2. Pakistan being signatory also has to comply with WTO
agreements.
Government of Pakistan is committed to prepare the
leather industry to compete in international Market and
relies on its ability to trade with the world for economic
growth and stability.
The rules governing international trade operated
mainly through the WTO are crucial in creating a fair
and stable trading environment.
3. Leather Sector of Pakistan is not only facing competition
with developing countries, but also with the developed
countries, being producer of leather and leather
products.
In this scenario Technical improvements, market research,
and adoption of Cleaner Production Techniques, use of
eco-friendly chemicals are a must to be more effective and
to continue business for the leather and leather products
industry
4. Pakistan needs operational expertise, research &
development, capacity to solve the problems
associated with the development of leather sector.
Social and Environmental Compliance.

Key success factors
14. Determination of values ……..
14. water vapor permeability
15. Leather Softness.
16. Shrinkage temperature (up to 100 °C)
17. Fogging
15. Purposes of testing………
COLOUR FASTNESS TO CROCKING (Leather)
STANDARD METHOD : SLF/IUF-452
To determine the amount of color transferred from the colored leather to other surface (Cotton
cloth) by rubbing.
TENSILE STRENGTH
STANDARD METHOD : IUP-6; BS 3144 method 5
Improperly lubricated and partially degraded leathers give low values for tensile strength. The
orientation of the specimen in relation to the backbone and the location of the specimen on the
hide influence the results significantly. This test method is excellent for development, control,
specification acceptance, and service evaluation of leather.
DOUBLE EDGE TEAR STRENGTH (Baumann method)
STANDARD METHOD : IUP-8 (SLP-7)
Tear resistance (or tear strength) is a measure of how well a material can withstand the effects
of tearing. The method is sometimes described as the Baumann.
16. Purposes of testing………
COLOR FASTNESS TO LIGHT with Lifa 400 (300W Special sunlight lamp with 95 lumen)
STANDARD METHOD : ASTM D1148
To determine the resistance of color of leather of all kinds at all stages of processing to the
action of an artificial light source (Xenon Lamp)
FLEX ENDURANCE
STANDARD METHOD : SLP-14 (IUP/20; BS-3144-Method -13)
Flexing Tester is used to test the flexing-resistance of leather for production of vamp, clothing
materials, or bags. ... The Leather Flexing test is conducted till the piece of leather cracks. The
time taken is recorded for flexing-resistance.
BALL BURST TEST
STANDARD METHOD : IUP-9; BS 3144- METHOD 8
To measure the strength, resistance and extensibility under multidirectional strain. With the aim
of checking its resistance to bursting during shoe lasting process.
17. Purposes of testing………
SHRINKAGE TEMPERATURE (Ts)
STANDARD METHOD : SLP 18 (IUP/16: BS 3144; method 17)
Shrinkage temperature is characteristic of the tannage of the leather. The higher the shrinkage
temperature, the better the moist heat resistance of the leather.
BOIL TEST
STANDARD METHOD : ASTM D7477 – 16
Determining the Area Stability of Wet Blue Submersed in Boiling Water:
pH of LEATHER EXTRACT.
STANDARD METHOD : IUC-11/; DIN EN ISO 4045
To measure the acidity or alkalinity of leather extract as Highly acidic or alkaline leather may
cause skin allergy reaction.
MEASER TEST (Dynamic water absorption )
STANDARD METHOD : ASTM D 2099
Test specimens are flexed in a dilute solution of common salt . The number of flexes endured
by the leather at the point at which the water penetrates are counted.
18. Purposes of testing………
WATER VAPOUR PERMEABILITY
STANDARD METHOD :(IUP/15, DIN 53333)
Moisture disposal and thermal behavior (shoe climate) over a number of hours is an important
factor in shoe comfort, as are the fit of the shoes and thermal protection.
LEATHER GLOSS TEST
STANDARD METHOD :
The Gloss Tester is a precision instrument that provides a dependable means of monitoring
leather shine. ... This enables a quality system to be set-up between supplier and customer
whenever leather shine is a priority.
LEATHER SOFTNESS TEST.
STANDARD METHOD :
The Softness Tester is a precision instrument that provides a dependable means of monitoring
leather softness. ... This enables a quality system to be set-up between supplier and customer
whenever leather softness is a priority.
19. MARTINDALE TEST (Abrasion test)
STANDARD METHOD :
The Martindale is a unit for quantifying the abrasion resistance of textiles,
especially when used for upholstery.
The Martindale method, also known as the Martindale rub test, simulates
natural wear of a seat cover, in which the textile sample is rubbed against
a standard abrasive surface with a specified force. The test equipment
works in intervals of 5000 cycles, totalling the wear number (unit:
Martindale) of abrasion cycles that leads to the material being worn to a
specified degree. The higher the value, the more resistant the material is to
abrasion.
FINISH ADHESION TEST
STANDARD METHOD : SLF-11
The strength of adhesion between a coating and its base.
20. Color fastness of leather to heating
Color fastness of leather to heating such as may occur
when shoes are flamed, hot blasted,or ironed or
subjected to other shoe-making operations involving
contact with hot tools,machine parts,air ,or gases.The
test is primarily to ascertain if changes of color occur,
but other changes in appearance are also noted.
