1. CLIL in Luxembourg
In Luxembourg, the practice of CLIL has a long history, it was introduced in 1844. It starts early (at
age eight, first in German then also in French) and is the rule, not the exception. CLIL is offered to all
students and used in all science and social science subjects. With the exception of the International
School and the European School however, English is only taught as a language. A couple of years ago,
the Ministry of Education proposed to teach science courses in English, but most of the teachers
were very reluctant to do so, since their English usually isn’t as good as their German or French. At
the moment, the national curriculum proposes the use of documents in English in some classes, but
these texts are commented on in French or German. One may hope that through projects like these,
some of our teachers will become a little more self-confident and dare use their English even if it is
not on the same very high level as their German or French.
