1. Are tuitions necessary?
The world has become very competitive and even the innocent students are not spared from
this cult. The pressure to perform well is immense on the students these days. This has led to
cramming into the books 24x7 leaving no time to play. A day in a student‟s life can be described
as tuition > school > home (homework) > rush for tuition(s)* > home (dinner) > studies >
next day
*mind the plural tuition word
Well, this tuition word has often fascinated me with regard to a student‟s school life. This has
been a hot topic of discussion on the varied discussion forums.
Okay, we will try to analyze this topic by putting forth the reason behind opting for a tuition
class apart for the regular school classes. Here we go:
1. Probably due to the student teacher ratio in the school classroom, the child feels his / her
doubts are not being fully resolved, therefore, to get a better understanding of the topic /
subject, the student joins an extra class for that particular subject.
2. At times the student is shy to ask doubts in the classroom, this leads to the improper
understanding of the subject (as the doubts keep on piling up) and ultimately to the scores
suffering in the exams. The perplexed parents think that perhaps the lessons taught at school
are not adequate therefore they resort to the idea of “tuition” for their children. They think that
the learning gap at school can be filled in by tuitions.
3. Some parents send their children for tuitions just because the rest of the world is doing so.
And because of the sheer insecurity that their child (the one not going for the tuitions) might
not perform well in the exams, parents resort to tuitions.
4. For some students the sole motive behind taking up tuitions is that tuitions can prove to the
some kind of rescue for the „out of the box‟ questions in the examination. Such students are
firm believer of the theory that if one joins tuition, the exam questions can be taken care of, or
worse, that “hints”/ prospective questions are shared with the students. And if one attends this
life becomes easier during the exams.
5. Another reason to enroll in tuition could be that the student is not very satisfied with the
lessons taught at school by a teacher. A better teacher is in town for that particular subject, so
why not to take up that extra class to get the concepts right?
6. The school curriculum these days has become so vast that it is imperative for a student to
take up some extra class which would help in wrapping up the mammoth study course. At
school the syllabus is finished just a couple of days prior to the date of exams so the child
hardly gets any time to revise. Tuitions help the child in jointly completing the syllabus at his
end, and have surplus time to revise and prepare for the exams in a systematic manner.
2. 7. Well, tuitions are another way of going through the same topics again and again which kind
of serves as a revision exercise and a better understanding of the topics ultimately.
Therefore, to sum up it can be said that the bulky curriculum in addition to the peer competition
is such that the students are (over)burdened with studies and to outperform one another. The
students try to gather knowledge from all possible sources to ensure that no stone is left
unturned in their attempt to prepare for the exams. Obviously, these multiple tuition sessions
and the cut-throat competitive environment have marred the child‟s innocence and their play
time.
But thankfully things are changing now and many schools are realizing that every child has
different learning capability. Many schools have started to pay attention to student-teacher ratio
to ensure that each student is attended to. Many schools in Pune for example do not allow
students beyond a number to maintain a student-teacher ratio. Some schools also are coming
up with education programs to encourage learning beyond classroom which will help
students gain knowledge through interesting techniques. Hopefully initiatives will help students
develop learning capabilities and start learning on their own no longer requiring to attending
tuitions.
