Nurse Turnover And Nurse Retention
Nurse Turnover and Nurse Retention
Stephanie Williams
NURS– 411.01 Issues and Leadership in Nursing
Delaware State University
The nursing shortage in healthcare has been a highlighted issue for many years. With the ever–growing health care system, hospitals and healthcare
facilities often find themselves searching for ways to acquire new nurses and retain their very own. Throughout the years, the number one solution to
this problem remains the same: decreasing nurse turnover, and increasing nurse retention. This paper discusses the causes of high nurse turnover rate,
the negative effects on health care, and ways to improve the turnover rate. Before we can examine the consequences of high nurse turnover, we must
examine the reasons nurses choose to leave their employer and look elsewhere for work.
According to Hunt (2009), feeling overworked is the number one cause for nurse turnover in health care settings. Other reasons at the top of the list
include, lack of support from employers and few opportunities for advancement. Due to the nursing shortage, staffing has been an issue in many
healthcare facilities. As a result, units are consistently short staffed, causing nurses to feel overworked and unsupported by management. Cline (2004)
highlighted nurse frustration when a participant in the study stated, "When you're constantly short–staffed and feel your managers aren't supporting
you at least by saying, 'Thank you, I know you must've had a hard

Nurse Anesthetist
Working in the medical field has always been a popular job, but it's not an easy one. There are many routines to uphold and if you aren't good with
organization, then working in the hospital isn't for you. I have chosen a career path to be a nurse anesthetist and this essay will tell you why.
Job characteristics for a general nurse anesthetist include: reviewing medical history, evaluating patients and their accurate method of anesthesia,
properly measuring and overseeing the level and speed of the anesthesia being administered, keeping an eye on patient's vital signs, informing the
surgeon if patient becomes unstable, attending to the patient's needs before, during and after the surgery, and checking on the patient's recovery from
the anesthesia.

Communication As A Nurse
As a current nursing student, the book Fundamentals of Nursing will enhance my career by helping me implement good communication skills and
understanding spiritual health.
Chapter 24 that discusses communication and chapter 36 that discusses spiritual health are the chapters that helped me in writing this report.
It is factual that effective communication skills and competency are needed upon achieving a profession as a nurse. Upon first greeting a patient the
distinctive level of communication is apparent. Communication has two core factors, non–verbal and verbal. Both types of communication will be
implemented on a regular basis as I interact with patients in my nursing career. It will be vital for me to attain an increased and developed ... Show more

I now understand that spirituality represents for numerous people a critical element that solidifies their belief in God. Showcasing spirituality through
common practices, via good service to others, passing on wisdom, or showing compassion, usually brings deep intimate satisfactions. From my
reading and comprehension, as I will concentrate on creating a secure, wholesome and warm environment for the patients in my care. I understand that
the nurses' function is to feel and capture the imbalance that is present, and to get rid of the barricades in the patients' recovery process. Spiritual care
should be a positive and delicate approach, on the basis of trust and a terrific comfortable relationship between the patient and nurse in an effort to
deliver quality care.
Holistic care focuses on the emotional, physical, economic, social and spiritual needs of individual people. Patient care has an important goal which is
obtaining and maintaining the equality between mind, body and environment, as this balance is important for a fulfilling life.
In closing, this textbook has fundamentally taught me that Nurses play an important role in the health care profession helping and caring for individuals,
or whole families and it has many important elements which are needed to ensure a great quality of

Nurse Mentor Interview : Nurses
Nurse Mentor Interview Throughout this clinical semester, I have worked with several different registered nurses (RNs) and have been able to develop
mentoring relationships with many of the staff on the unit. During our time together, I interviewed several of my nurse mentors and elicited
information regarding their nursing experiences and the culture of the environment in which they work. The following conversations provide a
summarization of my nurse mentors' responses to the selected interview questions.
What was your experience of transition into practice from the role of a student to that of a RN and what advice does you have? The first year working
as a RN was especially difficult. I started out on a medical–surgical unit with an oncology focus. I felt overwhelmed much of the time, but thankfully I
was surrounded by experienced nurses. All of my coworkers on that unit had at least eight years of experience and so I was able to go to them for
advice and guidance regarding the issues with which I was struggling. My advice to new nurses is to know their resources and ask the experienced
nurses on the floor for help.
How do you deal with new nurses of a different generation? I would not say that I have had too much difficulty in dealing with the younger
generation of nurses. As long as people are willing to learn and work hard, I will have no problem working with them.
Who is your role model and why? My role model is one of the nursing instructors I had in nursing

Nurse History
Nurses is an essential job in the healthcare world. Through the nursing assistants to practical nurses to listed nurses, the field of nursing has many
functions that play an important part in patient attention. If you're a caring person who enjoys supporting others, then a nurses program could be
a great option for you. To celebrate nurses and all they actually, we're offering four fun facts about the history of nurses. 1. The first nursing jobs
school opened in the year 250 BCE The earliest recorded great medical distinguishes their roles as midwives and wet rns. One of the first
historically recorded nursing colleges was established in India in 250 B. C. E. In that time period, the Buddhist Native american indian ruler,
Ashoka, ordered clinics to be built along the key travelling routes. These kinds of hospitals were supplied with nurses and medicines to help the sick
and weary. 2. Nursing hats are designed from nuns' habits The original medical cap is designed after a nun's habit. Strict organizations often provided
training to nuns, who served as the first organizations of organized nurses in medieval Europe. This type of headdress was worn to show that they
worked in the service of caring for the sick. The head masking was more... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Evolution Of Nurses Over Time Nurse
Nurses have gone through a significant evolution over time. Nurses work in many setting such as hospitals and homes. Some nurses are even
stationed in foreign countries around the globe. In the past, they took care of revolutionary soldiers. "Where the brave soldiers went, the nurses
followed," (A history of care). In world war one and two they were put at risk for disease, and capture (A history of care). Over time nurses have had
had to enter many disastrous scenes to aid in care. For example, Clara Maass died in 1901 for volunteering for experiments to control yellow fever (A
history of care). Over time nurses have made many contributions to this world to make it a better place.
Florence Nightingale began her nursing career in the Crimean

Nurse Vs. Behavioral Health Nurse
The best part of your decision was not only did you protect your license; you also protected the nurse's license that made the suggestion. In addition,
you found an alternative method to help better distribute the patient assignments and achieve the desired goal. The justification for working out of our
scope of practice can be as simple as you said feeling "complimented", but does not consider safety risk if something goes wrong. Another common
hospital practice that places nurses in similar jeopardy is being pulled to a nursing unit deemed comparable. As behavioral health nurses (adult unit), we
are required to cover our child and adolescent psychiatric unit (CAPU) when their below their staffing needs. Though all behavioral units have

