Apache CloudStack (ACS) is one of the best-of-breed in the current IaaS landscape. However, despite its high functional quality, its technical quality (the one you observe when you look "under the hood") is bellow industry average. Miguel Ferreira was initiated in ACS development in the early days of 2014 and presents, in this talk, his perspective, as a newcomer, on how it felt to him like he was working on a skyscraper in the early days of the XX century, without safety-net, nor rope. Richard Tibbetts, CTO, StreamBase Systems. StreamSQL EventFlow is one of the most popular languages for Complex Event Processing (CEP), a data management paradigm for real-time applications. Based on a stream-relational data model common to other CEP languages, EventFlow is unique in that it is a visual language. This talk will focus on the design of visual representations for key features including event dispatch, modularity, data parallelism, polymorphism, and dependency injection, and on the co-development of an Eclipse-based IDE along with a new programming language. StreamSQL EventFlow is the primary programming language for the StreamBase Event Processing Platform. Complex Event Processing platforms are used to process large volumes of event-oriented data in real-time, often in latency-critical applications such as securities trading. Combining clustering, messaging, queuing, data storage, and application logic into one system minimizes latency and gives the programmer control over all aspects of the application. StreamSQL EventFlow is an executable visual language for building CEP applications, unlike visual environments designed for non-developers, or architecture-focused modeling tools. The talk will cover experiences overcoming prejudice against visual programming languages, and how critical development tools are to that process. We will also discuss some details of the implementation including the compiler, a visual debugger, and diff/merge functionality.

At Maersk Line, not only the world's biggest container ships, the 'Triple-E' class vessels were built. Continuous Integration and Delivery on a similar scale using Hudson, Maven and tools like Kokki (similar to Puppet or Chef, but written in Python) are also practiced there. This session is going to give a brief overview of Multi-Configuration (Matrix) job types used in most projects at Maersk around the globe. Things are being built and deployed in a heterogenous environment, otherwise probably found only at very large vendors of Public Cloud services like Google or Amazon. Provisioning of various OS is automated through Vagrant. Management and Planning of all tasks and 'Sprints' is following Agile principles, especially DevOps style Kanban. Where possible planned and controlled by Eclipse-based tools such as Mylyn Connectors accessing planning tools like TeamConcert, Xplanner or Mantis. While feature projects use Eclipse for Java or Scala/Play!, the DevOps teams use PyDev for Jython/WSTL or Python development.

In this session Luciano will explore the different projects that compose the Jupyter ecosystem; including Jupyter Notebooks, JupyterLab, JupyterHub and Jupyter Enterprise Gateway. Jupyter Notebooks are the current open standard for data science and AI model development, and IBM is dedicated to contributing to their success and adoption. Continuing the trend of building out the Jupyter ecosystem, Luciano will introduce Elyra. It's a project built to extend JupyterLab with AI-centric capabilities. He'll showcase the extensions that allow you to build Notebook Pipelines, execute notebooks as batch jobs, navigate and execute Python scripts, and tie neatly into Notebook versioning.
