Here are the key differences between Stan Shih's and Leonard Liu's management styles based on the case:
- Stan Shih had a more frugal and hands-off management style, delegating decision making to harness employees' entrepreneurial spirit. Liu had a more formal, professional, and centralized management style as a senior IBM executive.
- Shih believed in bias for delegation and an informal manner, while Liu had a reputation for a more formal, centralized, "no-nonsense" professional style he brought from IBM.
- Shih's style empowered employees and fostered innovation from the bottom-up, while Liu's style from IBM was more top-down and centralized in decision making.

1. Acer Case
Acer. Inc | Taiwan's Rampaging Dragon | 9/26/2012 |
How would you account for Acer's outstanding startâup? What caused this company to outpace
scores of other Taiwanese PC companies?
Acer is a company that was founded by Shih, his wife and a couple of other people. It was founded
in the 1976 and the electronic market at that time was still small. This time cellphones where not yet
even invented so the market was pretty good for a starter. This is I believe one of the reasons why
Acer's startup was outstanding.
One of the other many reasons is because of their willingness to try everything that came their way.
They dared to do everything, from providing engineering to publishing trade journals. They were

What do you think of his new business concept ("fast food" model, Uniload, Smiling Curve, etc.)
and his new organization model (ClientâServer, 21 in 21, etc.)? Is this a visionary framework for
Acer's future competitiveness, or a random series of illâconceived topâdown initiatives?
Shih came back with some lessons learnt. Some of which came from Leu despite him leaving in a
bad way. He found Acers organization was better and this helped him achieve his goals. He brought
in new philosophies which lifted up the company and he communicated his ideas to Acer employees
making sure they got the message and then acted upon it. The philosophy like 'fast food businesses'
helped Acer to lower its costs and in the end make more profits. I believe through these philosophies
Shih managed to get the attention of its employees and the message was therefore well
communicated.
Despite these strategies being vague I believe they were visionary. Acer needed to be redeemed to
its old position and be given back its power. Its employees needed to be encouraged and be
motivated to work. These strategies did the trick and created a turnaround for Acer.
As Stan, what action would you take on Aspire? Should he approve its continued development?
Should he allow AAC to continue to lead the project?
With all of the changes Acer underwent, I would say Aspire was a good innovation and it is a chance
not to pass. Aspire is a

Of the three companies, Apple had the highest proportion of current assets relative to fixed assets.
On average, Apple's current assets stood at more than 85% of all its assets. This compared to Dell's
76% and Gateways 72%. The high investment in current assets points to high inventory lagging the
companies' stores.
Total assets relative to total liabilities have been relatively stable at around 53â69 for Dell 35â62%
for apple and 42â53% for gateway. It is only Apple's ratio of total assets relative to total liabilities
that has been on the rise. On average, the other two companies have shown a slow downward trend.
This indicates their preference for financing using equity rather than debt.

ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR Case Analysis â Acer, Inc: Taiwan's Rampaging Dragon
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Stan Shih founded Multitech, now known as Acer, in 1976. Empowered
by Shih's vision and management style, the company grasped every opportunity that came its way. It
grew from a 11âemployees company to a 5000 employees company in no time. The company,
however, after generating profits for years, went through the painful professionalization of its
management. Change in the competitive dynamics in the PC market coupled with the internal
management problems faced by Acer resulted in the incurring of substantial losses. As Stan Shih

The idea of joining forces with the small players who believed in the commoner's culture led to
Acer's early successes. The financial scenario for Acer under Stan Shih improved from a resulted net
income of $0.4 Million in 1984 to $26.5 Million in 1988. The gross margin remained high due to the
principle of frugality and the ratio between current assets to current liabilities remained positive
which was reflected by the increasing stock prices. PROFESSIONALIZATION AND PROBLEMS
FOR ACER With the changing market scenario in terms of competition and the resulting price wars,
Acer faced another problem of shortage of management experts. To combat this obstacle, Shih
recruited new managers who were perceived as the Paratroopers or the intruders by the existing
employees. Decline in the market for miniâcomputers and subsequent launch of a new product â
"Concer" to fight with the falling sales could only add to the overall losses. Reduction in prices by
the competitors resulted in reduced margin for Acer and the company slowly found it drifting away
from the commoner's culture. The appointment of Leonard Liu as the CEO and Chairman of AAC
led to more problems for the company. The acquiring of Altos brand caused more financial problems

"Marketing / Sales" While most competitors supplied machines based on orders from distributors,
resellers, retailers, Dell took orders directly from customers. Dell used indicators of a company's
potential PC purchases, such as the number of employees and the number of PCs per employee, to
divide customers into two groups: Relationship buyers and Transaction buyers.
Relationship buyers were large companies and institutions that could be counted on to place
repeated orders for multiple PCs. Dell assigned a team of outside sales reps and inside sales reps to
each Relationship account. Over a thousand outside sales reps spent their time in the field,
understanding customer needs, courting customer personnel, helping customers configure their
information systems, and promoting Dell's products and services. Inside sales reps, located in call
centers, received telephone calls from assigned customers. Because Relationship customers typically
specified particular PC configurations that their employees were allowed to order, the inside reps
serving such customers simply took orders and provided product and delivery information. Both
inside and outside sales reps had access to onâline information about a customer's entire purchase
history and worked closely with Dell personnel responsible for afterâsale service and technical
support.
Transaction buyers included smallâtoâmedium businesses and home computer users. The company

