My Interpretation Of The Battle Of Gettysburg
My interpretation of the battle of Gettysburg began forming two years ago when I visited the grounds that 51,000 men had died on. It was a hot
summer day; I was tired, hungry, sick of walking, and was wondering if this very long field trip would ever end. The men that fought on this battle
field felt the same way during the summer of 1863. From reading Killer Angels and The Pickett's Charge Nobody Knows, I have a much better
perception and understanding of what actually happened during the war. Before my readings, I thought there were the good guys who won and the
bad guys who lost. I now understand on a deeper level what those men on both sides of the battle field were going through, and that they were men
of God that were not only fighting for what they believed in but also for each other. Killer Angels is a particularly moving novel that is told from
alternating points of view of several important men that played major roles during this war. Michael Sharra taught me what it would actually be like
to be a soldier during the Civil War. Sharra provides many detailed maps of both army 's positions, which gave me a better idea of where the men were
posted, where they were headed, and which rout of attack the generals had their men on. Throughout the book I was shown the pain that these men
went through, how loyal these men were to their duty, and how important each decision that each general made on the battle field truly was. The battle
that these men fought makes more

Battle of Gettysburg Day 3
The Battle of Gettysburg is widely known as the largest battle of the American Civil War. This crucial battle occurred over three days, July 1st to July
3, 1863 surrounding the town of Gettysburg. In this battle, General Robert E. Lee tactfully awaited the forces of General Meade's Union. On July 1st
the Confederates were exploited by the Union resulting in a loss. The following day, the Confederates gained ground by conducting an assault on
Union's left flank. These concurring events would lead to July 3rd which resulted in bloody massacre of the Confederate's and a tragic loss. The Battle
of Gettysburg Day 3 is a demonstration of the importance of decision making, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The attack would consist of a massive cannonade "aimed at suppressing Union artillery and hammering Union infantry at the intended point of attack."
However, the Union assaulted Longstreet before dawn creating disruption in Lee's plan. This produced a stalemate allowing Meade to focus on
Cemetery Ridge. Later in the afternoon, the Confederate continued to use massive artillery power, but the Union was not threatened. They soon
expended their ammunition after an attack across the open field.
General Robert E. Lee's poor decision making can be examined from different angles. His hasty assumptions led to the exploitation of their offense.
He assumed that the Union's defense would be weakened due to previous battle engagement. He weakened their capabilities, and armed support.
According to sources "The plan was anchored in the premise that Union generals would not command well and Union troops would not fight well."
His close mindedness disabled him to assess the entirety of the situation. His initiative to win and quickly diminish the Union influenced his decision
making. Physiologist reported that Lee's decision making resulted from "Napoleonic thinking: Napoleonic thinking: to gain and exploit, by fast
maneuver and concentration, an advantage at a critical time and place despite lacking favorable terms overall." He swiftly continued with a process
that logistically could not be supported. He failed to lessen the risks.

Gettysburg Vs Gettysburg
In 1863 after Abraham Lincoln became president, many battles were fought between the Unions and the Confederates. During the civil war, the two of
the most important historical battles in 1863 were fought in Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Both battles impacted the civil war and as a result of the North's
victory, we are left wondering which battle is the most important. Vicksburg was without doubt an important aspect of history, however compared to the
war in Gettysburg, Gettysburg was defiantly the most important during the war in 1863 for several reasons. The war in Gettysburg was more important
than Vicksburg because the battle caused more suffering by comparison, it was most known for being a turning point in the battle after theGettysburg
address speech, and Gettysburg's victory in policies resulted from the Gettysburg address speech. In comparison, the war in Gettysburg caused more
suffering to the Unions and Confederates than Vicksburg. Both the Union and Confederates faced a large amount of deaths, wounded, missing and
captured soldiers. According to ourdocuments.gov, "At the end of the Battle of Gettysburg, more than 51,000 Confederate and Union soldiers were
wounded, missing, or dead." (Gettysburg Address (1863)). In the article, Gettysburg faced above the estimate amount of 51,000 causalities. According

