Incorporating suggestions from many of its travellers, Biman has the most creative menu you’ll find in the air. For the
outbound flight from Dhaka, all the foods are carefully prepared by the Biman Flight Catering Centre (BFCC). BFCC proudly

the best way is to come in one’s own

There is also a 9th century fort in the

For a history buff, Puthia is a beautiful town.
It was named after the Puthia Raj family
in the 16th century. A 25-km drive from
Rajshahi division will land you in a complex
of ancient temples and palaces, which was
built by the same family. As it is a small

By this, Bangabandhu managed to won
the hearts of millions of his people, inside
and outside the country. His courage,
fearlessness and steadfast devotion to the
cause of his people is always remembered
by the people of this nation.
December 16 is no longer just another
government holiday, today it has turned into
a festival, referred to as the Victory Festival,
and is celebrated across the nation with
great enthusiasm.
In the initial days of the country gaining
Independence, the government was in
charge of the Victory Day celebrations.
Back in those days, the day began with
the sound of cannons fired in the honour
of the freedom fighters who sacrificed
their life for the glory of the nation. The
whole country would get brilliantly lit
up with lights. Celebratory programmes
were organised too.
What used to be a day rooted in culture,
reserved primarily for the intellectual
middle-class, has today transformed into
a mass celebration. Preparations for the
Victory Day now begin way in advance, with
the markets overflowing with red and green

with flowers of various kinds, so exotic
flowers need to be sourced from all over the

That's not all. Newspapers and TV channels
get busy printing and telecasting special

irrespective of their gender, age or social
status, flock to the streets. A palpable
atmosphere of festivity surrounds the entire
nation for weeks.
Though December 16 is an official holiday,
citizens along with President Abdul

representatives of political, social and
cultural institutions join the memorial
programme. The event commences by
honouring the freedom fighters who lost
their lives in the struggle of Independence
and concludes with people heading towards
the Rajpath in huge numbers. Citizens from
all walks of life deck themselves up in red
and green colour and unite in the spirit of
brotherhood by taking part in the festivities
of the day. Every hand holds the national
flag with pride, fly pasts by Army aircraft
crisscross the sky and the streets come alive
with bright lights and patriotic songs.

kuakata is a
languorous
small town in southern Bangladesh, more
precisely in the Patuakhali district of Barisal.
It lies nestled between the Bay of Bengal, the
island of Bhola and the nearby offshoots
of the Sundarbans mangrove forest.
For its abundance of mostly
untouched natural beauty,
Bangladeshis call this well-loved
place as Shagor-Konna or the
‘daughter of the sea’.
The prime attraction of this 30-km-
long beach is the sunrise and the sunset.
There are many secluded spots with various
small rivulets and canals falling into the sea.
The coastline is dotted with patches of the
distinctly coastal ‘Jhau’ trees, each grove
called a separate Jhau-bon. Walk a bit and you

will see pristine patches of sand, with perhaps
a lonesome log of wood or an abandoned
boat. The boat is an exact replica of many
others you see plying the waters.
The air feels different here as if laden with the
sea’s salt and its allure. In the more commonly
visited patches of the beach, the very distinct
smell of dried fish tends to attack the
olfactory senses. The smell is quite welcoming
to most tourists, especially the domestic ones,
and many are seen happily buying their share
after sifting through mounds of it. The fish are
especially cured and favoured by most as a
delicacy, with each area having their own way
of preparing it.
Winters in Kuakata are pleasant. It is, in fact,
the best season to visit and enjoy the beauty
that lies mostly untouched by civilisation.
There are no glitzy shopping malls or plazas,
no wide thoroughfares and no hustle-and-
bustle of the larger cities. The few shops in
temporary-looking shacks line the beach
in the popular spots that have on offer
ornaments made of beads, shell and plastic,
and other products made of shells like hair
clips, décor and mirrors.
The eastern side of the beach is home to the
Gangamati Reserve Forest. It’s a torn off piece
of the famed Sundarbans, which used to cover
the area. The forest has now receded away
significantly towards the west into Khulna.

There is also a significant community of Rakhine
people in Kuakata, who settled here a few
hundred years ago. It is said that the well-
digging activities by the Rakhine gave the area
its name. As the name goes, Kua means well,
and Kata means dig. Some of those old wells
still have potable water. One can go and visit the
Rakhine settlement and also buy their brightly
patterned handwoven cloth as a souvenir to
take back home.
There is also a giant statue of the Buddha
in the Rakhine-Polli, as they are followers of
Buddhism. The old temple has been renovated
to house the 30-feet golden statue. Special
ceremonies are observed by the locals during
the Rash Purnima and Magh Purnima festivals
held on the day of full moon usually from
October to February. Thousands of devotees
flock the beach and perform religious activities
by the beach.

attraction. The city of Oxford dates back to
the early 12th century, having developed from
an ancient Saxon village.
The city also has other places to offer
from museums like the Ashmolean to the
famous Covered Market and loads of Alice