A Interview With A Nurse
When was the last time you were in the hospital or a loved one was in the hospital, and ever wondered where the nurse is, and they haven 't returned
for hours. You finally push the assistance button several times, and they open the door and hurriedly say, "I will be right back", then you don 't see
them for a while again. When they come back to check up on you, you explain to them what you need, and then they send in a less qualified staff
member to assist you. At this point, you become very annoyed and frustrated not to mention scared to be admitted in the hospital to begin with. Little do
you know, your nurse has ten other patients and other non–nursing tasks that they are responsible taking care of. They have been working a double
shift and are extremely exhausted, and a large stack of charts that they will have to do before their shift is over. As a patient, you now become
frustrated and are not happy about this; as a nurse, they are just as frustrated as you are, not only because the amount of work they have but more
importantly they can 't deliver the appropriate care they long to give. For most hospitals they do not hire enough registered nurses for reasons that are
good and bad. This is an issue that needs to be addressed not only locally but nationally and on a constant basis. When there are too many patients for
one registered nurse to attend to, nurses become exhausted, mistakes are made, and patients are unsatisfied. A minimum nurse to patient ratio needs to

Professional Nurse And A Baccalaureate Nurse
In the nursing world today, the type of degree a nurse holds is usually not something others pay attention to. The main focus is teamwork and providing
the safest, timeliest, and best quality care for the patients. It is becoming increasingly clear that maintaining and improving the health of the population
requires team–based care (Landman, Aannestad, Smoldt, & Cortese 2014). While nurses provide care for patients, it is difficult to differentiate between
an associate degree nurse and a baccalaureate degree nurse. I have always found it easier to tell the new, less experienced nurses from the more
experienced nurse that has been practicing for years. After starting the RN–BSN, I have now been able to see the differences that will affect ... Show

The baccalaureate degree includes populations and communities in this collaboration. (Texas Board of Nursing, 2011). When reflecting back on the
RN–BSN program and the all the research and papers I did on evidence–based practice, I now understand why. I now know the differences in an
associate degree nurse and a baccalaureate degree nurse, and the competencies of both. As I pursued my associate degree, I was taught the
fundamental basics of nursing, including developing care plans and performing everyday nursing skills to take care of patients. The main differences I
have noticed while completing my bachelor degree is the importance of research, leadership, and public health. A baccalaureate degree nurse is better
educated when it comes to stressful situations, and able to make quick, spur of the moment decisions to help keep patients safe. I felt that each course
in the RN–BSN program helped me to understand the importance of research for that particular course. I believe I will take what I learned while
researching for specific topics with me, as I provide patient centered care as a baccalaureate prepared nurse. All the courses in the RN–BSN program
emphasized patient safety and providing patient–centered care for not only the patient and families, but the community too. These are learning
outcomes that are the basis of everyday nursing

Interaction With Nurses
Interaction with and teaching of patients is a core duty of nurses (Whitman, 2015). During their initial training, nursing students must be taught how to
communicate with and teach patients; however, most nursing curriculums do not explicitly instruct nursing students in andragogy theories and
teaching techniques. Instead, many nursing curriculums rely on the model of the nursing instructor and clinical experiences to teach these elements,
such as nursing professionalism and patient education (Azadi et al., 2017). To complicate matters, once they achieve their nursing license, nurses are
expected to competently interact with and care for patients from a variety of backgrounds including those who have special needs or come from
vulnerable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nurses are expected to provide advocacy for populations by embracing diversity (Koch et al., 2014). One population which nurses will encounter is the
mental health community; however, many nurses may hold fear or negative attitudes toward this community due to personal experiences or a lack of
instruction on how to interact with this population (Clement et al., 2015). Many nurses, nursing faculty, and nursing students may hold fear, negative
attitudes, or aversion toward mental illness which frames their experiences; thus, perpetuating the fear of mental illness and negatively impacting the
mental health nursing experience (Kashihara, 2015). Because nurses must be an advocate for their patients, regardless of mental health status, it is
vitally important that nursing students are taught explicitly how to interact with and teach patients from the mental health community. The proposed
research topic is to explore how explicit and focused education of student nurses on how to interact with and teach vulnerable populations, such as the
mental health community, will affect their patient education competency and their attitudes toward these

Nurse Staffing
Running head: NURSE STAFFING
Nurse Staffing: Does One Size Fit All?
Iva Roach
Abstract
Two major forms of staffing guidelines will be discussed, nurse–to–patient ratio and staffing by acuity. This paper will discuss the history of each
staffing form. It will point out the benefits and negative features of both practices, describe how hospitals deal with staffing and discuss the states that
have laws requiring certain guidelines be followed.

Their acuity score is much lower than a patient in the intensive care unit or a step–down unit. Healthcare systems that utilize staffing by acuity are
looking at the safe number of certain levels of patients that one nurse can care for. The down side to staffing by acuity is that many feel
administration will influence numbers to maintain a high number of patients per nurse. If all patients on a unit were a level eight then most acuity
systems would call for three patients to one nurse but if all patients on a unit were all level ones then a nurse could be caring for as many as eight to
ten patients. Acuity does not take every patient encounter into consideration. For instance a dementia patient may have a low acuity based on the
nursing care since they usually do not have indwelling lines or invasive procedures. Although the same patient may require a high amount help with
activities of daily living, decision making and education. (Walsh, 2003) Thus staffing by acuity can be a subjective form of nurse staffing. When done
accurately, acuity based staffing can be very beneficial for the nursing staff. Illinois is one of many states that have implemented laws requiring
hospitals to base staffing on acuity systems and then report compliance on a quarterly basis. Illinois Hospital Association supports acuity based staffing
over nurse–to–patient ratios. (Anonymous. 2008)

Nurse Practitioners : A Nurse Practitioner
Nurse Practitioner
When somebody needs to go to the doctor now a days, they might not necessarily see one, it most likely would be a nurse practitioner. They do the
same job as a physician more or less but are a little different in other words, they are less expensive & they are more hands on, so to speak, being
more one on one with the patient & their needs or wants in dealing with illnesses, broken bones, diseases, common cold, or loss of loved ones. They
go further than a normal physician would. Today, there are over 205,000nurse practitioners in the united states today (American Association of Nurse
Practitioners).
The first nurse was formed during the Christian era and their education was passed on orally from generation to generation, they didn't have to go
to a school or have to spend so many hours at a clinic. Females or infants born with the placenta covering their face were meant to be a nurse or
were to work in the medical field. The ideal nurse was to be selfless, helpful, and sacrificed themselves for others they never put themselves first.
Nurse care was done inside homes unless you had no family in the area then you would take them to the nearest hospital, the first hospital was
established by a woman named Fabiola. During the early years of modern Europe nurses fought with their patients, stole and lied to them, came to work
drunk, and used foul language around their patients while working. During this time they only worked for a few hours then they

Role of the Nurses Overview The interview I conducted was based on the importance of the nurses in the exercise of ensuring quality in the delivery

