  2. 2. What is the Special Olympics?<br />A non-profit organization dedicated to empowering those with disabilities.<br />
  3. 3. What do they do?<br />They provide year round training in over 30 Olympic style events<br />
  4. 4. The History of the Organization<br /><ul><li>It started with Anne Burke and her competition for those with disabilities.
  5. 5. But with the help of Eurice Kennedy the ground work for the Special Olympics were formed</li></li></ul><li>The Motto<br />“Let me win, but If I can not win, let me be brave in my attempt”<br />
  6. 6. Volunteers<br /><ul><li>The Organization is ran by volunteers. No one is paid
  7. 7. Kentucky alone has over 1,000 volunteers and could use more</li></li></ul><li>Athletes Continue to Join<br /><ul><li>In the 70’s the Special Olympics went international
  8. 8. They started with a 1000 athletes and continued to grow
  9. 9. Today there are over 3.1 million athletes
  10. 10. The USA leads in the # of athletes w/ 555,000</li></li></ul><li>Assumptions<br /><ul><li>Many believe that everyone wins in the Special Olympics. WRONG!
  11. 11. It’s as competitive as any other sport. There are losers and winners</li></li></ul><li>Competitions <br />The State level competition was held at UofL until Rick Pitinio stopped it. He found it a new home at several local high schools.<br />
  12. 12. Fundraising<br /><ul><li>Even though its ran by volunteers they still need money.
  13. 13. They hold many fundraisers in the area
  14. 14. Polar Bear Plunge
  15. 15. Harley Raffle
  16. 16. Texas Roadhouse Armadillo Run</li></li></ul><li>Special Olympics In Hardin County<br /><ul><li>They have over 150 athletes.
  17. 17. They offer 4 of the 30 events
  18. 18. Track and Field
  19. 19. Cheerleading
  20. 20. Basketball
  21. 21. Bowling
  22. 22.
