Welcome to the class where we try to ease your fears about having a baby come into your home in a short time. Babies grow quickly and develop through their interactions with the people around them and their environment (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015). Babies are alert from birth. They take cues from care giver’s faces and body language. Babies and toddlers watch all the time. Their wheels are always turning and soaking up what they see/learn. Mothers who hold their babies all the time, co-sleep and feel that you cannot show too much attention on babies may be from more collectivist cultures where the family is essential in all aspects of life. What is some common advice that you hear about babies or parenting? Perhaps don’t spoil crying babies, babies should sleep on their stomach. Some of this information is accurate and other is not. These ideas are perpetuated by cultural beliefs (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015). If a culture has an emphasis on independence and self-regulation, parents might be less willing to soothe a crying infant immediately. One thing to keep in mind is that babies cannot communicate with you any other way than cry, so don’t get angry when they are just trying to express their need for food, diapers, or love. As they grow into toddlers, you will notice that they always explore their surroundings. You will notice that at times they cry for no reason and seek your attention. Through this action, children are beginning to develop a secure attachment and know that no matter where you go, I am here when you return (This is developing healthy attachment.) · Chapter 8 Chapter 8: The Preschool Years The preschool years are important. Research shows us that children who attend preschool do better in kindergarten and first grade. However, not every state offers public preschool. And, many schools that do offer this, offer it only to children with special needs (and then regular education students may need to win a lottery to get in). Although children who do not have a special need may attend, they are usually screened and placed on waiting lists. Also, there is typically a tuition to pay for the child if he/she does not have a special need. Your text introduces the idea of universal prekindergarten: providing preschool for every child whose parents want it (preschool for all children) on page. But, keep in mind that universal prek doesn’t mean that your child must attend, it simply means that it is available if you would like it. I point this out because many people (in particular, stay at home moms) think that this is the government’s way of not allowing them the choice to stay home and educate their own child. Therefore, there are parents who are against this. In the past, socialization skills were the focus of prekindergarten however; sad but true, today there is a decided move away from socialization as the primary function for enrolling children in preschool. Preschools are now promoted as places to accomplish many more skills than just socialization! This plays a role in my comments above about not all parents favoring universal prek; the stress toward academic success is definitely a concern for many. Of course, high-quality affordable preschool can be difficult to come by. We know that children benefit from attending high-quality preschool, but high-quality preschool also often comes with a high price. Thus, it can be difficult for many parents to have the ability to send their child to preschool. The children of today are different than the children of the past. Aside from the many academic expectations the children have placed upon them, we may need to find new and innovative ways to teach them - making the learning environment interesting and engaging everyday! Physical Development During the preschool years, children begin to "slim down" as they have a more elongated look. Their muscle development continues to develop and their actions become more precise. They enjoy activities such as drawing, painting, cutting, and coloring. They also learn more about how to take care of themselves as they learn about hygiene - washing hands and brushing teeth - as well as the ability to dress one's self. Social/Emotional Development Preschool children are in Erikson’s psychosocial development state of initiative versus guilt. Self-knowledge Self-knowledge is defined here as "a thor- ough understanding of one's own cultural roots and group affiliations" (Haberman & Post 1998). Before we as teachers can address the needs of very young children, we must first become more aware of our own cultural beliefs and practices. By taking a good look at our early relationships and childhood experiences, we can recognize the influence that these factors have on our role as caregivers, as well as on our feelings, attitudes, and beliefs about children. 8.1 Problem Solving with Adults Standard 1 of NAEYC's Early Childhood Program Standards and Accreditation Criteria (2005a) states, "The program promotes positive relationships among all children and adults to encourage each child's sense of individual worth and belonging as part of a community and to foster each child's ability to contribute as a responsible community member" (p. 9). The rationale for the standard is that positive relationships and a positive, nurturing, sensitive climate are essential for the development of emotional regulation, constructive interactions, and overall learning in children (NAEYC, 2005a). Children develop a positive sense of self, and they are encouraged to respect and cooperate with others. However, problems, conflicts, disagreements, and distrust can—and often do—develop. These can occur between the family and the program, between staff within the programs—staff to staff, directors and staff, staff and consultants—and between children in the program. When this occurs, caregivers need to engage in problem solving. While no family or early care and education program is ever totally without conflicts and issues to solve, the goal is, firstly, to create an environment where constructive problem solving can take place and, secondly, to be able to constructively solve problems. Feelings Conflicts, confusion, and disagreements can cause intense feelings among those involved. To address conflicts and disagreements, we must try to determine where these feelings come from. In the heat of the moment, this will probably not be possible, but once we have had time to reflect, we need to look at the feelings that disagreements and problems produce. We all have feelings, and it is very important to accept and appreciate these feelings. We need to reflect on our feelings and on why certain things make us feel a certain way. Feelings are complex, subjective experiences that involve physical and mental aspects of self—they can be felt, expressed, acted on, and thought about (Greenspan & Greenspan, 1985). All feelings have value and are useful—even ones we view as negative. Feelings are how we react to experiences, and they help us organize and make sense of our world. The great works of art, music, drama, and dance are based on feelings—some pleasant, and some dark and tragic. We learn about feelings from our childhood experiences. When children are young, adults label the child's emotions: "That bang scared you!" "The dog's bark upset you!" Part of this socialization process is to help children know how to respond to the environment—for safety, to develop appropriate reactions to the environment, and to teach children culturally appropriate responses to their feelings. Other feelings, such as those of love, trust, fear, excitement, and surprise, are natural responses to the environment that help us feel good about ourselves and the social environment (Rogers, 1980). In some of these societies, racial discrimination and racial tension also exist.