Why Is Gettysburg Important
It is widely regarded that the Battle of Gettysburg is the most significant battle in the American Civil War. What made the Battle of Gettysburg so
significant? I believe the main reason why it's considered to be the most significant battle is the effects and the changes it brought to the American Civil
War. The reasons I believe this is because of how this battle literally changed the momentum of the war swaying it to the Union's favor and eventually
allowing the Union to defeat the Confederates, thus winning the American Civil War.
In order to answer this question, we must first look at the context, background information, the war itself and some information on what was happening
around the time of the battle and the build up to the battle. It was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lee crossed the Potomac River into Philadelphia in an attempt to take crucial land that would almost certainly sway the war heavily into the
Confederates favor. Upon hearing this news, the Union led by General George G. Meade, would respond against Lee's attack by marching off to
confront the Confederate's army. On June 30th, the day before the battle, a brigade of Confederate soldiers approached the town of Gettysburg in
search of supplies. The next event would start the preparation for battle as the Confederate's commander looked through his field glasses only to see a
Union cavalry heading towards Gettysburg. Upon seeing this George G. Meade would inform his superior, General A.P. Hill, saying that he would get
the supplies in the morning.
It was July 1st, 1863, the day when the most significant battle in the American Civil War happened, TheBattle of Gettysburg. Once General Robert E.

One of the most epic battles of the Civil War occurred at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in July of 1863. This battle was arguably the turning point of the
war for the Union Army and signaled the beginning of the end for the Confederate Army. Over the course of what follows, the events leading up to the
battle, an overview of the battle, and subsequent results of the battle will be examined.
By the end of June 1863, Lee's army was in high spirits and in need of supplies after the battle of Chancellorsville . To achieve multiple objectives,
Lee decided to move his army north into Pennsylvania (Gettysburg Facts & Resources, 2014). Lee targeted the area outside of Gettysburg because it
had an abundance of tanneries, which could provide his army with much needed footwear, and the area also had an abundance of other resources.
Strategically, Lee also felt that attacking and winning a major battle in the north would increase the morale of his troops, deal a harsh blow to the
morale of northerners, and present an opportunity to obtain supplies (Gettysburg Facts & Resources, 2014).
As General Robert E. Lee lead the Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania, GeneralJoseph Hooker began moving the Army of the Potomac across
Maryland and into Pennsylvania in order to engage Lee, protect Washington, and attempt to repel

The Long Road Of Gettysburg
The Long Road To Gettysburg Jim Murphy wrote a book called the Long Road To Gettysburg. It is a nonfiction book. It has 109 pages. The two
main characters are General Robert E. Lee for the South and General Meade for the North. Other minor characters include General Joseph Hooker of
the North and General John Dooley of the South. This book teaches you the Horrors of Gettysburg. The theme is violence is never the answer. In the
beginning it all started with an idea that Robert E lee proposed. It stated that they spring a surprise attack in Pennsylvania. Everybody agreed to this
idea because all the battles before had happened on southern soil. So, they started marching.THey marched about 10 miles each day. They did this for
about 8 days. They marched From Virginia to Pennsylvania. The North found out about the planned attack and began to march towards the South. They
eventually met up in a small farm town in Pennsylvania called Gettysburg. This would later be the same soil in which 40,000 Americans lay wounded

The Battle Of The Gettysburg
Today, the Battle of Gettysburg is considered one of the most important battles of the American Civil War. However, with 23,049 casualties on the
Union side and 28,063 on the Confederate side, it can also be considered one of the bloodiest (Civil War Trust). Such heavy losses naturally rattled the
entire nation and Americans on both sides began to question the war and what it stood for. As Americans gathered together at the consecration
ceremony of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, the much acclaimed orator and politician Edward Everett delivered what was meant to be the
Gettysburg Address. Yet, today, it is not Edward Everett's Gettysburg Address that the world remembers, butAbraham Lincoln's, who was invited to the
ceremony almost as an afterthought. Lincoln's 272 words helped remake America by giving hope to its citizens at a time when they were at their lowest.
For Everett, the Battle of Gettysburg was a parallel to the ancient Battle of Marathon and his moment up on the stage delivering his Address was his
"Pericles moment." The nineteenth century was a time of Greek revival for America, a time when America came to be considered the second Athens.
This Greek revival manifested itself in everything from architecture to courses at universities, but perhaps most importantly, in orations at the time.
Everett played a significant role in this Greek revival as he was not only a Greek scholar but also a proponent of classicism. With his Gettysburg
Address, Everett hoped to