Mr. Humphrey agrees since nurses are caregivers; this implies that they are the ones in charge of taking care of the patients through providing them
with food, administering drugs to them, and even ensuring that the hygiene of the patients is maintained at all time. Apart from being caregivers, they
also make decisions pertaining the patients. In doing so, the nurses will determine the measures that should be taken to improve the patients' health in
case it is on the decline. This is a vital role as it is upon this that the patients' recovery is determined. Moreover; nurses are also in charge of making
communications with the patient and even their family members (Institute of Medicine (US), 2011). This aspect greatly determines the direction of the
treatment as the opinion of the family members is not only integral but also vital in some instances. The hospital can avoid being put into an awkward
position if the nurses communicate effectively with their

Becoming A Nurse
The effect of working and studying to become a nurse at the same time is very intimidating. There is some truth to it, making money while working

working the same time as schooling, will give us the opportunity to develop and improve my management skills since I will be working and attending
school simultaneously. It may seem like a challenge, and some advantages so many people try it but sometimes failed due to health problems, lack of

Presented in the nursing study, Nursing activities, nurse staffing and adverse patient outcomes as perceived by hospital nurses, the research gives
evidence that indicates nurse staffing levels can have direct effect on patient care. Therefore, in correlation to the question and point of study, the
research pointed at the fact that inadequate staffing and unrealistic workloads place an burden on nursing staff, reducing the quality of care that nurses
are able to provide. The patient–to–nurse ratio averaged 8.74:1 overall within the nurses involved in the study. The study took RNs' evaluations of

Unlike the first article discussed, this study was created to consider the patients point of view. The study considers unit organizational factors (e.g.
nurse–to–bed ratio, skill mix) with patient access to support. Data analysis and results show staffing levels showed a positive association with patient
access to support. On the other hand, the availability of support deteriorated when the number of emergency inpatients and the unit workload
increased. Patients' perceived access to support was also associated with the number of hours worked by Registered Nurses on the inpatient unit; the
higher the proportion of hours worked by Registered Nurses, the higher the score for perceived access to support on the dimensions of respectful
interaction and access to information. Furthermore, nurses' mean professional experience correlated positively with patient access to support: the
longer this experience, the more patients felt they had access to support in their care. Nonetheless the data shows patients do sense it when staffs are

Generation Of Nurses
The differences between men and women in the unit that I work in is more by age than by grouped by sex. The older generation of nurses seems to
work more independently then be younger generations. The older nurses are more solitary and do not embrace team nursing. The younger generation
nurses tend to work as team members and have a group belonging mentality. They patients are the unit's patients and everyone has to work together. The
older nurses own their patients, and no one should touch them.
The older nurses are considered from the "Baby Boomer" generation and are typically in the fifties and sixties (Borkowski, 2011 p. 39). These nurses
tend to be long term employees who stay with tradition and have a hard working attitude (Borkowski, 2011). The younger nurses would be in the
"Generation X and Millennial" age grouping, who tend to be less formal and have a more casual relationship with their employer (Borkowski, 2011, P.
39). The different generations present unique management challenges when handling the group's needs.
The additional difference is that the older generation of nurses is there for longevity celebrating 20 and 30 years with the hospital. The newer
generation nurses are beefing up their resumes and are leaving on a monthly basis. The younger generation is always looking for the next experience, the

Nurse Malpractice
The nursing profession is very challenging and demanding. As a nurse, you must be dedicated, reliable and trustworthy. When a nurse enters into a
critical care unit there is more responsibility placed on him or her. It is the job of the nurse to uphold professional competence. Failure to do so may
result in malpractice. According to Finkelman and Kenner (2016) "malpractice is an act or continuing conduct of a professional that does not meet the
standard of professional competence and results in provable damages to the patient" (p. 185). In order to have a successful lawsuit filed, there are four
criteria that must be met. First, there must have been a nurse–patient relationship, where the nurse provided care. Second, the nurse ... Show more

Nurse Engagement
This study is grounded on Shaufeli et al. (2002) work engagement theoretical concepts (vigor, dedication, and absorption) whereby,
Vigor is characterized by high levels of energy and mental resilience while working. Dedication refers to being strongly involved in one's work and
experiencing a sense of significance, enthusiasm, and challenge. Absorption is characterized by being fully concentrated and happily engrossed in
one's work, whereby time passes quickly and one has difficulties with detaching oneself from work. (as cited in Bakker & Demerouti, 2008, p. 209–210)
This concept theory has been used in different nursing disciplines to evaluate the level of nurse engagement. It was assumed that nurses' level of
engagement was related to the three components of work engagement which can be influenced by the work environment (Antoinne Bargagliotti, 2012).

Hence, the JD–R model theory can not only be used into the nursing ward, but in all work environment because of its flexibility validating its

evaluations include and are not limited to optimism, self–efficacy, resilience, and self–esteem (Bakker et al., 2014; Bakker & Demerouti, 2008). The

Registered Nurse
A nurse is a profession in the healthcare field. There are many different kinds of jobs that you can be in the nursing field which includes, OPN
nurses, OB/GYN nurses, registered nurses, nurse midwife, and much more. The type of nursing career I decided to research is an OB/GYN nurse.
OB/GYN is used as an abbreviation for the actual name of this career. The "OB" is short for obstetrics or for an obstetrician, which is a physician
who specializes in delivering babies. "GYN" is short for gynecology or for gynecologist, which is a physician who specializes in treating diseases
which develop in the female reproductive system. Therefore an Obstetrics/Gynecology, OB/GYN,nurse is a type of nurse who helps deliver babies and
which also helps treat ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The worst thing that an OB nurse goes through is that she sees how the pregnant women does not take care of herself or of the baby. "Worst is
having a patient that is non compliant and that doesn't want to take care of them or baby, she doesn't try. Yet I see other women who really want a
baby and care for themselves but they can't have babies. Apart from this, I really love my job". Women who don't take care of themselves usually
do not follow up with what the nurses or the doctor tells her to do, or she just does not go to the appointment she has. Usually women who don't
take care of themselves don't really care about the baby, which is why it is really hard on the nurse. Another thing that they said is a downfall in
their job is that they experience emotions with patients who lose their baby. Pregnancy loss is something they see a lot. Many patients really want
and try to be parents, but when they lose a baby, they get really emotional and as nurses they need to know how to handle and say the right words.
When patients miscarry, loose their baby, patients have a lot of questions and as nurses they have to know how to answer and respond to them. Thats
why they they do not like seeing patients that do not take care of themselves because parents that really want a baby can not have one. Even as nurses,
you can see that they do have trouble in their work and they experience

Even in management, critical thinking is essential to having an effective organization. "Nurse managers who are adept at using critical thinking and
have the "habits of mind" of a critical thinker are in a good position to assume a leadership role and create the changes that will achieve positive
outcomes in health care organizations" (Zori, & Morrison, 2009 p.79).

thinking skills. Nurses with higher degrees should be put in management positions. Nurse Residency and other things that help with nurse retention

