The document provides an analysis of the opening scenes of the film "Drive". It summarizes that the main character, played by Ryan Gosling, is seen driving at night in a mysterious manner, carrying a bag and leaving it in a run-down apartment. His solitary and serious demeanor suggest he is a secretive person possibly engaged in dangerous activities or being followed. The opening credits are subtle and contrasting to set the dark, mysterious tone that establishes the crime drama genre of the film.
2. Enigma
The enigma in the film `Drive` is a unknown character
driving a car, the enigma here is what the man does for
a living and is about to do because the dark and
mysterious setting at night could give unsure ideas
about his personnel. Another enigma is the bag he is
carrying with him. The reason for this is because he
keeps it very close to him, and then leaves it in a
secured location. This could mean the bag could be
carrying something dangerous. Another enigma is the
birds eye view of his car which could give the idea of
not knowing where he is going, and also someone is
keeping an eye on where he is going at all times.
3. Location
The location in the opening scene is of a highly
populated city with many large offices and tall
buildings indicating a working class area. The
other location in the scene is of a one
bedroom apartment that he leaves his bag in.
It also looks like a run down apartment that he
must very rarely use which links to the
enigma.
4. Themes
The theme in the opening scene is very mysterious
because of the dark setting which accompanies
very few shots of him showing us he is a secretive
character. He also appears very serious which
means he may be wanting to get something
done, or is in the process of doing something.
This shots of him in his car tell us he is always on
the move which could mean he is a wanted man
and could be being followed, so he needs to keep
moving. This links to the genre as it is a element
of unknown which gives the sense of danger.
5. Opening credits
The credits for this trailer fade in and out this
makes them subtle and they don’t really distract
you from what’s happening in the film.
They are pink which contrast with the dark back
ground which make them noticeable and clear to
see. The colour of the titles don’t match the
genre because the film is a crime drama and you
wouldn’t normally think the colour pink would go
well with it.
6. Establishing key characters
We find out that the main character is Ryan Gosling as
his name comes up first during the credits and just
after his name fades out a shot of him appears in a
car. We don’t see any other characters during the
opening, it is mainly him in his car and shots of the
scenery around him. This could show that he doesn't
like other people knowing things about him or is
trying to get away from someone. This makes him
more mysterious, then as an audience you want to
find out more about him and what it is he is driving
away from.
7. Sound
The sound used in the opening is understated.
You don’t really take much notice of it because
it isn’t really that loud, it keeps you focused on
what’s going on in the film and doesn't
distracted you.
8. Genre
We can tell that the genre is going to be crime/
drama /action film to do with car driving, as
the setting is dark and because we only see
one character and the location all the way
through the opening we can assume he his
trying to get away from something or
someone. He also might not want anyone to
know where he is going.