shots were fired no long after daylight, so to be exact, it was 04:30 hours, on the morning of July 1st, (49 Nofi). Bullets flew from the rifles of Union
Calvary men on picket duty along the
Chambersburg Pike. It was in response to the advancing of Confederates, a skirmish line of 2,500 led by Henry Keith, a General that graduated last in

This decision was based on an inaccurate understanding of his enemy's position and strength. The Battle plan ran against his position of always having
the best ground or terrain from which to fight. Not only was General Lee misinformed, but his soldiers were fighting barefoot, hungry, and low on
ammunition, due to the naval blockade imposed by Union naval forces. The Northern war effort benefited tremendously from its superior naval forces,
which allowed the Union to implement and maintain an effective blockade of Southern ports2. The South was an agricultural society and the North

The Union Army had infinitely more supplies all through the war than the South, due to the North being a heavy industrial and manufacturing center. A
derivative of the North's success of the civil war was their abundance of materials needed for proper warfare. Their soldiers were well prepared in terms
of ammunition, nutrition, and clothing where as the south was not well equipped at all. Unfortunately for the South, the North positioned its naval
ships to block foreign supplies and trade; in hopes to starve out the confederate Army, whom were already suffering. This was detrimental to the South,
due to already problematic transportation problems. The train rail system in the South at this point had different sizing and regulation per state, making

Gettysburg Address is one of the important dictations of values that provided much needed direction for the future leadership of the United States. It
shaped the societal values and beliefs of the country. This assertion can be affirmed with the speech 's enduring presence in the US culture.
Notwithstanding its noticeable place cut into stone units on the south divider of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., theGettysburg Address is

The Text of the Gettysburg Address
Soon after Everett 's overall–appropriated comments, Lincoln gave his address that lasted only a couple of minutes. In this short time, he used ten
sentences to aptly summarize the war and the way ahead for the United States.
The five known composition copies of the Gettysburg Address are named for the individuals who obtained it from Lincoln. Lincoln provides a copy
to his private secretaries, John Hay and John Nicolay. Both of the aforementioned copies were composed around the time of his November 19
address, while the other three duplicates of the speech, the Bliss, Bancroft, and Everett duplicates, and were composed by President Lincoln for
philanthropic purposes. These copies were sent well later to November 19, the actual date of the famous address. Since then these copies have ended
up being the standard content of Lincoln 's Gettysburg Address (LoC, 2012).
Both the Nicolay and Hay duplicates of the Address are inside the Library of Congress. It is enclosed in exceptionally manufactured,
temperature–regulated; argon gas filled and sealed containers. The idea is to ensure that the original copy is safe from gradual continued deterioration
and oxidation (LoC, 2012).

The Battle Of Gettysburg As My Topic
For the Historical Newspaper Analysis paper, I selected the Battle of Gettysburg as my topic to research. The reason I appointed this event as my
subject matter was on the fact that I reside close to Gettysburg, and have heard of some of the events that developed there during the Civil War. Even
though I live close to Gettysburg, I haven't seen the reenactments that occur there or been on the tours Gettysburg offers. Since I would like to take
part in a tour along with seeing the reenactments, I figured it would be helpful to gain a broader understanding of the events that transpired there before
I visit Gettysburg to engage in the festivities. Accordingly, this is why I elected theBattle of Gettysburg as my topic. The tones of the articles that I
reviewed for the Battle of Gettysburg were mostly positive and informative. After examining many Baltimore Sun Newspaper articles, I noticed that the
articles stayed considerable positive by transforming negative situations into positive ones. For example, an article titled "The Battle of Gettysburg"
declared that "General Reynolds, it seems more and more clear, fought rashly on Wednesday, and very probably against the wishes of the commander
of the army; yet this battle, which lost us many men, gave us full information of the whereabouts of the enemy's main body, and committed the enemy
to the position the north of Gettysburg." The author of this article took the negative event of many men losing their lives during battle, and