Nurses are the largest number of employees at healthcare organizations. Nurses are what make the hospital able to achieve organizational effectiveness.
Hospitals need to maintain and respect the value of their nurses. Without the nurses hospitals would not exist in all the capabilities that they are
achieving today. Nurses are the heart and soul of the hospital. Healthcare institutions need to make their place of work attractive to nurses. There will
continue to be a shortage of nurses and the success of the healthcare facility depend upon the ability to have the right amount of nurses working at the
facility. In order to make the business attractive the facility must offer benefits such as healthcare, insurance, and tuition reimbursement.
They must make the nurses happy who work there by finding out what they want such as a certain amount of pay, holidays off, and not working

organization have. Plus working different shifts is not good on the body of the individuals working the shift. If you have the right amount of

The Death Of A Nurse
The Josie King story is truly unimaginable. I wish I could review her chart to better understand how she fell through the cracks. It seems hard to
believe that the signs of increasing dehydration went unnoticed or even worse, were viewed as 'normal'. Even more difficult to believe is that the
nurses were unable to create a partnership with the mother. In the story, it seems as if the mom was dismissed as a partner in the process and felt as if
no one was listening to her. Although a family member may not have the medical knowledge anurse has, they have knowledge of their child and that
is lost without their help. What would have happened if the nurse spent a moment to understand where Josie's mother was coming from or called
the doctor to communicate her symptoms? Did she truly believe her symptoms were normal or was she too busy with something else? It shouldn't
be possible to have a child be NPO without IV fluids running. While it takes children a long time to stop compensating, I'm sure there were signs of
dehydration. During a bath, the mom notes how furiously Josie was sucking on a wet washcloth. If it was known that she was not drinking, how
could these signs have been missed? It seems as though a total breakdown in obvious behavior and team communication is evident. The care delivery
model failed to keep Josie safe. The nurse or team assigned seemed to lack knowledge of symptoms and the skill sets present did not work to make up
for another team members deficits.

Pediatric Nurses
Nurses who specialize in pediatrics devote their knowledge and skills to caring for children. Pediatrics is a special field because these nurses get to
work with children everyday . The amazing thing about children is that they recover and heal faster than adults. There's small and big miracles that
happen everyday in pediatrics and having a job that gets to be apart of everyday miracles is miraculous. Building long term relationships with patients
and their families can make nurses feel like small heroes.
Pediatric nurses have lots of skills they have to obtain such as focus on medical needs and treatments for infants, children and adolescents. When in the
medical field you need to have critical thinking skills when in hard situations. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These Nurses spend most of their days interacting with children and families. On a daily basis, they need to be prepared to take care of emotional and

that provides critical children with the highest level of medical care (registered). The PICU allows intensive nursing care and continuous

The Unpreparedness Of Nurses
The article by Sylvia Baack and Danita Alfred attempted in earnest to determine the preparedness of nurses to manage disaster situations. The research
was based on an online study on nurses by asking them to fill out questionnaires that would then determine how they felt about disaster situations and
how best to handle them (Baack & Alfred, 2013). The use of the 620 nurses was prudent as it provided a significant sample space to handle the
possibility of bias. The scope of the research was however limited to the Texas state of America. This meant that the responses given represented the
general feeling among southern states as Texas is among the southern part of the country. Nevertheless, given that no information was sought about
where these nurses were trained, it is arguable that their vocational training could have been distributed among all states in the nation or fairly among a
majority of the states.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, if the persons filling the questionnaires were not the nurses themselves; this would greatly affect the integrity of the data collected.
However, the large scope again makes up for this weakness since a good number of respondents would give the honest and discrete information
required. The findings indicated that a good number of nurses are not confident with the way they handle disaster situations. This is a common opinion
among health professionals since many nurses according to Veenema (2012) are often unprepared for emergencies. This is because they do not
anticipate the magnitude of some of the occurrences they experience. The research was thus a success and indeed proved the hypothesis on nurse
preparedness to disaster

Nurse Delegation
Under the regulations of the California Nurse Practice Act, a Licensed Vocational Nurse has the ability to delegate tasks to unlicensed assisted
personnel (UAP) according to individual facility policy. Delegation as stated in Hill & Howlett is defined as, "transferring the authority to perform
nursing duties that are in the job description of the LVN chargenurse." Prior to carrying out this important nursing duty, it is important for the LVN to
recognize the difference between assigning tasks and delegating tasks. As explained in an article in the Journal of Nursing regulation titled; National
Guidelines for Nursing Delegation. Assigning tasks would involve performing "routine care, activities, and procedures that are within the authorized
scope or practice of the LVN or part of the routine functions of the UAP. Delegating tasks on the other hand is defined as "allowing a delegate to

Providing care to clients is more complex than just providing care. It requires the use of the nursing process, knowledge in what to do with that
process as well as being able to adapt and comply with the continuous changes in rules, regulations and standards of care in health care. If all of those
factors are not enough, let us not forget about the changes in the evolving nursing workforce. Many factors will influence the ability to comply with
all regulations and standards. As stated in the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis report from December 2014. Some factors include:
"population growth, aging of the population, overall economic conditions, aging of the nursing workforce, and changes in health care reimbursement.
Therefore, delegation should be used as a tool in helping the licensed nurse, as it plays a vital role in being able to provide appropriate nursing care to

Registered Nurses
Introduction In this era of globalization, medical profession has become an important profession. People have become aware of their medical rights.
With this, the burden of hospitals and nurses have increased. A number of research has been done on the conditions of nurses in hospitals. One of the
issues for hospitals is to keep the motivation level of nurses high. It has been observed that the attrition rate of nurses has been high. This paper would
discuss a research on these issues. The research is a qualitative research that was conducted by Carol Isaac MacKusick and Ptlene Minick in 2010. The
title of the research is, "Why Are Nurses Leaving? Findings from an Initial Qualitative Study on Nursing Attrition". Source: https://www.amsn.org/sites

Most of the nurses mentioned that the emotional connect with patients and interaction with their family members is the most positive thing and
nurses regret this interaction. However, nurses quit their job due to three major reasons. These are: Unfriendly workplace: This was one of the
most important factors for which nurses leave their job. The Hospitals are not able to create a friendly environment for nurses and nurses feel lot of
pressure and burden. As a result, nurses would leave the job. Emotional distress: The nursing profession is not an easy profession. There would be lot
of emotional and mental distress in this profession. Some of the nurses are not able to take this emotional distress and as result, they would leave the
job. Fatigue and exhaustion: The nursing profession required great level of commitment and dedication from nurses. These nurses have to work in

