1. Upside down microphone so we know it is about sound, the hooded girl in the background; we
known this song is going to be ‘cool’; the red flame/spark has connotations of danger and risk, the
excitement.
This shot shows the microphone swinging and the girl in a different position; the shots have beat.
The fact how we haven’t seen her face yet creates anticipation, waiting for the music to start.
Another shot of the microphone which appears still.
2. Shot of hood down; we still can’t see her face, we can understand that she is bad as if she doesn’t
want to release her identity.
This shot’s shows a wild woman, like an animal trying to escape out of a cage. The girl could be very
out-going and un-controllable.
A shot back to the microphone and her. Her microphone and lips are the main thing, so we can focus
on what is coming out of that ‘area’ (the music).
3. Another shot next to the railing which earlier looked like a cage. Looks like she has escaped and is
dancing, which is big effect of good music.
Two multi-coloured speakers show freedom, and expressiveness of feelings. The speakers create
sound and the camera is focusing on them. Speakers are able to produce sound for wide spread of
area, so this could be showing her aim of getting ‘her sound’ to be heard by many people.
Here she finally takes off her hood, and shows her full face but she does not look into the camera,
which gives the impression she is too good for us and we are here to watch her instead of her watch
us.
4. Another shot of a close up of the speaker. We can concentrate on the sound being produced and are
reminded that this sound is being heard by many people.
The animation drawing of an explosion is seen as a background earlier and now on its own. The
explosion looking painting has connotations of excitement and extremity. We know something has
happened suddenly. ‘M.I.A has arrived!’ sort of occurrence.
A shot of the other speaker, again showing how the music is getting around quickly and is being
heard.