11. Why Do Boxelder Maple Trees Affect Recruitment Success?
Introduction
Boxelder Maple trees depend on the dispersal of their samaras to reproduce. The samaras are the
seeds of the tree that are shaped in such a way that the wing of the seed causing it to spin. The seed
does not fall directly but instead twirls like a helicopter making it stay in the air longer. With the
wind the seed can then me dispersed away from the parent tree to take rout and grow on its own.
Not all seeds float away from the parent seed and take rout. Some end up falling to close to the
parent tree not allowing them to survive due to not getting nutrients and sunlight. "Recent field
studies have made progress in elucidating the mechanisms behind these patterns and the
implications of these patterns for recruitment success" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I then predicted that if I took the 6 largest and 6 smallest samaras from a group of 20 randomly
selected samaras, and dropped them from the same height each time, then the larger seeds would
take a significantly longer time in the air compared to the smaller seeds. After analyzing my results,
I found my hypothesis to be rejected. The length on the bigger seeds did not show any significant
difference from the smaller seeds. The tâtest proved my hypothesis to be incorrect due to the t value
being less than what it should have been. My null hypothesis of length having nothing to do with the
drop time was proven correct. "Despite considerable interspecific variation in samara dimensions,
terminal velocities are quite similar for all species and exhibit good fit to a general model relating
flight characteristics to samara dimensions for maple samaras" (Guries and Nordhiem). This
supports that the seeds of different sizes have very little difference. With the data that I collected and
this resource I can conclude that the size of the Box Elder Maple samara does not affect the amount
of time the seed remain in the air. Dispersal of the seeds do not fully depend on the length of the
seed from the experiment conducted. It could count on other outside forces as in wind and the height

13. Characteristics Of Japanese Maple Trees
Japanese Maple trees are a great edition to any yard. They are an elegant looking tree, with soft,
delicate looking leaves that can add dimensionality to your yard. To keep your Japanese Maples in
good health, you need to be aware of the three most common tree disease that infected Japanese
Maple trees as well as what to do about these diseases.
Anthracnose Disease
Anthracnose disease is caused by fungus and generally affected Japanese Maple Trees that are
planted in areas that are warm and experience frequent humidity.
Disease Characteristics
On your Japanese maple, the most common visual sign of Anthracnose are small spots on the leaves.
These spots are usually either yellow or brown in color. The spots start out dotting your leaves. Over
time, the spots expand until they cover up almost the entire leaf.
Yellow or brown spots can also appear on the twigs on your trees. They generally appear on new
growth.
Treatment
Prevention is the key with anthracnose. Make sure to not overwater plants. Do not get the leaves wet
when watering; use a drip sprinkler instead to water your trees. Put compost around the base of your
Japanese Maples to keep the soil healthy.
To get rid of anthracnose once it is present, usually copperâbased fungicides are used to kill off the
fungus. Infected branches can also be pruned off your trees. All clippings from your Japanese Maple
should be disposed of in the trash, and not left to compost in your yard to prevent the spread of

My family has been making maple syrup for over 100 years. My siblings, cousins, and I are the 6th
generation of syrup makers in our family. Everyone in the family has their part to play during the 6
week long syrup season. The process of making maple syrup is a long and hard one but in the end
it's totally worth all of the loss of sleep, frozen and aching limbs, and the extra time we take out of
our lives to make syrup every year. Our family usually starts the season on Valentine's Day as a

B which is mostly used in the kitchen but personally, this is my favorite grade of syrup. It is more
robust in flavor and it is used mostly to cook with. The next grade is C which is the commercial
syrup. We don't usually sell this stuff off our shelves to the customers but it still has a good maple
flavor. The last grade is grade D which is the nastiest syrup of the season. Its what we call "Buddy

it from the buds of the trees. We don't sell it or even bother putting it in the jugs like the rest of the

grocery stores. So, the factories take 2% of the "Buddy Syrup", and 98% water and corn syrup and
mix it all together and send it to grocery stores all over and most people buy it that way. The buddy
syrup can also be used to sweeten tobacco and horse feed. It can also turn out to look just like the
other grades that we actually sell to customers. All I have to say is that Mother Nature can be great