Role Of Nurse Leader And Nurse Manager
Role of Nurse Leader and Nurse Manager in Nursing Shortage and Turn–over
During the recent years, the American Healthcare system is struggling with the issue of the nursing shortage and turnover. There are many rationales
and reasons for this issue and the writer will discuss some of them in this paper. Nursing shortage and turnover remarkably influenced on the provision
of the services by the health care provider, the financial burden on the healthcare facility and also a stressful working environment for the nurses. Also,
the writer will discuss and evaluate this issue by evaluating numerous leadership and management theories and their roles. In addition to it, will also
share a personal and professional philosophy of nursing associated with this issue.
Major reasons for nursing shortage and turn–over
A report, published by United State General Accounting Office mentioned that the health care system and a long–term system heavily depend on the
nursing services. It also mentioned that the extreme shortage of nurses is expected in the near future because of the baby–boomers are reaching the age
of 60's and 70's (GAO, 2001) and due to their age–related complications, they need more assistance for hospitals, long–term services, and home health
care. On the contrary, The National Council of State Boards of Nursing indicated that 55% of the Registered Nurse workforce are around the age of 50
and older. Also, the Health Resource and Services Administration predicts that 1,000,000

Nurse Retention
Do you agree with the identified problem?
Yes, I agree that the there is an issue in regards to orientation process and the relationship it has on staff retention within our unit.
I believe that a lack of proper orientation can have a tremendous impact of nurse retention rates. With improper orientation the entire unit suffers. It
correlates with a decrease in the quality of care, patient safety and satisfaction, as well as nurse confidence. Having all staff trained in an extensive and
consistent orientation program brings about better continuity and higher quality of care, as well as an increase in positive patient outcomes. The lack
of an extensive and consistent orientation program leads to a deficit in critical thinking skills and clinical knowledge. When a nurse is not fully
prepared for her role within a unit, it directly translates into patient care practices. I believe it also leads to a decrease in staff satisfaction– for the new
nurse as well as the seasoned nurses within the unit. This frustration can lead to burnout and ultimately a high turnover rate of nurses.
Suggestions for improving the problem: A consistent and extensive orientation program for new nurses.
A consistent and extensive educational orientation program should cover all topics needed for successful transition into the nurse's new role within the
unit. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Effective orientation programs skillfully transition the new nurse, or the nurse that is new to the specialty, to their new role. There is no question that
an effective program increases job satisfaction and reduces RN turnover rate. Establishing and maintaining a successful, consistent, and extensive

Nurse To Nurse Patient Ratio
I can bear witness to all the different circumstances that qualify one to one nurse patient ratio. At times, due to staffing and patient acuity the nurse
patient ratio cannot be helped. Nurse to patient ratio is a problem in the workplace especially in the critical care setting that requires managers and
leaders to intervene. To eliminate this problem as stated by McKenna et al. (2011)nurse managers are working together with other staff members in
forming a committee called the Nursing Productivity Committee (NPC), which helps to implement safe staffing strategies to ensure best possible
patient outcome and improve nurse satisfaction. The NPC, as stated by McKenna et al., found that nurse patient ratio in the intensive care unit (ICU)

Nurses As A Nurse Healer
In Universities, nurses are taught to provide safe, quality nursing care to their patients.
While providing safe care, nurses are also taught to be an advocate for their patients. To be an advocate for patients, nurses must take on the role of
being a Nurse Healer. Nurse Healer is defined as a nurse who assist the patients to stay in a state of homeostasis (human body in a state of physical
and psychological balance). Dossey and others have observed that "nurses as healers" use their own energies and interpersonal caring to facilitate
growth and the process toward wholeness of body, mind and spirit, as well as assist people in recovery from illness or in the transition to death". ()

Self– care is also needed to increase quality care that patient will receive.
Nurses who do not take care of themselves may be too tired physically and mentally to provide adequate care to their patients.
To be a nurse healer, a nurse must take care of their physical and psychological well being. The nurse should get regular physical exams with routine
blood test. The nurse should also have exercise regime that will fit into her busy schedule. It can be taking a walk in the park, breathing exercises or
dancing to music. Healthy eating habits are also essential components for nurse healers. Eating foods with fruits and vegetables can increase nurses
energy levels to assist them with their rigorous work schedule. The nurse also need to integrate mindful practice and self–reflections on her life and
take time for herself such as, writing a journal, listening to music, prayer or other enjoying activity. When a nurse can take care of her physical and
psychological wellbeing it will promote self–quality care and compassion.
Compassion is an important component of providing excellent care and helps with the healing process. Compassion allows the patient to feel at ease to
communicate with the nurse by feeling that there questions will be answered without difficulty. Compassion in nursing can be shown in a variety of
ways, such as taking the time to talk to patients or addressing their concerns. This allows the patient to be

Baccalaureate Nurse
Some people think a nurse is a doctor's assistant or even someone who gives injections. However, healthcare system has been changing over the last
few decades, which has caused nurses' roles to change and expand. The needs of patient care require a holistic approach, therefore challenging and
requiring the profession to have a broad nature of discipline. In order to offer that specialized service to society, thenurse is required to obtain a
bachelor's degree and keep learning throughout his or her career. For that reason, this paper will discuss three major roles of baccalaureate nurse as
defined by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.
As mentioned above, the needs of patient care require shifting tasks from the physician to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(AACN, 2008) When talking about representing a profession, nurses are wearing a professional image. That professional image brings individuals who
are sick and unable to act as they might, to rely on those professionals to act on their behalf. Nurses need to exhibit their confidence and integrity as
expected by the patients they care for. It is the nurse's responsibility to support patient's decisions, protect their rights and stand up for their best
interests. As highly skilled advocates, nurses require strong critical reasoning and judgment, communication skills and ethical knowledge. Therefore,
nurses are committed to lifelong learning.
Nursing professionals help individuals, families, and communities to attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life. The needs of patient
care have evolved together with the healthcare system for a few decades, setting higher standards and delegating more roles for nursing professionals.
Nurses, especially those with a bachelor's degree, should always maintain continued education and teach other healthcare professionals as well. This is
to equip them with the tools required to deliver a holistic patient

Nurses with Addiction
Nursing is one of the most stressful careers in healthcare. Long hours of direct patient care take its toll emotionally and physically. While the
profession is rewarding for most, the constant stress can become a catalyst for all kinds of self damaging behaviors. The American Nurses'
Association estimates between ten and twenty percent of nurses will abuse drugs within the workplace at some point during his/her career (ANA,
2002). This percentage is similar to that of substance abusers within the general population. Due to the ease of access to narcotics on the job, it can be
difficult to recognize a problem in the early stages. Only once the nurse's activities have been suspected due to medication shortage or job performance