Essay On The Battle Of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important battles, if not the most important battle from the Civil War. The Civil War was fought from
1861 to 1865 between the Union and the Confederate States of America. The Union was mainly made up of Northern states while the Confederate
States of America was mainly Southern states who had seceded from the nation. The Battle of Gettysburg took place right in the middle of war in
1863, and was one of the bloodiest ever. The battle took place in the 3rd year of the war, during the beginning of July on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd . The
war would continue for another 2 years and eventually, the Union would end up winning. The Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point in the
war because of the amount of casualties that the armies suffered, and since it was a major win and morale boost for the Union army.
To begin with, the Battle Gettysburg was one of the most brutal and bloody battles in the war. The amount of casualties that both sides suffered was
unreal and insanely high. These casualties cost both armies a big chunk of men for the armies but it hurt the Confederate army more. In Document B
it states the total casualties for the Union army was 23,040 which was 27% of their army, while for the Confederate army it was between 20,650 and
25,000 men which was 30–34% of their army at Gettysburg. The Confederate army lost almost one–third of their army which attended Gettysburg and
this would turn out to have serious consequences for them. The Union army also lost a lot of men, but it wasn't an as big percent of their army.
Furthermore, in map B it compares the Gettysburg casualties to the overall troops and men avalaible for both armies. It states the casualties for the
Union army which was 23,040 compared to the total size of the army, which was 918,000 and title men of military age which was 6 million. The
casualties at the Battle of Gettysburg, don't seem as bad and it doesn't seem like its an as big chunk of the army. The Confederate Army on the other
hand suffered major losses. The total size of their army on December, 1863 was 278,000 and that total men of military age was only 1.2 million. The
Union had a little under 650,000 more troops than the Confederate

Confederacy had 2600 to 4500 deaths, during the battle they also had 12800 wounded, and 5,250 missing men.
Lastly the Gettysburg Address was one of the main turning points in the war. In Document D Lincoln talks about how the soldiers on the battlefield

Structure Of The Gettysburg Address
Abraham Lincoln was president of the United States and in office during the Civil War, during this war the North and South were at odds and much
blood was shed. The Battle of Gettysburg was particularly gruesome, but none the less a major win for the Union. Immediately after the battle,
Lincoln was invited to speak on behalf of all fallen soldiers and on the victory that the Union so desperately needed. The Gettysburg Address
motivated the American people to persevere and continue fighting the Confederacy in order to free the slaves and make the country whole again. An
address such as this one gave the broken down people of America new hope, a fire once again lit in their hearts to continue and push on. The

Not only did this device provoke sympathy from the citizens, but it also rekindled their want to fight and persevere for those who do not have a
voice and for those who lost their lives protecting the belief that all men are equal. It is clear that Lincoln is using this device when he states, " A final
resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live". A touching statement such as this one appeals to the human side of the
audience members, thus causing them to feel as if it is their duty to continue with high spirits in such a treacherous war. Another rhetorical device
employed by Lincoln is his use of inclusive language. For instance, the continuous utilization of the word "we", was no mistake. This is meant to
create a sense of unity and camaraderie between all people in the United States, not just the Confederacy or the Union. In order to sufficiently motivate
and uplift the American people Lincoln used these persuasive techniques. One can obviously see how this has paid off by how highly regarded the
speech still is over 150 years later.
Lincoln not only uses pathos to ensure that his point is understood but he also uses the rhetorical device anaphora. Anaphora is the repetition of the
same words or phrase at the beginning of a sentence. Evidence of anaphora can be seen in lines 9 and 10 of The Gettysburg Address, "we can not

