The novels we have been reading this semester have given
me a new perspective on history. The books tell different accounts
of the same time period from different perspectives. There are
many new things I have learned about the country I was born in.
When the original emigrants came to America from Europe
they hoped to find religious freedom, hope, and land. Most had only
hoped to find a way to support their families or themselves. The
Indians living in America when it was discovered hoped to learn
and gain from the new inhabitants of their land. They saw the
advantages of the American from their weapons to their goods.
Struggle and Survival gave an interesting look into the lives
of many people. For instance, Opechancanough was a strong,
brave Indiana leader. He was the successor of the great Powhatan,
2. attempt to preserve the culture of his people. Though he was not
successful he showed the true strength and dedication of the
Indians.
Journal #2 Jacob Young was a European who against the odds
embraced the Indian culture. He ran a trading post on the
Susquehannock River. He learned the the language of the
Susquehannock Indians in order to become their trusted friend and
increase trade.
In the novel American Colonies I learned about what life was
like for some of the first settlers of america. It was interesting to
learn how pirates were originally an accepted part of English trade.
Then after they began attacking Britain’s trade partners they
became a liability. Also, most of the emigrants sent over to the
Americas between 1718 and 1775 were convicted felons. This
aggravated many of the colonist. The criminals who were sent to
America were sold as slaves and even if they reached freedom
almost never were able to reach any place of social standing.

3. introduced from the original Americans changed Europe forever.
New foods were introduced such as corn, tomatoes, potatoes,
chocolate, sugar, and peanuts.
Journal #2 In conclusion of what I have taken from this class is that the
Americas was a learning experience for all involved. People risked
everything in hopes of finding true happiness and success here in
America. America is still a young country and I believe we are still
trying to establish our true identity in the world. Also, and most
importantly from this class I have learned that history does not have
to be a boring text book class. History is a story of the past that can
be told from many different view points.
