Economicdevelopment in recentdecades has beenenormous. Unfortunately, wealth
and prosperity are unevenlygenerated. Thisinequalityiscausing social problems
and politicalinstability in almostallregions of theworld. Theend of theColdWar and
therapidintegration of theworldeconomyhavenotsolvedthepersistentproblems of
extreme poverty, debt, underdevelopment and tradeimbalances.
FortheUnitedNationspeoplesdevelopmentisthebestway of achievingpolitical,
economic and social. Forthe UN isconcernedthatalmosthalf of thepopulationisstill
living onlessthantwodollars a day. Furthermore, almostonesixth of
theworldpopulationisilliterate and more than 1,000 millionhave no water.
Worldwidethere are over 140 millionunemployed and about 750 million are
underemployed.
At present, the UN
remainstheonlyinstitutiondedicatedtofindingwaystoensurethattheeconomicexpansio
n and globalization are guidedbypoliciesthatguarantee human wellbeing,
sustainabledevelopment, povertyeradication, and
fairtradeprinciplesreducingoverwhelmingdebt.