The Impact of the Gettysburg Address on the United States
The speech we now know as the Gettysburg Address was given to consecrate the fallen soldiers in the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. It is known as
one of the most influential speeches ever and has been recognized in hindsight as pivotal in the outcome of the war. Its brevity and poetry emphasized
America's original dream, the importance of equality, and the opportunity for a new birth of freedom, a message which continues to be of relevance
today.
The Gettysburg Address was powerful because each word was thought out and was meaningful to Lincoln. It was on November 19, 1863, when
Lincoln delivered the speech after the battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Gettysburg was the most demoralizing battle of the Civil war between the
Union and the Confederacy, with over 50,000 casualties in just three days. Lincoln spoke at the ceremonies honoring the brave Union soldiers after
Edward Everett, a famous orator who spoke for two hours. In contrast Lincoln captivated his crowd for just over two minutes with a mere 272
words. He was concise and to the point while also poetic. Everett is known to have sent Lincoln a letter after the ceremony that said; "I should be
glad, if I could flatter myself that I came as near to the central idea of the occasion, in two hours, as you did in two minutes." Lincoln repeated words
that he wanted to emphasize; we, dedicated, and nation. He stressed these words to make his message clearer.

THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG In the late spring of 1863, the Civil War had been happening for about two years. Robert E. Lee, the Confederate
General, had just won a battle against a Brigade that was double the size of his own unit. The next step was to travel and invade the North. This step
was already approved by Jefferson Davis, the Confederate States of America's president. President Lincoln appointed George Meade as the
commander of the Union Army of the Potomac, while one of Lincoln's best generals was starting a siege in Mississippi, on June 27, 1863. Only four
days after, the Union was confronted by the Confederates in a small town near southern Pennsylvania known as Gettysburg. The battle at Gettysburg is
often known as the turning point of the Civil War, because at this battle the Union gained the upper hand in campaigns, casualties, and morale. The

The Battle Of Gettysburg At Gettysburg
Over the last 153 years Gettysburg, has moved from honoring those who fought and died during the battle at Gettysburg to preserve the battlefield.
Gettysburg went through two phases of change. The first phase happened between 1863 –1938 and the second phase happened in 1938 when the War
Department transferred the administration of Gettysburg to the National Park Service. During the first phase the National Cemetery was built in
Gettysburg for the creation of a proper burial of their now dead sons, brothers, and husbands. David Wills, a local attorney, purchased twelve acres
on behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the creation of a proper burial of their now dead sons, brothers, or husbands. Wills selected
the high ground of Cemetery Hill, a key piece of terrain that had figured prominently as part of the union battle line. After the National Cemetery
was built a veteran of the Union Army and now New York Representative Daniel E. Sickles introduced a bill to congress. On December 06, 1984
Daniel Sickles, introduced H.R. 8096 with little debate on February 11, 1895 Congress approved an act to establish a National Military Park at
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Popularly called the Sickles Bill, this legislation established the federal park boundary at 3,331.5 acres. The Gettysburg

Living in close proximity to Gettysburg, I have spent many weekends of my childhood hiking through the numerous acres of woods on Culp's Hill,

what Gettysburg has to offer. However, why is Gettysburg so important to us all as Americans? What made thissmall town so famous that tens of

fields that Union and Confederate soldiers fought on some one hundred and forty years ago, I asked myself why this place was so significant. ... Show

The next question I asked Mr. Kise focused on why the victory at Gettysburg was so very pivotal to the Union. In my own analysis of the battle, I did
not expect the answer that I received from him. He said that in his "own personal opinion of what makes Gettysburg so important, is Lincoln's speech
four months after the battle" (Kise). He goes on to explain that even though the Union Army won a substantial victory at Gettysburg and helped to turn
back the invading Confederate Army, it was when Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address that gave the battle meaning. Lincoln turned the war from
"merely holding the Union together, to giving a 'new birth of freedom'" (Kise).
My next question for Mr. Kise is probably the most asked question of the battle of Gettysburg. I wanted to know what would have occurred if the
Confederacy had won the battle. Mr. Kise came to the conclusion that Lee "would have had to withdraw eventually" due to the fact that he did not
have many supplies left and he had lost almost a third of his army (Kise). He also argues that "the North, with its superior transportation system, could
have quickly brought up other troops" (Kise). In all, Mr. Kise felt that Gettysburg was indeed a key battle for the Union in that the Army of the
Potomac was victorious. However, there were other factors that made it such a key battle as

