched
the professor’s slide!

The school’s facilities with respect to anatomy, 3D printing of organs,
cadaver dissections, and other learning resources are at par if not superior
to the best medical schools in the world. A visit to the recently expanded
cadaver lab and demonstrations definitely will impress any potential
student.The visit was facilitated by Dr. Rachel George -Clinical Instructor of
Anatomical Sciences

We visited a huge chain of first class simulation labs, where students interact with standardized
patients and learn the science and art of medicine! Dr Anna Cyrus -Murden Deputy Chair
Department of Clinical Skills impressed us with pediatric mannequins, other that simulated heart
and yet another one lung diseases.

This is the road our students take to go to the Simulation Centre facility,
where the latest technology is employed in reproducing human bodies with
various pathologies! The Centre is out of this world and the staff is amazing!
We saw a hands on demonstration and tried to save a myocardial infarction
case in the emergency room!

We visited a huge chain of top class simulation labs where students interact with standardized
patients and learn the science and art of medicine! The patient here Rosi has abdominal pain. :-)

Hello Mister Bonny! This state of the art laboratory could
make any student in Canada or US really jealous!

Outdoor (yes!!!) or indoor small
group study spaces are
everywhere!
There is no excuse not to get
anything but the highest scores!

The library at SGU is proportionate to our students’ thirst for knowledge !

20,000 leaders in the healthcare field have been educated here during SGU’s
43 year history. Each postcard in the library display represents one year! We
noticed the portrait of Dr. Rao’s, one of the first five members of the faculty
only to meet him in person later on that day!

This is the image on the Canadian brochure. It’s exhilarating to see it in person! Some of our
students swim to the island in the background for a once a year charity benefit.

This open air study room can be transformed into a high end banquet hall for
receptions, including the white coat ceremony. Now, this is what we call
smart design!

If you have a break or

lunch, the beach is on
campus! Fishermen
sell their fresh
catches on the spot!

fresh fish.

We lifted weights in a million dollar gym for the
first time. Some people who, like us, never
exercise, will start to go to the gym here! “Too
heavy,” says Rosalind. “Oops – I should face the
other way,” says Lorelei.

the valley, the
seaside campus
never ceases to
amaze visitors with

and vegetation.

Our camera captured something
beautiful at every step. Mr Josh
Yetman, Director of Communication
was the best guide possible. He is
so proud of his school, so fun, and
so tolerant of our frequent photo
breaks and kept us on tracks:)!

On the hill a serene part of the campus hosts a monument to some turbulent history when 20
American soldiers died during invasion of USA in Grenada in 1983 against Cuban marxist army.

The campus tour continues with ever more amazing facilities to
discover! Our students are provided with all the logistics, guidance, and
support they need, not only to succeed, but to reach their full potential!

Our amazing guide Josh, has given tours to such dignitaries as Prince Charles and Camilla, and made
us feel like royals as well. His pleasure and enthusiasm in taking us to see the campus was such that a
casual observer would suppose that it was the first time he had given the tour himself. Here he
showed a new residence, which doubles as a five star hotel.

Dormitories are offered to all students in their first semester. The
view of the Caribbean Sea in the laundry room and the laudry
service itself is complementary. For this particular residence, the
students are selected through a lottery system.

reminded us of Florence with
its red roof tiles. There are so
many tiles that they had to be
procured at multiple factories.
Some have solar panels on
them!

The Caribbean House is a favorite place for students, faculty and staff alike! It
was the central point for the Family and friends week-end.

SGU bus routes cover every location. The buses are free
and safe and utilize space efficiently through the use of
folding chairs. All you need to ride is the badge!
So proud of our visitor and bus badges that can be
used as a VIP card in the island as well :)They can get
you anywhere in the city and campus with the freeSGU
shuttles that run everywhere an SGU student might
possibly want to go: from the campus to shops, from
the beaches to their rented apartments.

Soccer, tennis, basketball, boxing anyone? There are
many opportunities to take a break from study and
relax during a study break!

The campus is illuminated like Las Vegas at night.
Students play all manner of sports, from soccer to tennis.

There is a club for everyone at SGU, from
religious based groups to associations of
ethnic and cultural identity, from residency
interest to leisure! The Canadian club is
among the most active! The picture is that of
a hidden gem, the Chabad Centre for Jewish
students (representing about 10% of the
student population) near the campus. It
sponsors prayers and a fabulous free meal
every Friday night. Rabbi Rozmarin and his
wife dedicate their time to support the
students and they have a campus office. We
could not take a picture during the Shabbat
meal, as it is forbidden on Shabbat, but the
30 students and we can testify to the warm
atmosphere that enveloped us.

The muslim life is very vibrant at SGU! We met with Nooruddin Hashmi, the president of Muslim
Student Association at SGU who showed us the large tent and the support muslim students
have to lead a religious life on campus. We also met his cousin who is Canadian and many
muslim students including so many from our premedical and postbac program at Medical
Education Programs.

Up the hill, the Rituals Café and the Caribbean House are
favorite hangouts for students, faculty, and staff alike!
Down the hill Subway is really popular in the campus!
Maybe soon there will be a Tim Hortons!

The food is delicious but is, as on any
island, a bit pricey. Every Tuesday there is
egg, vegetable, and fruit market on campus,
featuring amazing produce from the locals!
Fresh, affordable fruits
are abundant and so
delicious from local
vendors! Some are sold
at the bus stop!

Others prefer the IGA experience
that includes most of the favorite
foods fr0m home and amazing
island specialties.

If you run out of food you can just fish! Here we were taking credit
for the catch of a big red snapper fish by Sam, a Canadian student
from Toronto and Denis from Russia.

Professors and staff are very much appreciated here at SGU. This is the
Faculty Club swimming pool. Too bad we did not pack bathing suits for our
trip :)

royalty! It does, in a
way; the professors and
staff there are nothing
less than world class
and deserve the best!

Safety is of principal concern
everywhere, from the entrance to
the campus once your badge is
checked to the exit. An FBI like
security stations identifies every
alarm and monitors cameras from
all over the campus. Every student
has an app that can be used to
sound the alert about any problem,
this way students feel protected all
the way. Our guide simulated an
emergency alarm and we were
located in a matter of seconds. We
even located his wife -a professor
in the Microbiology Department
and later on met her in the campus.
At the entrance the security checks
each and every pass of all students
in the bus. Some students opt to
buy cars, however driving is quite
difficult on the left and hilly
volcanic island.

Once the tour was
done, we revisited
some of the most
beautiful corners of the
campus by ….train!

One thing our young students didn’t tell us about the SGU campus is how
hilly it is! There is a little train that takes you everywhere on campus. Some
places remind you of San Francisco, and the vegetation is also similar! It
was so much fun traveling up and down the hills that we took the train
around the campus three times!

A sunset BBQ for family and friends- the perfect way to end a terrific trip! Goodbye SGU!

through the eyes of our students who complete premedical, postbaccalaureate, or
prerequisite programs with us at Medical Education Programs in Toronto and continue
their medical or veterinary school journey with St. George University!
