2. For our coursework, we have decided to create
a trailer for a mystery/thriller type of film, so I
have done some further research into this
genre and the type of posters that are produced
for this genre in order to aid us when we create
our own film poster.
3. This is the movie poster
for the film, Unknown. It
is a quite simple poster,
it features who we as
the audience assume is
the main character
looking off into the
distance, with light
shone on his face. I
think that lighting is an
important element for
this genre, as it is a
mytery/thriller, so the
use of light on one face
may be used to imply to
the audience that this is
the story about the
character finding out the
truth about what
happened to him.
The editing shows part of the poster as
kind of pixelated, suggesting that the
character has forgotten what has
happened to him, like a glitch in his brain.
I think the use of similar
colours reflects the film
story, all the blues blur
together, reflecting his
confusion
The tag line ‘Take back
your life’ is quite ominous
and vague, I think that it’s
been used to draw the
audience in and make
them wonder what could
have happened to the
character.
We known that Liam
Neeson plays the main
character, and the
colouring of the title, -
having ‘Liam Neeson’
written in the same blue
(representing confusion)
as the ‘un’ part of
‘Unknown’, I think, is a
clever indicator to the
audience that Liam
Neeson’s character
doesn’t know what has
happened to him.
Making this obvious to
the audience seems to
be the main theme for
this movie poster.
4. This is the movie poster for
the film ‘Inception’. I think
that this poster doesn’t
give much away about the
film, and I think that that
was intended, as this is a
psychological film that
makes the audience think,
so it is only fitting that the
poster should do the same.
The title ‘Inception’ has
been written in bold red
letters, which helps it to
stand out from the dark
background colours used.
The use of props in the
main characters hand, a
gun, gives the audience an
idea of what type of film
this will be, most likely
action filled. The shot used
(seems as though the
audience is standing
behind this character)
The tag line, ‘Your mind is the scene of the crime’ paired
with the fact that the main character is holding a weapon
suggests that he is this ‘criminal’
The audience sees what
seems to be a large city that’s
been destroyed/flooded by
something, and the tag line
suggests that the main
character has done this. In this
case, the face of the main
character isn’t seen, this may
be to emphasise the ‘mystery’
element of this film, and so this
could be a technique that we
use ourselves.
Below the title, ‘From the
director of The Dark Knight’ is
written, this is to show and
appeal to the audience who
may have been fans of ‘The
Dark Knight’ and so might
encourage them to go and
watch this film.
5. In comparison, I think that both of these film posters use
lighting really effectively. For the ‘Unknown’ poster, the
lighting is used to highlight the main character, whereas in
the ‘Inception’ poster, the lighting is coming from infront of
the main character, and instead highlights the surrondings
in which the character is standing. They are quite different
uses of lighting as the first one doesn’t give anything away
about the situation or scenario, the poster is solely focused
on the main character. For the second one, it is the other
way around, nothing much is given away about the main
character, instead the audience are given a setting as to
where this story is taking place. I think that this shows that
when we make our own posters, in terms of lighting anyway
we could really do anything, as these posters are quite
different and yet they both keep an element of
mystery/suspense about them.
6. The colours used in both posters are fairly dark, mainly
blues for the background, with colours like white and red to
help the titles/tag lines etc stand out to catch the readers
eye.
Both posters, I think are quite vague. There is a lot more to
look at in the second one, (there are buildings and a
flooded city etc) but they’re kept quite simple in that we only
see the main characters, and not much is indicated about
what the film will be about. I think that this is a marketing
technique used to try and intrigue the viewer, who would
then hopefully go and watch the film and/or the trailer.
7. For our movie poster, some key things that I
think we should take into account;
● Lighting
● Use Dark Colours
● Keep the actual poster quite vague
● Include actors names on the poster
