The Data Dilemma: How to Keep Your Data Protected

  1. 1. 1 THE DATA DILEMMA How To Keep Your Data Protected 1
  2. 2. 2 WHY IS DATA BACKUP IMPORTANT? 96% of all business workstations are not being backed up. 34% of companies do not test their backups. The average cost of downtime per hour is between $25,000 to $50,000.
  3. 3. 3 3 44% of data loss occurs from hardware or system malfunctions. DATA LOSS STATISTICS 14% of data loss occurs from software corruption. 7% of data loss occurs from computer viruses. 65% of data loss is caused by human error.
  4. 4. 4 4 DATA LOSS STATISTICS 50% of tape backups fail to restore correctly. More than 50% of professionals back up their data to a misconfigured tape backup system. 60% of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of the disaster.
  5. 5. 5 DATA BACKUP SOLUTIONS TAPE BACKUP Magnetic tape is used for storing duplicate copies of hard disk files. A tape-based backup strategy requires the IT team to physically transport and store backup tapes in an off-site location. DISK BACKUP A hard disk based storage device is used to store and retrieve backup data. This solution offers faster backup and restores than tape, but it is stored in a data center onsite. Backups will be affected if disaster strikes your office or data center. CLOUD BACKUP Backups are stored in an offsite repository owned by a cloud provider and accessed remotely through the network whenever a recovery is needed. This is the most convenient, but also most expensive option for data backup.
  6. 6. 6 6 CLOUD BACKUP STATISTICS Global revenue for cloud backup services grew by 225% in 2014. 51% of companies still use hardware-based backup solutions. 23% of companies are “considering” cloud backup options.
  7. 7. 7 7 WHAT IS THE BEST SOLUTION? Mindsight’s white paper, Moving Away from Tape: Strategies for Advancing to a More Modern Backup Solution, takes a deeper dive into the evolution of backup solutions from tape to cloud. We break down the value, shortcomings, and challenges of each of the leading data backup solutions as they respond to the challenges of their predecessors and we also give our recommendation as to what the best solution is for most IT environments.