As a professional, you are required to deal with situations outside of your beliefs and find avenues to vent your frustration, grief and stress without
harming the patients, yourself, or the relationship between the two. I have not come across any colleagues that take a different ethical viewpoint than
me regarding this situation. We all know that stealing medications from patients for personal use is wrong professional ly, personally and legally.
Perhaps our lack of understanding is due to the inability to relate to those with drug addiction.
All coworkers within an organization need to be educated to recognize potential issues of narcotic abuse within the workplace. Since healthcare
professionals are able to hide some signs of abuse such as work absences, it may be more difficult to recognize a problem in the early stages. Some
physical signs to be aware of include: irritability, forgetfulness, isolation, and decreased levels of motivation. Issues in personal life may also increase
the chances of drug abuse, such as: stress, family problems, a previous history of mental illness, and a history of prior abuse (any type). Potential
issues must be reported to the Nurse Manager as soon as possible. In order for the organization to protect the safety of its personnel and patients, ethical
standards of practice must been routinely stressed within the workplace. Many

Nurse Competency
Practice problems are those that affects care, need a solution, and would make a difference when gets improved (Assisting Nurses with Practice
Problems). Every workplace has one or other practice problems that are current (Current Issues and Topics, n.d.). In my workplace, one of the major
problems is the varying competency levels of nurses. The purpose of this paper is to establish that varying levels of nurse competency is a current
practice problem.
Identification of a practice problem

During the orientation period and after, she used to miss medications, charted incorrect etc. This required other nurses to do her work too. The general
levels of competency of nurses of my workplace range from level competent to the expert. Based off of my statistics, thirty–three percent of the nurses I
oriented were incompetent nurses. Hiring these nurses might be an easy way for the employer to solve staffing shortage. But it raises another problem.
No institution has time to train one–third of their staff, still tend to their patients when there is a staffing shortage. Neither the patients nor the existing
nurses deserve such a jeopardizing situation. Even though to achieve competence, there needs to be an individualized time frame (Carraccio, Benson,
Nixon, & Derstine, 2008), the competence level requires nurses to have at least two to three years of experience. This help them plan ahead and work
efficiently (PeГ±a, 2015). What everyone expects from the newcomers is having theoretical knowledge and just lacking experience. Thirty–three
percent of what we get are people with almost no theoretical or practical knowledge or experience (Carraccio, et al.2008). Every nurse has different
levels of competency depending on their level of education and experience. When someone lacking both requirements enters the workforce, the training
time used slows the workforce till the new nurse reaches the required

Nurse As An Ideal Nurse
There must be a professional relationship between nurses and patients which must encompass trustworthiness, empathy and cooperation among them.
According to (Severinsson, 2003), the goal of ideal nurse can be achieved by the nurses by developing professional relationship with the care
receivers. In achieving this model the nurses had to fulfill the health related demands of patients related to biological and psychosocial aspects of
health. Patients have high expectation from the nurses, it has been considered as a tool of early treatment and recovery of the patients when the nurses
performed ideal nursing. The cooperative attitude of nurses towards their patients makes them feel comfortable and get recovered in a short time
(AM., 1998). Many women joining nursing as a profession considered it a social profession in which meeting new people and fulfilling their needs
regarding health is compulsory. In this nursing profession it is very important to have strong bond of relationship with the... Show more content on

The Nurse Provider's Role As A Nurse Assistant
As healthcare providers, our role is to ensure the safety well–being of our patients and advocate appropriately with their best interest in mind. While it
is important to be our patient's advocate, we must also stay within the parameters that are set by our state governing boards. Although the 15 y/o is a
runaway, it is more important that we assess the well–being of the teen mom, her infant, and maintain a trusting patient–provider relationship. I would
ask the Nurse Manager to room the patient and baby, and keep others out of the room until after I perform a full physical on both of them. The time in
the exam room will allow for further investigation of the current situation.

Every time I had a caring moment with a patient it was not always a positive outcome. With some patients when we try to hold their hand or take
care of them or give them the encouragement or support that they're looking and it backfires. The patient becomes upset defensive and has a belief
that you are not addressing their needs as quickly or as appropriately as they would like. When walking into a patient's units in pain and you put
your hand on their hand the offer some support turns into the patient wondering why you're there and why can't they have anything more for pain
and so on. When dealing with the public especially in healthcare you must always remember that the patient is the customer. When we are taking
care of the customer that we must do it as respect fully and as efficiently as possible. The patient needs to feel that they are feeling as if they are the
only one that matter. Usually when creating the caring moment, the patient is very receptive to words of encouragement. Talking to them and caring
for them holding their hand or looking at them and giving them a smile and nod showing that we are aware and do care. As nurses we must always

First let's emphasize that the eight competencies are integral to learning and education. It can be said that one builds on the other. As a bedside nurse
for so many years I am propelled towards the second competency the "Facilitate learner development and socialization" (Billings & Halstead, 2016, p.
10). According to the National League for Nursing (NLN), competency II is geared towards the educator's obligation to cultivate students or nurses
(National League for Nursing., n.d.). As an educator one has to be able to reach and educate at the level of the student or nurse. For example, one cannot
teach a family or patient using medical jargon that they will not understand and vice versa for a student or nurse. One has to address the

Communication Between Nurses And Nurses Essay
The hand over process of communication between nurses to nurses is done with the intention of transferring essential information for safe, and patient
centered care. Traditionally, this shift report has been done away from the patient's bedside, at the nurse's station, or other place like staff's room. In
addition, the shift report used to be delivered through audio recording of the patient's information. These reporting mechanisms did not include
face–to–face reporting of the patient information, nor involvement of patient. Therefore, information regarding the patient's care was not shared with
the patient, leaving them out of his/her own care plan. Recent studies and development of Patient Centered Care Philosophy have challenged this belief
of giving a report away from the patient. Tan (2015) said, "Shift report must not only be restricted in nurse to nurse communication, but it must involve
patients as the recipients of care" (p. 1). Incorporating the patient into the end of shift report is essential for providing patient centered care and patient
satisfaction. Nurses at the St Jude Medical center in the acute in–patient rehabilitation unit are not exceptional. Most of the end of the shift report
between nurses are still done away from the patient. Aim of this paper is to make a change in the work place, which is the process of giving end of
shift report at the bedside incorporating patient and families in the acute in–patient rehabilitation unit at St Jude Medical

