As the Kingdom of Bahrain celebrates Bahraini Women’s Day this
month, it is fitting to look back on some of the most notable
advances made by Bahraini women in history
the first certified female driving instructors
in the GCC region.
Building on this history, the establishment
of the Supreme Council for Women in 2001
was one more distinctive step forward.
Headed by Her Royal Highness Princess
Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa the Wife of
the King of Bahrain and directly reporting
to the King of Bahrain, the Supreme
Council for Women plays a significant
role in supporting women, directing and
channeling their needs into the Kingdom’s
national development programmes. In
fact, the Supreme Council for Women
helped develop a national strategy for
the advancement of Bahraini women in
2005 as the first strategy of its kind to be
approved by the head of state.
This strategy succeeded in achieving
the desired effect on several levels,
including raising the rate of participation
of women in the government sector to
53%, in the private sector to about 33%,

2007 was a landmark year in Gulf Air and
the Kingdom of Bahrain’s history, as the
airline’s first female Bahraini pilot, Maysa
Hazeem, took to the skies. Today, Bahraini
women hold critical posts across a broad
spectrum of the national carrier’s divisions
– in airline – specific functions as captains,
first officers, engineers, technicians and
across a range of administrative and
business-focused departments. At Gulf
Air, Captain Yasmeen Fraidoon navigates
the skies and serves as a role model for
Bahraini women hoping to enter the field
of aviation.
Bahraini women are now not only
prominent members of Gulf Air’s
workforce, they have also been recognised
and employed – within a variety of fields
– in Bahrain and across the region. This
is all evident today, thanks to the Kingdom
of Bahrain’s groundbreaking history which
took strides, early on, to empower women
through education and employment.
The Kingdom of Bahrain institutionalised
women's work in the 1920’s while, in 1928,
Bahrain became the first Gulf state to
have education for women. That’s not all.
Bahraini women were the first in the GCC
region to drive a car - an event marked in
1945 when Ms. Fatima AlZayani became
the first Bahraini woman to obtain a driving
licence. Moreover, Bahraini women took
the lead 12 years ago when they became
and the proportion of female heads of
departments in government posts to
approximately 54%. As for occupations
that require special skills, there are now
around 58% and 33% in supervisory
professions. Bahraini women constitute
around 14% of the Boards of Directors of
public and private companies.
As a result of the success of the Supreme
Council for Women’s plans, projects and
programmes, the official institution for
women's affairs in Bahrain, including the
Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa
Award for the Empowerment of Women
in Public and Private sectors at the Local
Level for over 15 years; the United Nations
officially adopted this award at a global
level last year (2016) and announced it
in New York to the Commission on the
Status of Women at the UN headquarters.
The contributions of Bahrain’s women are
immeasurable and a source of great pride
to the Kingdom. It is fitting then, that,
since 2008, Bahraini Women’s Day has
been celebrated annually on December
1 as part of an initiative by Her Royal
Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim
Al Khalifa through the Supreme Council
for Women to honour the achievements
and valuable insights and contribution
made by Bahraini women towards
the development and progress of the
Kingdom of Bahrain.

drops straight into the town of Aspen. The

minutes from Beit Sheikh Isa – but be
careful, you can encounter long queues
at the restaurant. Continue to explore
Manama’s religious culture by visiting
Beit al-Qur’an, which houses a fascinating
collection of historic and handwritten
Qur’ans from around the world, as well as
the intricately designed Al-Fateh Mosque,
with a capacity for 7,000 worshippers: one
of the largest worldwide.
Evening
In the evening, head for a performance
at the Bahrain National Theatre, a
spectacular architectural masterpiece that
sits resplendent by the city’s waterfront.
Finally, take in a bit of the local culture for
dinner - and there's no better place to do
this in the art and restaurant quarter of
Adliya. This partly pedestrianised area is
a great place to explore on foot before or
after you sit down to eat just about any
style of cuisine you could wish for.
Day 2
Morning
Start your second day exploring
outside the city walls. On top of the list
for many Bahrain explorers is Qal’at
al-Bahrain, a UNESCO World Heritage
Site located several kilometres outside
Manama that dates back to 2,300 BC,
and perfectly encapsulates the rich
layers in Manama’s history. It was once
the capital of Dilmun, and it is where
archaeologists have discovered many
priceless artifacts of Dilmun culture,
that are displayed at the National
Museum. On top of the 30-acre mound
is a magnificent 15th century fort,
which was used by the Portuguese
when Bahrain was claimed as part of
their empire.
Afternoon
Visit the Bahrain International Circuit,
where the 2018 Formula 1 Gulf Air
Bahrain Grand Prix will be held next
year in April. Even in off-season
periods, the go-karting track and a
circuit tour are available for tourists.
Another family favourite is the Al Areen
Wildlife Park & Reserve, which provides
a habitat to 50 species of mammals,
100 plus bird species and around 100
desert plan species. Taking a bus tour
through the reserve is an opportunity
to relish the native life of this region.
Of particular interest is the Arabian
Oryx, a stunning gazelle-like creature
native to the Arabian Gulf that was once
threatened with extinction.
Evening
Once you’re back in the city, you can
either relax by doing some shopping
for souvenirs in one of the traditional
marketplaces such as the Manama
Souq – pick up some unique wares at
niche places like the Spice Souq, Gold
Souq, and Kingdom of Perfumes – or
take a break from the sweltering heat
by enjoying the rest of your day at

