2. CONSUMER SOCIETY
This Individualistic, consumption-oriented, colonial society, an imitation
of American society
This condition has been abetted by the cultural influences and the
agencies that work towards our miseducation.
Among the masses, apathy is the result of ignorance as well as of acute
economic deprivation.
The bonds that linked us together as a nation has been replaced by the
demands of self-interest
But many of those societies still retain a residue of their old values. We,
on the other hand
Ours has been a long history of national erosion brought about by
colonialism.
3. ALIENATION OF THE FILIPINO
lack of a common central purpose, the absence of real national goals,
our addiction to habits of dependence
The Filipino has become alienated not only from society but also from
himself.
This is cause of our present attitude toward crime and criminals.
The people who have seen misery all around them, who themselves are
victims of poverty and misery, are now used to the daily toll of lives taken
by criminal hands.
The more crimes are committed, the more the non-criminal population
retreats into strictly individualistic means of protecting themselves and
their families.
Killing, raping, and stealing are not normal but they are already regarded
as a normal occurrence because society today is in complete disarray.
4. MEANINGLESS REBELLION OF THE YOUNG
In an adult society that flouts every moral principle in hypocritically
mouths, the young are bound to feel alienated.
They lose themselves in a pursuit of self-indulgence in ways copied from
a culture they regard as superior and advanced.
Long Hair was a sign of protest among the youth in the United States
because it signified defiance of the draft.
As such, it became part of the anti-war movement of the young.
Actually, long hair is a sign of conformism with the Western
establishment.
When our society acquires the correct values – and it cannot do this
without purging itself of this stupid obsession
5. EMERGENCE OF SUB-GROUPS
The rapidly deteriorating social structure is giving rise to the formation of
sub-societies.
The social values that were valid for a simple agricultural society of the
past are in continuous clash with the values spawned by the growing
Westernization of the country
Thus we see the proliferation of gangs and we are discerning the
beginnings of warlordism in various provinces.
This personal gratification is achieved by securing a place in the
hierarchy of political power.
Politicians whose principal goal is the purely personal one of retaining
power depend on sub-groups to secure their tenure by fair means or
foul.
When citizens see the cynicism of their leaders, when they are fully
aware of the corruption of their officials, society can no longer control the
direction of its affairs.
6. IDEOLOGY OF SELF-INTEREST
The constant deterioration of our society has been accompanied by the
popular adoption of the ideology of self-interest.
The obsession with the pursuit of private gain has become an
institutional imperative of a society whose traditional institutions are in
the process of collapse.
In business, the pursuit of private gain at the expense of the public has
become the rationale for expansion and growth.
We have lost that affection for our country so necessary for our survival
because we have lost our affection of our fellowmen as human beings
with the potentiality for culture and a meaningful life.
Clearly, the constricted goals of a colonial people must be replaced by
the broader goals of a free and inspired people who would be willing to
embrace a more austere but more meaningful life.
The criminal, instead of being hunted, is now ensconced in the
comfortable seats of power.