The Battle of Gettysburg General William T. Sherman put it best when he said "War is Hell"( Foote 1 ). The Civil War was the largest war fought

were spent by the Confederate States to fund this war. Three days were spent in the month of July of 1863 in pure "hell." The largest battle of the
Civil War was fought near a small town in Pennsylvania. Over 50,000 lives were lost on battle grounds like Round Top, Little Round Top, the Peach

If the Federals took Vicksburg, the Mississippi River would be theirs and so would be the South. Vicksburg needed help, but got none. Lee had a plan
of his own, to invade Pennsylvania (The Civil War:Catton 206). Lee thought that an invasion of the North would help in many ways. First is that the
war was getting to the people in the North. The appearance of the Confederate Army would make that even worse. So much so that President Lincoln
might have to recognize the independence of the Confederate States. It might also bring the recognition of the British. Lee also needed food for his
army that could not be gained from the ravaged lands of Virginia. But the best reason for marching North was that the Army of the Potomac would
probably march toward Richmond again. The drive north would disrupt their plans and postpone the march on Richmond. But in simple laymans terms,
Lee's army was going to fight somewhere that summer, why not fight north of the Mason–Dixon line than south of it (Leckie 69). The
Commander–in–Chief of the United States, President Lincoln knew that Lee's advance would be an advantage for that Federals. So far the north has
fought with more men but in the south. Now they will fight with more men and on their own ground. Lee's army began to march on June 3. Hooker
began to move his men parallel to Lee's, keeping his army between Lee's and Washington, D.C. By the end of June, Lee had all his infantry and
artillery north of the Potomac River.

Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought by the largest number of soldiers, totaling 172,000 young men ("American Civil War"). During the Civil War,
our nation was divided by the North (Union Army) and the South (Confederate Army) for opposing viewpoints on slavery and states' rights. The Battle
of Gettysburg was fought over three long, arduous days. The soldiers struggled under their respected generals in a 25 mile battle zone ("American
Civil War"). This battle was a triumphant victory and a heart–wrenching loss for the troops of the Yankee North and Rebel South. The complexity of

On the other hand, the Confederates retained control of only Seminary Ridge. This setback for the South was likely the result of General Ewell's
failure to follow Lee's command (King 15– 17). Despite this, the Rebel's morale remained optimistic as they initiated the fighting on the following
morning (King 18). Union forces retaliated and saved their position until one of General Meade's commanders staged his own offensive battle
(Appleby, Joyce 486; King 22). This Union general was Dan Sickles. By moving his position without consulting General Meade, a "bulge" was
created. This foolish mistake allowed 1,600 Confederate soldiers to rush the Union line to overtake Peach Orchard, capturing 1,000 Yankee prisoners
(King 22). Another Union Army general, G.K. Warren, secured and protected a hill called Little Round Top before Confederates claimed it which
helped combat the loss from Sickle's blunder ("American Civil War"). At this point in the Battle of Gettysburg, both North and South sustained large
numbers of casualties. The Southern casualties roughly totaled 7,000 of 22,000 troops. The North suffered even more by losing 15,000 soldiers. Both
sides needed to re–evaluate their battle strategies. Lee thought victory for the South was possible with better timing and artillery. Conversely, Meade
and his other Union generals decided to stay in their current position and continue the battle (King 22). After dawn on July 3, 1863, Union soldiers

Gettysburg Simulation Game : The Battle Of Gettysburg Essay
Gettysburg Simulation Game The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important battles of the U.S. Civil War and one of the most important
battles of all the U.S. history. It was a battle between the Confederate Army of North Virginia, commanded by Robert E. Lee and the Union Army
of the Potomac under General George Meade. I played the Gettysburg Simulation Game on www.military.com. I really enjoyed it and thought it
was very interesting. I found it a great way to learn U.S. history. The simulation is based on historical maps. I noticed that it was very important to
know the different markings represent on the map. Opposing military forces were shown as different colored lines or dots. The longer and thicker
the line, it meant that they had more troops. The different colors on the map indicated there were higher or lower levels of elevation. White
represented the lowest ground and dark brown indicated the peaks of small hills. Ridges and hills were usually easier to defend and harder to attack.
The blue lines represented creeks. Roads were indicated by black lines and were important to keep open in order to receive supplies and
reinforcements. My first major decision in the simulation game I made was to strike the Union forces immediately and push south aggressively. I did
not want them to get further behind the Union lines. Several simultaneous attacks from the west pushed Union forces toward Cemetery Hill and
Cemetery Ridge, where they had stopped to regroup and