44. Of late, the women’s division of World
Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) seems to
have become one of the company’s top
priorities, with a lot of focus on signing
talent from all over the world. In this drive,
last month, the WWE signed Jordanian
Shadia Bseiso, its first female performer
from the Arab world as the US-based
entertainment company seeks to drive
its way into lucrative foreign markets.
Arab women are continuing to shatter
stereotypes and break new ground.
“Shadia joining the WWE’s developmental
system underscores its ongoing
commitment to building a talent roster as
diverse as its fan base,” WWE Executive
Vice President, Paul Levesque, who
is more popularly known as “Triple H”
was quoted as saying. Wrestling has
traditionally been a male-dominated sport,
especially in the Middle East. And Bseiso's
entry into professional wrestling has been
path-breaking because while there have
been a few wrestlers from the Middle East
in the WWE in the past, there has never
been a female Arab representative. “I'm
thrilled to be the first Arab woman from
the Middle East to sign with WWE. The
feeling is incredible,” said Shadia.
Shadia was selected after she emerged
at the top in an invitation-only tryout
event in Dubai earlier this year. More
than 40 men and women from the Middle
East and India with diverse backgrounds
in sports and athletics had taken part in
the event. Among the sports enthusiasts
were powerlifters, rugby and football

players, amateur wrestlers, martial
artists and fitness experts.
Colourful career
Born in Jordan, Shadia attended
university in Lebanon before moving to
Dubai for her career in radio & television.
She worked as a TV, Radio and live-
events presenter at a Dubai-based media
organisation. “I have even presented a
radio show for Gulf Air about four years
ago. It was a fun experience,” says
Shadia. However, life had something
else in store for her. In 2013, Shadia
joined Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes and that
became her passion. Today she is a blue
belt in the sport and has added crossfit
to her training routine. Shadia believes
that jiu-jitsu has helped her a lot to stay
fit to compete at an international level.
“I have been training and competing
in Brazilian jiu-jitsu for four years. The
WWE Dubai tryouts were very physically
demanding, I felt like my jiu-jitsu and
crossfit training helped me get through
the tryout ” said Shadia.

Supporting family
A supportive family by her side has been
an added advantage for Shadia and she
is not the only athlete in her family. She
is the younger sister of Arifa Bseiso, a
national-boxing champion. “I am blessed
to have such a supportive family. I was
so excited to get the call from WWE and
I flew to Jordan to share the news with
my family” shares Shadia.
Shadia is also proud that women from the
Middle East have started representing their
country at various levels. The women are
overcoming social, political and religious
barriers to assert their right to sporting
life and by doing so breaking taboos and
defying traditional gender stereotypes.
“The sky's is the limit. You just have to take
the first step,” adds Shadia.
WWE Live in Abu Dhabi
Following overwhelming demand from the
large, passionate fan base in the region,
WWE will be live in Abu Dhabi on December
7th at Zayed Sport City, Tennis Stadium.
“This will be my very first WWE live event
since I signed my developmental contract,
and it means I’ll be watching the show from
an entirely different perspective as a future
WWE performer myself,” said Shadia. Fans
can look forward to a spectacular show of
non-stop, family friendly entertainment for
WWE’s only Abu Dhabi show this year.