19. English Ivy : An Effect On The Growth Of Moss On Trees
Our sample data supports our alternative hypothesis that English Ivy does have an effect on the
growth of moss on trees. Our pâvalue shows that our data is statistically significant demonstrating
that moss growth may be inhibited by the presence of ivy. Assuming our null hypothesis, that ivy
has no effect on moss growth, our pâvalue states the probability of getting a sample as extreme or
more extreme than our sample with a tâtest of â2.33 is 2.18%. With this pâvalue, we can reject our
null hypothesis.
Our alternative hypothesis would suggest that moss and ivy have a competitive relationship. The
Competitive Exclusion Principle states that no two species can coexist if they share the same niche.
In our study, both ivy and moss grew at eye level on Big Leaf Maples, Spruces, Red Cedars, Alders,
and Hemlocks. Although their shared location is only part of moss's and ivy's niches, moss's growth
is still restricted by ivy presence. Our alternative hypothesis suggests that ivy is a superior
competitor. Because ivy grows faster than moss (Richards 2008) (StenĂžien 2008), the ivy can more
rapidly cover the circumference of trees, depriving the moss of sunlight and bark nutrients. Ivy
could also have preemptive relationship towards moss. In preemption, ivy establishes its space on
the trees and prevents other organisms like moss from using the space. Both of these competitive
relationships shows that ivy impedes the moss from growing on the trees. The Although we have

Positive regression in relationship between wing loading and rate of Silver maple samaras
INTRODUCTION Ecological tradeoffs occur throughout a species' lifespan, giving little energy to
one or more characteristics in order to focus energy and attention on a separate characteristic. Three
common characteristics found in an ecological tradeoff include fecundity, age of reproductive
maturity, and juvenile survivorship. Juvenile survivorship is important, especially to Silver maple
(Acer saccharinum) because a species must have an adequate survival level to not become extinct
(Molles 2010). One way tree fruits have a juvenile survivorship is because of the varying seed
dispersal methods with which they find new ground to germinate. Secondary seed dispersal
describes the process when other organisms pick up, intentionally or not, the seeds and carry them
off to a new location to begin growing. Wind dispersion the most common dispersal method among
silver maple samaras, incorporating the specialized design of the samara's seed coat (CITE). The
hypothesis of the total experiment is that as the mass of the samara increases, thus increasing the
wing loading, the rate of the samara will increase significantly.
METHODS

25. Development Of A Forest That Is Dominated By Sugar Maple
Abstract
Students conducted research relating to mechanisms of coexistence within a forest that is dominated
by sugar maple (Acer saccharum) compared to beech (Fagus grandifolia). The objective of the study
was to test three hypotheses relating to competition within trees, maintenance along with
regeneration of sugar maple and beech within Warren Woods, located in Michigan, IL. The first
evaluated whether or not highly despotic forms of lottery completion was present, in which a few
trees ever achieve canopy. Second, in response to competition, canopy trees were evaluated in terms
of being uniformly or randomly distributed within their unique environment. Third, evidence of
tradeoffs as both types of trees make their way up to a canopy was assessed. From the plots
established and analyzing through density and frequency, students examined that sugar maple was
more abundant, viewed in large fractions among the subâcanopy classes. Beech may have had a
lower frequency, yet it had a higher density in Warren Woods. Evidence suggested that there was a
lottery competition taking place in the forest, as seen by the number of seedlings being higher than
saplings, which are greater than subâcanopies, which are greater than canopies. The evaluation of
the understory environment determined that a mechanism of coexistence, between both species, was
evident since the number of canopies was higher than that of subâcanopies. Each class appears to

"Aspire" and apply transnational strategy to defined the corporation global vision into the local

Strategic Issues From the information that was provided, I'd prioritized strategic issues for Acer, Inc.

of the high important issues, it will be broken down into internal and external issues.

these individuals are only there for the corporate stock offering. This is a high priority issue because,

Acer saccharum
Acer saccharum, commonly referred to as the sugar maple is an ecologically and economically
significant hardwood tree found in the northeastern and Midwest regions of the United States and
the Eastern of Canada. The sugar maple is a native species that has competed well in many
environments under diverse conditions. This species is important to maintain biodiversity in its
native areas.
Acer saccharum is in the Aceraceae taxonomic family. There are varieties of sugar maple: Acer
saccharum var. saccharum Marsh and Acer saccharum var. schneckii Rehder (ITIS, n.d.). Acer
saccharum has several common names in addition to sugar maple â hard maple, rock maple, head
maple, sugar tree and bird'sâeye maple (Nesom, Guy (North Carolina Botanical Garden, University
of Norht Carolina, Chapel Hill, 2006).
Acer saccharum has different growth habits depending on the environment. The largest reported
individual tree was found near Bethany, West Virginia; it had a diameter of 5.6 feet, a crown spread
of 75 feet and its height was over 100 feet (Luzadis & Gossett, 1996). Generally, those trees grown
to maturity in the open have a crown of 60â80 feet in diameter, a height between 70â90 feet and a
trunk diameter of 2â3 feet. Trees grown in the forest are not as big nor do they have as wide a trunk.
In addition to their smaller size, trees grown in the forest or woods have branches closer to the
canopy than trees

As Acer Group CEO J.T. Wang noted recently, "China and

Still, Acer faces tough competition in China. Lenovo, a local mainland brand, dominates with about
