Narcissus Quagliata was born in Rome, Italy in 1942 where he studied painting with the
metaphysical painter Giorgio De Chirico. At the age of 19, Narcissus moved to the United States
and studied at the San Francisco Art Institute receiving both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in
Painting & Graphics. Soon after graduation, he began working in glass and continues to use it as
his principle form of artistic expression.
Narcissus Quagliata has received twice, grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for his
work in the U.S. His fine art works, in glass and watercolors, have been exhibited and collected
by major museums and private collectors internationally.
Presently, his main residence is in Mexico, but he also works in the United States, Europe as well
as in the Far East.
Major public commissions of notice are:

Class description:
From the mind of the artist to a complete presentation to the client.
The purpose of this class is to guide the students through the process of creating a project from
conception to its presentation to a client or architect. Painters, architects, and glass artists are
invited to discover the potential of glass as a medium, and turn this awareness into a project that
can be realized.
The course will include these features:
- Analysis of the site for which the artist will invent.
- Development of the many initial raw ideas.
- Selection and development of the idea.
- Selection of the techniques to be used.
Development of the presentation:
- Artist's Statement of Intent.
- Maquette creation.
- Written description of the project.
- Analysis and presentation of the budget for the work and the timetable for its realization.
The overall goal of the workshop is for the student to understand five
basic components necessary to a successful glass project:
- Architecture: Love for and curiosity about architecture are components for success.
- Inspiration and Themes: How to make them individual, unique and relevant in any
given Environment.
- Glass: as a medium of light transmission.
- Techniques: How to use the proper technique for any given project.
- People: How to deal with the client on the one hand and the fabrication studio on the
other.
Since 1866 Derix Glasstudios have been involved in working with Art Glass in Architecture.
Their services encompasses working with traditional to contemporary Art Glass techniques for
exterior and interior applications for ecclesiastic and public bodies.
Derix Glasstudios is the ideal place for this class to be held. The working studio is a
laboratory of ongoing projects and has a wealth of useful documentation on completed projects
by hundreds of artists in buildings - modern and ancient.

Organization:
Schedule
English will be the main language of communication. The Course day starts at 9 a.m. and ends
between 5 and 6 p.m. The Lunch break is from 1 to 2 pm. and will be served at DERIX
GLASSTUDIOS GmbH & Co.KG.
To see extraordinary art glass projects, there is a one day excursion planned for Sunday
September 8, 2013. The schedule for each individual day will be announced at the beginning of
the course.
Enrolment and Fees
Workshop fee amount is 1840โฌ and covers instruction, lunch, excursion and basic supplies.
Attached please find a list for accommodation that needs to be self-organized and is not included
in the Workshop fee.
Application deadline is June 15th 2013. Applicants will be asked to pay a nonrefundable 400โฌ
deposit. This is required within one (1) week after Application. The 400โฌ deposit will be applied
to your total fee; you will be sent an Invoice showing your remaining balance. The balance of
your fees is due on August 1st. 2013.
Cancellation, Changes and refunds
All cancellations must be submitted in writing to:

If you cancel your enrollment before August 1st 2013, you will receive a refund of total fees,
excluding the non-refundable deposit of 400โฌ. No refund will be made if you cancel after this
date or if you decide to leave class during the course.
Event Cancellation, Refunds
A minimum number of 8 participants are required. If the minimum number of participants is not
reached till June 25th 2013, the organizer (DERIX GLASSTUDIOS GmbH & Co.KG) reserves the
right to cancel the course. Also, if for any important reasons, (for example illness or accident) the
instructor is not able to lead the course, DERIX GLASSTUDIOS GmbH & Co.KG reserves the right
to cancel the course on short-term notice. In this case, all paid fees will be fully refunded. Any
further claims are excluded.

Materials
Please bring your own tools like: pencils, brushes, rulers, paints and sketchbook.
Also, if you wish to create your designs on Computer, please bring your Laptop with you.
Printers and print paper are available.
Wireless internet is free for access by personal laptops in the entire Studio.
Travelling to Taunusstein
Taunusstein is located about 10 km. northwest of Wiesbaden and about 10km west of Idstein
and the Autobahn A3.
Nearest airport is Frankfurt am Main (about 45 km away from Taunusstein).
From Frankfurt airport, you can reach Taunusstein going by train to Wiesbaden Main train
station; from there taking the bus to Taunusstein.