Nurse Turnover And Nurse Retention

  • 1. Nurse Turnover And Nurse Retention Nurse Turnover and Nurse Retention Stephanie Williams NURS– 411.01 Issues and Leadership in Nursing Delaware State University The nursing shortage in healthcare has been a highlighted issue for many years. With the ever–growing health care system, hospitals and healthcare facilities often find themselves searching for ways to acquire new nurses and retain their very own. Throughout the years, the number one solution to this problem remains the same: decreasing nurse turnover, and increasing nurse retention. This paper discusses the causes of high nurse turnover rate, the negative effects on health care, and ways to improve the turnover rate. Before we can examine the consequences of high nurse turnover, we must examine the reasons nurses choose to leave their employer and look elsewhere for work. According to Hunt (2009), feeling overworked is the number one cause for nurse turnover in health care settings. Other reasons at the top of the list include, lack of support from employers and few opportunities for advancement. Due to the nursing shortage, staffing has been an issue in many healthcare facilities. As a result, units are consistently short staffed, causing nurses to feel overworked and unsupported by management. Cline (2004) highlighted nurse frustration when a participant in the study stated, "When you're constantly short–staffed and feel your managers aren't supporting you at least by saying, 'Thank you, I know you must've had a hard ... There are many routines to uphold and if you aren't good with organization, then working in the hospital isn't for you. I have chosen a career path to be a nurse anesthetist and this essay will tell you why. Job characteristics for a general nurse anesthetist include: reviewing medical history, evaluating patients and their accurate method of anesthesia, properly measuring and overseeing the level and speed of the anesthesia being administered, keeping an eye on patient's vital signs, informing the surgeon if patient becomes unstable, attending to the patient's needs before, during and after the surgery, and checking on the patient's recovery from the anesthesia. ... Communication As A Nurse As a current nursing student, the book Fundamentals of Nursing will enhance my career by helping me implement good communication skills and understanding spiritual health. Chapter 24 that discusses communication and chapter 36 that discusses spiritual health are the chapters that helped me in writing this report. It is factual that effective communication skills and competency are needed upon achieving a profession as a nurse. Upon first greeting a patient the distinctive level of communication is apparent. Communication has two core factors, non–verbal and verbal. Both types of communication will be implemented on a regular basis as I interact with patients in my nursing career. It will be vital for me to attain an increased and developed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I now understand that spirituality represents for numerous people a critical element that solidifies their belief in God. Showcasing spirituality through common practices, via good service to others, passing on wisdom, or showing compassion, usually brings deep intimate satisfactions. From my reading and comprehension, as I will concentrate on creating a secure, wholesome and warm environment for the patients in my care. I understand that the nurses' function is to feel and capture the imbalance that is present, and to get rid of the barricades in the patients' recovery process. Spiritual care should be a positive and delicate approach, on the basis of trust and a terrific comfortable relationship between the patient and nurse in an effort to deliver quality care. Holistic care focuses on the emotional, physical, economic, social and spiritual needs of individual people. Patient care has an important goal which is obtaining and maintaining the equality between mind, body and environment, as this balance is important for a fulfilling life. In closing, this textbook has fundamentally taught me that Nurses play an important role in the health care profession helping and caring for individuals, or whole families and it has many important elements which are needed to ensure a great quality of ... • 4. Nurse Mentor Interview : Nurses Nurse Mentor Interview Throughout this clinical semester, I have worked with several different registered nurses (RNs) and have been able to develop mentoring relationships with many of the staff on the unit. During our time together, I interviewed several of my nurse mentors and elicited information regarding their nursing experiences and the culture of the environment in which they work. The following conversations provide a summarization of my nurse mentors' responses to the selected interview questions. What was your experience of transition into practice from the role of a student to that of a RN and what advice does you have? The first year working as a RN was especially difficult. I started out on a medical–surgical unit with an oncology focus. I felt overwhelmed much of the time, but thankfully I was surrounded by experienced nurses. All of my coworkers on that unit had at least eight years of experience and so I was able to go to them for advice and guidance regarding the issues with which I was struggling. My advice to new nurses is to know their resources and ask the experienced nurses on the floor for help. How do you deal with new nurses of a different generation? I would not say that I have had too much difficulty in dealing with the younger generation of nurses. As long as people are willing to learn and work hard, I will have no problem working with them. Who is your role model and why? My role model is one of the nursing instructors I had in nursing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If you're a caring person who enjoys supporting others, then a nurses program could be a great option for you. One of the first historically recorded nursing colleges was established in India in 250 B. C. E. In that time period, the Buddhist Native american indian ruler, Ashoka, ordered clinics to be built along the key travelling routes. These kinds of hospitals were supplied with nurses and medicines to help the sick and weary. 2. Nursing hats are designed from nuns' habits The original medical cap is designed after a nun's habit. • 8. A Interview With A Nurse When was the last time you were in the hospital or a loved one was in the hospital, and ever wondered where the nurse is, and they haven 't returned for hours. You finally push the assistance button several times, and they open the door and hurriedly say, "I will be right back", then you don 't see them for a while again. When they come back to check up on you, you explain to them what you need, and then they send in a less qualified staff member to assist you. At this point, you become very annoyed and frustrated not to mention scared to be admitted in the hospital to begin with. Little do you know, your nurse has ten other patients and other non–nursing tasks that they are responsible taking care of. They have been working a double shift and are extremely exhausted, and a large stack of charts that they will have to do before their shift is over. As a patient, you now become frustrated and are not happy about this; as a nurse, they are just as frustrated as you are, not only because the amount of work they have but more importantly they can 't deliver the appropriate care they long to give. For most hospitals they do not hire enough registered nurses for reasons that are good and bad. This is an issue that needs to be addressed not only locally but nationally and on a constant basis. The main focus is teamwork and providing the safest, timeliest, and best quality care for the patients. It is becoming increasingly clear that maintaining and improving the health of the population requires team–based care (Landman, Aannestad, Smoldt, & Cortese 2014). While nurses provide care for patients, it is difficult to differentiate between an associate degree nurse and a baccalaureate degree nurse. When reflecting back on the RN–BSN program and the all the research and papers I did on evidence–based practice, I now understand why. I now know the differences in an associate degree nurse and a baccalaureate degree nurse, and the competencies of both. As I pursued my associate degree, I was taught the fundamental basics of nursing, including developing care plans and performing everyday nursing skills to take care of patients. The main differences I have noticed while completing my bachelor degree is the importance of research, leadership, and public health. A baccalaureate degree nurse is better educated when it comes to stressful situations, and able to make quick, spur of the moment decisions to help keep patients safe. I felt that each course in the RN–BSN program helped me to understand the importance of research for that particular course. I believe I will take what I learned while researching for specific topics with me, as I provide patient centered care as a baccalaureate prepared nurse. • 11. Interaction With Nurses Interaction with and teaching of patients is a core duty of nurses (Whitman, 2015). During their initial training, nursing students must be taught how to communicate with and teach patients; however, most nursing curriculums do not explicitly instruct nursing students in andragogy theories and teaching techniques. Instead, many nursing curriculums rely on the model of the nursing instructor and clinical experiences to teach these elements, such as nursing professionalism and patient education (Azadi et al., 2017). To complicate matters, once they achieve their nursing license, nurses are expected to competently interact with and care for patients from a variety of backgrounds including those who have special needs or come from vulnerable ... Many nurses, nursing