Museum, also called the The University of
Oxford’s museum of anthropology and world

of the special features of the museum is the

This famous arrangement allows visitors to

The Roman Theatre of Verulamium, a short

Paris– is a denim
kind of girl, albeit a
very singular one.
The
world of luxe sophistication
stays alive on a non-stop flow of
creative ideas. After all, this is what makes life
absolute fun, exciting and rewarding. The one
luxury accessory item where it’s most applied

turnaround in its overall design aesthetic.
So, the designer responsible

embroidered with the logos of

and other vibrant and cheeky art
forms is a Paris-based luxury clutch
designer Carole Tessier whose
eponymous label 'Preciously Paris'
seems to have taken everybody by surprise.
Tessier’s first stint happened to be working
as an interior designer because she had been
passionate about digging into the artisanal
practices in France, leading her to study design

wearing them during Art Basel Miami Beach.
People liked my jeans so much that I started
getting personal orders to customise their
denim collections,” she says.
Although, this business model had the
potential to grow, Tessier’s heart and soul
wasn’t allowing her to get into it. Rather,
she was looking for something grand to get
involved in. That’s how the idea of designing
clutches dawned on her. She says, “You
reveal yourself through your handbags or
clutches. You may be considered a serious,
classic, funny, luxurious, or original woman.
This is the ultimate fashion accessory for a
woman.” All her creations are handmade,
which she believes, is a rare thing to find out
in today’s world. Therefore, things that make
Tessier’s designed clutches unique enough

62. to stand out are primarily due to her use of
traditional embroidery techniques with a funny
and arty spirit. Tessier’s inspiration for all this big
stuff essentially comes from her travels and the
contemporary art exhibitions she keeps visiting.
“I designed clutches with different countries’
bank notes carved into them in order to relive
that moment when I first travelled to those
amazing places,” she says.
Tessier clutches are symbolic of luxury fabrics
that go into the making of them. “I use
Japanese denim, satin and silk velvet. I also
collaborate with Toyen Sellers to develop
handmade fabrics exclusively for my product
line,” she says, adding, “When it comes to
collecting rock crystals, I look nowhere but
the famous Goossens company in Paris.”
Every collection of Tessier is aimed at telling
some sort of fascinating story that women
out there could relate to. Her precious
creations serve to uplift the lifestyle of jet-
set women who love handmade products
as well as appreciate the quality craft.
Unsurprisingly, famous celebs and women
bloggers have been spotted carrying
Tessier’s clutches.

From
roasted corn
cheesecake to matcha
tea mousse and bacon ice-cream to
mushroom mille-feuille, unusual desserts
are common now. Vegetables, fruits,
spices and even savoury non-vegetarian
elements are being incorporated in
desserts these days. Chefs are thus playing
with ingredients as never before – some
basic, seemingly mundane and others
unconventional and unusual.
Chef Vivek Kadam, Pastry Chef, explains,
“While getting the classics right is great,
sometimes experimenting can lead to
brilliant new combinations that offer guests
a unique culinary experience. We look for
ingredients that can best complement
each other to give a perfectly balanced
amalgamation of flavour, taste and quirk.”

introducing the quirky ingredient as
a flavour in the whole dessert or try
bringing in an element of surprise as a
part of the main dessert if the experiment
is too bold.”
Veggies and fruits galore
Who thought veggies would make their
way into lip-smacking desserts. Well,
chefs are unleashing their creativity and
picking up vegetables for desserts too.
Carrots have long been used in cupcakes
and even cheese cakes, but now, beetroot
has caught the fancy of chefs. Cookies,
brownies, cakes and halwa alike are being
made using beetroot. It is the colour that
usually attract chefs and diners. From
beetroot and apple doughnuts, beetroot
tarts and pudding, the list is endless. Sweet
potato may not exactly be a popular tuber,
yet, it is sought after by chefs and that too
for desserts. It is camouflaged in a manner
that guests cannot even guess the main
ingredient in a dessert.
The subtle and nutty flavours of parsnip
along with its inherent sweetness are
suddenly being explored by chefs across the

myriad desserts. Combining spices,
hung curd or zesty lemon flavours
along with parsnip, enhances its flavours and
chefs are going all out. Avocado, a fruit with
a subtle taste and creamy texture is also a
part of a chef’s repertoire now for desserts.
This fruit seamlessly meshes with chocolate,
giving a velvety texture to the mousse or
even puddings, yogurt and tarts. It works
well with coconut, pistachios, as it does with
other fresh fruits, especially berries.
Using tea
Matcha or powdered green tea, with its
luminescent emerald colour, lends its hue
to many desserts from macarons to tea
cakes and from crème brulee to brownies.
Dark chocolate matcha cake, matcha
dusted chocolate truffles, matcha oreo
brownies, are typical favourites. Chocolate
pairs well with the earthy flavoured
matcha green tea, according to chefs.
