There is no typical study abroad student – students from every
background, every major, and every level can and do study abroad!
STUDY ABROAD IS FOR EVERYONE9
pao.ucsd.edu
Three Common Myths About Study Abroad:
 Study abroad is too expensive
 Study abroad is only for certain
majors; and especially not for
science, math, and engineering
majors
 Study abroad delays graduation

Diego’s campus, and sometimes may even be cheaper. Check out our
Scholarships Database to search for all of the opportunities available to
you.
STUDY ABROAD IS AFFORDABLE
51% of UC San Diego students studying
abroad qualify for financial aid
UC San Diego students receive about
$500,000 in special scholarships to study
abroad each year.
UC San Diego consistently ranks in the Top
10 for Gilman Scholarship Awards. In the
2011-2012 school year, our students were
awarded $124,500 towards their study
abroad programs.

FINANCIAL AID TIPS12
pao.ucsd.edu
When looking for a more cost effective study
abroad program, look at programs that occur
during the academic year.
Financial Aid is available for programs during the
summer and fall. However summer is viewed as a
non-essential term and there is less aid available.
Cost of a program is heavily dependent on the
cost of living in a particular location. Consider
places where the dollar is worth more or consider
small towns vs big cities.

graduate at faster rates than their
peers who choose not to study
abroad.

Not required to meet with an advisor
before applying, but recommended
Rolling application deadline, usually
