Chapter 5: Karma-Sanyasa Yoga (The yoga of action and knowledge) -29 verses. Arjuna wants to know if it is better to renounce action or to be involved in action (5:1). Krishna answers that one who is detached from his works' fruits is the one who is truly detached (5:2-6). He will be in a position to see action in inaction and inaction in action (4:18). Such a person knows that, while the body acts, he, the soul, actually does nothing (5:7).

Dejection is the experience of your bondage,
not knowing that is what you are experiencing.
It is when the being comes forward and
the outer personality doesn't know what is happening.
Let's talk about the outer personality.

3. 5 principles
You have to periodically renounce and you have to get back in touch with who you are
through knowledge. This is the means by which the soul continues to disassociate from
its habit of identification with matter.
All of these are necessary even after you have become grounded in who you are,
because when you reenter into matter the world tries to coat you again.

5. Gita - “who you are”“Tvam” (Soul). in the first six chapters
3-The third chapter takes up Karma-Yoga which deals with duties of
all of us towards our “Tvam” (Soul). Indirectly, they are duties of our
universe and our society.
4-In the fourth chapter, he takes up Jnana-Yoga. By performing right
action how one could get real knowledge and by real knowledge how
one should act, is taken up in this chapter.
1-The first chapter is an introduction to the discourse.
It brings out the state of distress in Arjuna
When one performs
nishkäma karma yoga
on the level of
knowledge of the soul
only, then he tends to
remain impersonal,
6-The sixth chapter is Dhyana-Yoga which gives a detailed
description of how to meditate and realise the “REAL YOU”
inside the “FALSE YOU”.
5-The fifth chapter is Karmasamnyasa-Yoga wherein he talks about
renunciation of fruits of action which will help us to realise
the Atman in us and I am not the doer
there is a higher controller,as seen in the fifth chapter,
then he develops a consciousness of the Supersoul
2 -Chapter a detailed description of the “Real Arjuna”, the Atman (Tvam) and ends up in a
wonderful description of a Sthitaprajna (man of steady wisdom). to do Karma-Yoga,

9. How this Discourse is connected with the previous one ?
Arjuna feels confused and doubtful about the right course of conduct
for him. So he asks the Lord to tell him decisively which is superior-Sankya
or Karma. The Discourse begins with Arjuna's question.
In the Third and Fourth Discourses, both Nishkama Karma and Jnana are
alternately emphasised
Gita Makarandam

10. So virāga or vairāgya is being “apart from emotional coloration.” It is seeing
the world as it is, not as our emotions make it appear to us. We are back to
good old tattvatah, the way things really are. If we make a continued
effort to see things as they are, not as our emotions color them, we
can learn to control our mind. That is what Krishna tells Arjuna.
http://www.theosophical.org/files/resources/selfstudy/Gita.pdf
“ VAIRAGYA"
" VI “
is “apart from.”
" RAGA "
“COLOR,”
+
"SAM “
comes from a root
meaning
“join together.”
And colors are always associated with emotions.
We are in the pink when we are happy and
see red when angry.
We are in a blue mood when sad, or
a black mood when despairing, or
a gray mood when depressed.
We are in a brown study when distracted.
We are green with envy or yellow when cowardly,
or purple with rage.
Clairvoyants tell us that when we are overpowered by an emotion, our auras are
flushed with a color corresponding to that emotion.
So then we perceive and respond to the world through that emotional coloration.
Then we are not seeing the world as it is, but as we have colored it with our
emotion.

15. Swami Alavandar says that the Fifth Chapter tells us four aspects of
Karma yoga:
Though the easiness of Karma yoga was told in the Third Chapter,
it is the quickness with which the result is
obtained is emphasized in this Chapter.
This is in addition to the advantages of Karma yoga detailed in the Third
chapter, viz: it is habitual right from birth, it is required even by a Gyana yogi
and can not slip.
1-Karma yoga is easy to practice
2-Karma yoga yields result quickly
3-Karma yoga should be performed without the feeling that
it was done by 'me'
4-Karma yoga thus practiced will make
one to realize all as equal.

16. When Knowledge is obtained
Nishkama karma possible
Why the chapter is named as Karmasannyasa Yoga ?
Man can not live without action
,(Nishkama karma) Action without desire and attachment should be practiced,
the mind is thus purified
it becomes possible for man to remain fixed in the
Atmic state when there is no taint of the external world. NO DOERSHIP
When Self-realisation takes place, all action drop away of their own accord.