The Gettysburg Address Essay
The Gettysburg Address is one of the most famous speeches known by America. Jackie Fredericks states, "November 19, 1863––On this day, President
Abraham Lincoln gave a very short speech that is now one of the most famous in the English language." (Fredericks). This speech has many messages
throughout it. The message of unity and that we all need to be united as one. Acceptance, knowing that you who you are and others need to accept you
and you need to accept others. And death, realizing that it will happen and you cannot get away from it, be prepared, but live your life to the fullest.
There are three important messages from The Gettysburg Address, by Abraham Lincoln. The first message in The Gettysburg Address is unity. We are
all one country, one world, we should all be treated the same. Whites and blacks are equal, no discrimination. In The Gettysburg Address, Lincoln
states, "...We cannot dedicate– we cannot consecrate–we cannot hallow– this ground." (539). All he says is "we" as in one. All be united as one with no
problems, no one is better than anybody else. Graham D. Burnett states, "It is the unity of all forms of human knowledge, their imminent "jumping

"Acceptance can improve the quality of life and the lives of others." (Callen). If everyone accepted themselves and others, life would be amazing and
there would be no harm. In The Gettysburg Address, Lincoln states, "It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this." (539). The people are
accepting that those men have died and they will have a ceremony and then they will go on with their lives. They will accept what happened because it

The beginning of the campaign of Gettysburg began after Lee won in Chancellorsville. He knew that if the South were to win a decisive battle in the
North then European powers might shift in favor of the South and they might begin helping them. Lee also needed supplies and food for his army which
the North had plenty of.
Before Lee invaded though, he had to go to Richmond, Virginia and consult the President of the South, Jefferson Davis. It did not take much
convincing to get Jefferson Davis to believe that invading the North would be a smart and logical idea.

The battle between the retreating Union soldiers and the 3,500 men that Ewell sent ahead took place at Stephenson's Depot. This battle was fought