faculty, and nursing students may hold fear, negative attitudes, or aversion toward mental illness which frames their experiences; thus, perpetuating the fear of mental illness and negatively impacting the mental health nursing experience (Kashihara, 2015). Their acuity score is much lower than a patient in the intensive care unit or a step–down unit. Healthcare systems that utilize staffing by acuity are looking at the safe number of certain levels of patients that one nurse can care for. The down side to staffing by acuity is that many feel administration will influence numbers to maintain a high number of patients per nurse. If all patients on a unit were a level eight then most acuity systems would call for three patients to one nurse but if all patients on a unit were all level ones then a nurse could be caring for as many as eight to ten patients. Acuity does not take every patient encounter into consideration. For instance a dementia patient may have a low acuity based on the nursing care since they usually do not have indwelling lines or invasive procedures. Although the same patient may require a high amount help with activities of daily living, decision making and education. (Walsh, 2003) Thus staffing by acuity can be a subjective form of nurse staffing. When done accurately, acuity based staffing can be very beneficial for the nursing staff. Illinois is one of many states that have implemented laws requiring hospitals to base staffing on acuity systems and then report compliance on a quarterly basis. Illinois Hospital Association supports acuity based staffing over nurse–to–patient ratios. (Anonymous. 2008) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Nurse Practitioners : A Nurse Practitioner Nurse Practitioner When somebody needs to go to the doctor now a days, they might not necessarily see one, it most likely would be a nurse practitioner. They do the same job as a physician more or less but are a little different in other words, they are less expensive & they are more hands on, so to speak, being more one on one with the patient & their needs or wants in dealing with illnesses, broken bones, diseases, common cold, or loss of loved ones. They go further than a normal physician would. Today, there are over 205,000nurse practitioners in the united states today (American Association of Nurse Practitioners). The first nurse was formed during the Christian era and their education was passed on orally from generation to generation, they didn't have to go to a school or have to spend so many hours at a clinic. Females or infants born with the placenta covering their face were meant to be a nurse or were to work in the medical field. The ideal nurse was to be selfless, helpful, and sacrificed themselves for others they never put themselves first. Nurse care was done inside homes unless you had no family in the area then you would take them to the nearest hospital, the first hospital was established by a woman named Fabiola. In doing so, the nurses will determine the measures that should be taken to improve the patients' health in case it is on the decline. Absorption is characterized by being fully concentrated and happily engrossed in one's work, whereby time passes quickly and one has difficulties with detaching oneself from work. The type of nursing career I decided to research is an OB/GYN nurse. OB/GYN is used as an abbreviation for the actual name of this career. The "OB" is short for obstetrics or for an obstetrician, which is a physician who specializes in delivering babies. "GYN" is short for gynecology or for gynecologist, which is a physician who specializes in treating diseases which develop in the female reproductive system. "Worst is having a patient that is non compliant and that doesn't want to take care of them or baby, she doesn't try. Yet I see other women who really want a baby and care for themselves but they can't have babies. Apart from this, I really love my job". Women who don't take care of themselves usually do not follow up with what the nurses or the doctor tells her to do, or she just does not go to the appointment she has. Usually women who don't take care of themselves don't really care about the baby, which is why it is really hard on the nurse. Another thing that they said is a downfall in their job is that they experience emotions with patients who lose their baby. Pregnancy loss is something they see a lot. Many patients really want and try to be parents, but when they lose a baby, they get really emotional and as nurses they need to know how to handle and say the right words. When patients miscarry, loose their baby, patients have a lot of questions and as nurses they have to know how to answer and respond to them. Thats why they they do not like seeing patients that do not take care of themselves because parents that really want a baby can not have one. • 22. The Death Of A Nurse The Josie King story is truly unimaginable. I wish I could review her chart to better understand how she fell through the cracks. It seems hard to believe that the signs of increasing dehydration went unnoticed or even worse, were viewed as 'normal'. Even more difficult to believe is that the nurses were unable to create a partnership with the mother. In the story, it seems as if the mom was dismissed as a partner in the process and felt as if no one was listening to her. Although a family member may not have the medical knowledge anurse has, they have knowledge of their child and that is lost without their help. What would have happened if the nurse spent a moment to understand where Josie's mother was coming from or called the doctor to communicate her symptoms? Did she truly believe her symptoms were normal or was she too busy with something else? It shouldn't be possible to have a child be NPO without IV fluids running. While it takes children a long time to stop compensating, I'm sure there were signs of dehydration. During a bath, the mom notes how furiously Josie was sucking on a wet washcloth. If it was known that she was not drinking, how could these signs have been missed? It seems as though a total breakdown in obvious behavior and team communication is evident. The care delivery model failed to keep Josie safe. The nurse or team assigned seemed to lack knowledge of symptoms and the skill sets present did not work to make up for another team members deficits. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. The Unpreparedness Of Nurses The article by Sylvia Baack and Danita Alfred attempted in earnest to determine the preparedness of nurses to manage disaster situations. The research was based on an online study on nurses by asking them to fill out questionnaires that would then determine how they felt about disaster situations and how best to handle them (Baack & Alfred, 2013). The use of the 620 nurses was prudent as it provided a significant sample space to handle the possibility of bias. The scope of the research was however limited to the Texas state of America. This meant that the responses given represented the general feeling among southern states as Texas is among the southern part of the country. Nevertheless, given that no information was sought about where these nurses were trained, it is arguable that their vocational training could have been distributed among all states in the nation or fairly among a majority of the states.... However, the large scope again makes up for this weakness since a good number of respondents would give the honest and discrete information required. This is a common opinion among health professionals since many nurses according to Veenema (2012) are often unprepared for emergencies. • 28. Nurse Retention Do you agree with the identified problem? Yes, I agree that the there is an issue in regards to orientation process and the relationship it has on staff retention within our unit. I believe that a lack of proper orientation can have a tremendous impact of nurse retention rates. With improper orientation the entire unit suffers. It correlates with a decrease in the quality of care, patient safety and satisfaction, as well as nurse confidence. Having all staff trained in an extensive and consistent orientation program brings about better continuity and higher quality of care, as well as an increase in positive patient outcomes. The lack of an extensive and consistent orientation program leads to a deficit in critical thinking skills and clinical knowledge. When a nurse is not fully prepared for her role within a unit, it directly translates into patient care practices. I believe it also leads to a decrease in staff satisfaction– for the new nurse as well as the seasoned nurses within the unit. This frustration can lead to burnout and ultimately a high turnover rate of nurses. Suggestions for improving the problem: A consistent and extensive orientation program for new nurses. • 39. Communication Between Nurses And Nurses Essay The hand over process of communication between nurses to nurses is done with the intention of transferring essential information for safe, and patient centered care. Traditionally, this shift report has been done away from the patient's bedside, at the nurse's station, or other place like staff's room. In addition, the shift report used to be delivered through audio recording of the patient's information. These reporting mechanisms did not include face–to–face reporting of the patient information, nor involvement of patient. Therefore, information regarding the patient's care was not shared with the patient, leaving them out of his/her own care plan. Recent studies and development of Patient Centered Care Philosophy have challenged this belief of giving a report away from the patient. Tan (2015) said, "Shift report must not only be restricted in nurse to nurse communication, but it must involve patients as the recipients of care" (p. 1). Incorporating the patient into the end of shift report is essential for providing patient centered care and patient satisfaction.
