A lesson about clouds
Lindsey McSweeney
CI 350 TH 9:30a-10:45a
General Characteristics: Third grade class with 20 students; 11 girls, 9 boys;
90% white, 10% African-American.
Learning Styles: One student has an ADHD.
Specific Entry Competencies: Students enjoy hands on activities. Students
know of clouds, but have no other prior knowledge.
Main Objective: Students will identity the types of clouds that are in the sky.
Students will describe how clouds are made up, what each cloud means, how
to determine the different types of clouds, and where each cloud type is
located at in the sky. Students will develop their knowledge by creating a
wiki, using a webquest, facebook, watching YouTube videos, creating a blog,
creating a robot, making a cloud observation identifier, using Zello, create a
poster, create a PowerPoint presentation, and follow/comment on The
Weather Channel Twitter page. Students will demonstrate the knowledge by
then end of the week with 95% accuracy.
Day to Day Breakdown
Day 1: Describing clouds, how they are made, and how they stay in the sky.
Day 2: Types of clouds with a breakdown of each type
Day 3: Location of clouds and what each cloud means.
Day 4: How to determine the weather based on clouds.
Day 5: Cloud observation and discussion.
Use of Technology
Day 1: Create a Wiki at wikispaces.com, add comments to a
facebook page, and perform a lesson using a Webquest on
zunal.com
Day 2: Watch a short YouTube video I created on clouds. Students
will create a blog on clouds at blogger.com and place a picture of
their clouds using Photoshop. Students will also create a story
using powtoon.com.
Day 3: Follow The Weather Channel on Twitter to identify clouds
and create a robot dealing with clouds.
Day 4: Create a poster on clouds and a PowerPoint presentation on
clouds.
Day 5: Create a cloud observation identifier and use Zello app to
discuss clouds they see in the sky.
