1. Media homework – Race (Echoes magazine)
1) To a far extent that I agree that the majority of performers featured on the
front cover of the Echoes magazine is definitely more focused on men as
there is a wider variety of male artists used in the magazine than women.
This may be because there are more black male performers in
comparison to women as black music tend to be stereotyped as the R&B,
hip-hop, rap music culture and mostly men are artists in that specific
category in music.
2) Although only to some extent do I agree they use muscular, tall, dark-
skinned men to feature in their magazine because they use people like
Calvin Richardson, Cody Chestnut and Xzibit who fit into that description.
They are mostly used as that is probably what black guys stereotypically
look up to and aspire to be or look like. Although in some cases they do
use light-skinned guys such as Drake to have a wider variety. Most of the
women used are light-skinned as it gives a more feminine look to them
which may attract guy readers.
3) The magazine does not include any other people in the backgrounds of
the male main features (e.g. girls). Although I believe that the content
inside may include some women in the background with male artists. I do
agree that they use them as props to show success or wealth as the more
girls you have, the more of a ‘pimp’ you are which means more money
and bling. The girls can represent the man’s control and dominance over
them.
4) Some male artists on the front cover of Echoes wore really big, flashy
jewellery which look very expensive. Therefore I believe it’s true that they
add emphasize on rebellious or on visible material wealth. The more bling
the person has on, the more copies will be sold as rap artists etc. normally
wear lots of jewellery.
5) I do not believe this statement is true as most of their postures are of them
looking away but not in an anger sort of way.
