The document provides instructions for an assignment where students are asked to:
1) Choose a topic of interest and find at least 5 pictures on Flickr representing that topic showing different parent functions.
2) Create a PowerPoint presenting the topic and identifying the parent function shape, equation, domain and range for each picture.
3) Properly cite each picture using the photographer's name, title, date and weblink according to its Creative Commons license.
4) Evaluate other students' projects to check citations meet Creative Commons requirements and the assignment meets Fair Use principles.
1. FINDING PARENT FUNCTIONS IN THE “REAL WORLD”
APPLICATIONS OF ALGEBRA 2
In this unit, we have discussed several different families of functions. We looked at the various equations that generate
and change the shape of the graph. Now, we want to see where these functions can actually be seen in the real world.
YOUR TASK
1) Choose a topic that is of interest to you.
2) Using www.flickr.com as a search resource, find pictures that represent your topic of choice. When searching for
pictures, be sure to limit your results to only those with Creative Commons License.
3) Examine those pictures for various shapes of parent functions.
4) Create a Powerpoint presentation to share your interest with the class, while demonstrating your understanding of
parent functions.
5) An example is provided at the following link:
REQUIREMENTS
1) You must use a minimum of 5 different functions.
2) You may organize your presentation however you wish, but you must include the following information for each
picture you find:
• Function shape (parabola, hyperbola, circle, cubic, exponential, square root, absolute value, or linear)
• Description of where the shape can be seen in the photo
• An exact equation for the function
• The domain and range for the function
3) You will submit, on graph paper, a sketch of your picture that shows all of your work for arriving at the equation in
your presentation.
4) Finally, you must provide documentation for your pictures, including appropriate citations where necessary. A
description of each of the potential licenses is listed below. Be sure to abide by these licenses.
a. Attribution: allows other to use work, and derivative works, if they give the owner credit
b. Share alike: distribute derivative works under identical license to the original owner
c. Noncommercial: others may use your works for noncommercial use only
d. No derivative works: other may use your work in its original form, but no derivatives are allowed
The following information must be provided in your citation:
• The photographers name (or username)
2. • Title of photo
• The date the image was uploaded
• The weblink for the image

5) You will be evaluating whether your classmates have met all of the requirements for this project. Take time to
check the citations. Did the citation meet all of the requirements designated under Creative Commons? If so,
what were the requirements? If not, what is missing?
6) Finally, does this assignment meet all the requirements for Fair Use of media? Which of the Principles of Fair Use
in Media are met? Justify your response.