20. LIFESTYLE
When Self-knowledge is gained, one discovers that he is akartā, abhoktā and hence asaṃsārī.
Thus, the renunciation of body-identification is true sannyāsa which is called jñānakarma-sannyāsa.
This sannyāsa can coexist with active life because it is mental renunciation.
secluded life
āśrama-sannyāsa
[sānkhya, in this chapter]
But āśrama-sannyāsa cannot
coexist with active life because it
is physical renunciation.
active life
karma-yoga
[yoga, in this chapter]
In both the lifestyles, one is identified with the equipments. (B.M.I)
He is a kartā, and hence a saṃsārī.
This shows that lifestyle itself cannot give liberation.
Kṛṣṇa is advising Arjuna to remain in the society
and attain the goal of jñānakarma-sannyāsa. But
Arjuna mistakes the sannyāsa as āśrama-
sannyāsa and sees contradiction in Kṛṣṇa’s
teaching.)
20
21. But in the process of development,
the Yoga of desireless action is superior to the renunciation of action.
Karmayoga is better than Karmasannyasayoga.
Both lead to the highest good.
Both yield the fruit of liberation.

21
22. 5.1. Arjuna repeats the same question of the beginning of chapter 3.
He wants to know which of the two processes is more beneficial, not better.
5.2. Lord Krishna answers by saying that karma yoga (which Prabhupada then
translates as devotional service) is better.
5.3. This explains how beneficial karma yoga is.
5.4. Krishna now says that there is no real difference between them.
But of course the question is which is easier.
5.5. A further clatification of vs 5.4.
Through each one can achieve the same goal.
5.6. Here Lord Krishna is clearly recommending the process of karma yoga or
devotional service.
It is so much easier for a person who is entangled (Rajasic & Tamasic),
because they need to engage their bodies and minds.

24. 1. (5.7-9) A pure soul doesn’t become

fixes his mind on Krishna.in Chapter 3, as
Chapter 3 is more establishing the principle
of karma yoga as being a good principle and
recommending that it be practiced, But
Chapter 5 is talking about the practice and
results of advanced karma yoga or even
bhakti yoga.)
5.8-9. This is the condition of a person who is
performing nishkama karma yoga. He is
doing his duty, and, as stated in 3.27, he
knows that it is the modes which are acting,
not him
2. (5.10-12) One who does his duty in this
way, for Krishna, becomes peaceful, whereas
those who are after enjoying the fruits of
their work become entangled.
5.10. This is the devotee’s/nishkama karma
yogi’s result. He is unaffected by reactions.
Nice example of the lotus on water.
5.11. The yogi is always acting for
purification only.
5.12. So the devotee advances nicely and
becomes liberated, whereas the materialist
becomes more and more entangled.

25. 5.16. The result of understanding all this (including about the Supersoul’s place in the whole picture) is
that one becomes nicely enlightened about how things are working within this world.
The person who knows that his activities are being carried out by the material nature
after being sanctioned by the Supersoul attains enlightenment through that knowledge.
This is an elaboration on the principle briefly mentioned in 3.27.
5.13. The happy condition of the devotee/ni•
k€ma karma yogi. He is not the cause of his
activities, and so is unaffected by them.
5.14. The modes are doing everything, not the soul.
Soul does not:
create activities
induce others to act
create the fruits of action
5.15. The Supreme Lord is not responsible either (This means the Supersoul, as He is
referred to as vibhuh, or one who is controlling this world).

27. 5.24. This is the higher taste of 2.59. Experienced
through working in relation to the
Supersoul.
This is why it is possible for him to be so tolerant.
5.26. To achieve the state being described in
5.23-5.25 it will take time. But here Krishna is
encouraging us to keep going.
We can reach it in “the very near future.”
How is it going to happen in the near future if it is
so hard?.
1-Fixing his consciousness on the Lord, the person who has
learned the above knowledge sees all living beings equally.
Knowing material delights to be temporary he doesn’t delight
in them. (5.17-23) (Knowledge is not enough. One needs to
take shelter of the Supreme to be liberated.)
* Essentially the person described between 5. 17 & 26
is on the advanced platform of buddhi yoga, is in knowledge
of the Supersoul, and is more or less liberated.
5.17. “tad buddhayas” “tad atmanas.” The “tat” is the
Supersoul referred to in verse 15.
5.18.here sees such equality because he sees all the other
entities in relation to the Supersoul. This “true knowledge”
is the knowledge of everything in relation to the Supersoul.
5.19-20. So this is also describing the person who is seeing
the Supersoul or Krishna.
(5.20) But our gurus say that this applies also
to practising devotees. We should try for this.
5.21. Same.
5.22. Nice point about sense gratification.
BaladevaVidyabh™Krishna says that a nectar-
drinker is not interested in eating mud
5.23. So we really have to learn to be tolerant. At least we
should become that tolerant before we die.
And how do we achieve it? Through fixing our
minds on the Supersoul.
2-Tolerating and checking bodily and mental
urges, his happiness, activities and goals are
within. He is sinless, works for the welfare of
all. He is absorbed in trying for the Supreme,
and soon he will reach It.

29. We must bear in mind that Karma is the product of the "eleven senses," so that if we conquer all the senses we
shall stop Karma. This the Yogi proceeds to do by training his mental faculties to be conscious of nothing else but
Jiva (consciousness). Thus even mental activity is not permitted. The training is consummated in eight stages.
