As President of the Alma Mater Society, UBC’s student society, I am
naturally a champion of student leadership, and one of the SLC’s biggest
advocates. The SLC is UBC’s largest student-run event, and one of, if not
the, biggest in Canada. And in this case, bigger really is better.

The Learning Centre is delighted to be sponsoring the Student Leadership If you’re involved at UBC, you’ve definitely heard of the SLC - it’s the
Conference again this year. This student-led event is, in our opinion, one flagship UBC conference of the year. Everybody who plays a role in
of the most important events on campus each year and we welcome the campus life goes to the SLC to interact with other groups and to grow as
opportunity to host and support such an inspiring group of colleagues. leaders in the community. It’s the place to meet the leaders of
tomorrow.

5. PROGRAM
The agenda for the SLC 2012 will include events that cater to a variety
of students, communities, and learning experiences. From a powerful
keynote address and featured speakers, to student-led workshops and
intimate project-based dialogue, delegates and community members
alike will benefit from the opportunity to come together to share their
ideas and experiences.
Featured Presenters
Back by popular demand, the SLC 2012 offers twelve presentations
featuring knowledgeable, experienced community members. Presenter
will speak on a variety of themes, share their unique stories, and
highlight how leadership and initiative helped them attain their goals.
Past presenters have included entrepreneurs, government officials, and
Nobel Laureates.
Concurrent Programs
Practical skill-based workshops, best practice presentations, and
idea-sharing round tables are facilitated by students, alumni, faculty,
and staff. Student-led sessions enable peer-to-peer learning and offer
a great opportunity for student presenters to develop their professional
presentation skills.

6. Keynote Address
A plenary session featuring a keynote address at the Chan Centre for
Performing Arts concludes the one-day program. Each year, students
report that the keynote address is a conference highlight, inspiring them
to consider their potential as global leaders and how they might initiate
a change in the world around them. Dr. Stephen Lewis, Roberta Bondar
and Justin Trudeau are just some of the keynote speakers who have
previously spoken at the SLC.
Leadership Opportunities Fair
The Leadership Opportunities Fair features booths from different orga-
nizations that offer student leadership and involvement opportunities.
Participants include on-campus and community partners who offer both
short-term and long-term involvement and leadership opportunities.
Case Studies
The case studies, which are student-driven, aim to explore tangible
opportunities to address real issues in the local community. Small
groups will discuss community needs and work together to brainstorm
solutions and a course of action.