My Interpretation Of The Battle Of Gettysburg

  • 1. My Interpretation Of The Battle Of Gettysburg My interpretation of the battle of Gettysburg began forming two years ago when I visited the grounds that 51,000 men had died on. It was a hot summer day; I was tired, hungry, sick of walking, and was wondering if this very long field trip would ever end. The men that fought on this battle field felt the same way during the summer of 1863. From reading Killer Angels and The Pickett's Charge Nobody Knows, I have a much better perception and understanding of what actually happened during the war. Before my readings, I thought there were the good guys who won and the bad guys who lost. I now understand on a deeper level what those men on both sides of the battle field were going through, and that they were men of God that were not only fighting for what they believed in but also for each other. Killer Angels is a particularly moving novel that is told from alternating points of view of several important men that played major roles during this war. Michael Sharra taught me what it would actually be like to be a soldier during the Civil War. Sharra provides many detailed maps of both army 's positions, which gave me a better idea of where the men were posted, where they were headed, and which rout of attack the generals had their men on. Throughout the book I was shown the pain that these men went through, how loyal these men were to their duty, and how important each decision that each general made on the battle field truly was. The battle that these men fought makes more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Battle Of Gettysburg : Gettysburg Of The American Civil War ShaJuan Ervin Dr.Seamen MIS 303–01 2/24/16 Battle of Gettysburg Day 3 The Battle of Gettysburg is widely known as the largest battle of the American Civil War. This crucial battle occurred over three days, July 1st to July 3, 1863 surrounding the town of Gettysburg. In this battle, General Robert E. Lee tactfully awaited the forces of General Meade's Union. On July 1st the Confederates were exploited by the Union resulting in a loss. The following day, the Confederates gained ground by conducting an assault on Union's left flank. These concurring events would lead to July 3rd which resulted in bloody massacre of the Confederate's and a tragic loss. The Battle of Gettysburg Day 3 is a demonstration of the importance of decision making, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The attack would consist of a massive cannonade "aimed at suppressing Union artillery and hammering Union infantry at the intended point of attack." However, the Union assaulted Longstreet before dawn creating disruption in Lee's plan. This produced a stalemate allowing Meade to focus on Cemetery Ridge. Later in the afternoon, the Confederate continued to use massive artillery power, but the Union was not threatened. They soon expended their ammunition after an attack across the open field. General Robert E. Lee's poor decision making can be examined from different angles. His hasty assumptions led to the exploitation of their offense. He assumed that the Union's defense would be weakened due to previous battle engagement. He weakened their capabilities, and armed support. According to sources "The plan was anchored in the premise that Union generals would not command well and Union troops would not fight well." His close mindedness disabled him to assess the entirety of the situation. His initiative to win and quickly diminish the Union influenced his decision making. Physiologist reported that Lee's decision making resulted from "Napoleonic thinking: Napoleonic thinking: to gain and exploit, by fast maneuver and concentration, an advantage at a critical time and place despite lacking favorable terms overall." He swiftly continued with a process that logistically could not be supported. He failed to lessen the risks. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Gettysburg Vs Gettysburg In 1863 after Abraham Lincoln became president, many battles were fought between the Unions and the Confederates. During the civil war, the two of the most important historical battles in 1863 were fought in Gettysburg and Vicksburg. Both battles impacted the civil war and as a result of the North's victory, we are left wondering which battle is the most important. Vicksburg was without doubt an important aspect of history, however compared to the war in Gettysburg, Gettysburg was defiantly the most important during the war in 1863 for several reasons. The war in Gettysburg was more important than Vicksburg because the battle caused more suffering by comparison, it was most known for being a turning point in the battle after theGettysburg address speech, and Gettysburg's victory in policies resulted from the Gettysburg address speech. In comparison, the war in Gettysburg caused more suffering to the Unions and Confederates than Vicksburg. Both the Union and Confederates faced a large amount of deaths, wounded, missing and captured soldiers. According to ourdocuments.gov, "At the end of the Battle of Gettysburg, more than 51,000 Confederate and Union soldiers were wounded, missing, or dead." (Gettysburg Address (1863)). In the article, Gettysburg faced above the estimate amount of 51,000 causalities. According to nps.gov, "Estimated Casualties: 19,233 total (US 10,142; CS 9,091)", (Battle Summary: Vicksburg, MS., National Parks Service), Vicksburg faced a total amount of ... • 4. Why Is Gettysburg Important It is widely regarded that the Battle of Gettysburg is the most significant battle in the American Civil War. What made the Battle of Gettysburg so significant? I believe the main reason why it's considered to be the most significant battle is the effects and the changes it brought to the American Civil War. The reasons I believe this is because of how this battle literally changed the momentum of the war swaying it to the Union's favor and eventually allowing the Union to defeat the Confederates, thus winning the American Civil War. In order to answer this question, we must first look at the context, background information, the war itself and some information on what was happening around the time of the battle and the build up to the battle. It was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lee crossed the Potomac River into Philadelphia in an attempt to take crucial land that would almost certainly sway the war heavily into the Confederates favor. Upon hearing this news, the Union led by General George G. Meade, would respond against Lee's attack by marching off to confront the Confederate's army. On June 30th, the day before the battle, a brigade of Confederate soldiers approached the town of Gettysburg in search of supplies. The next event would start the preparation for battle as the Confederate's commander looked through his field glasses only to see a Union cavalry heading towards Gettysburg. Upon seeing this George G. Meade would inform his superior, General A.P. Hill, saying that he would get the supplies in the morning. It was July 1st, 1863, the day when the most significant battle in the American Civil War happened, TheBattle of Gettysburg. Once General Robert E. • 5. Gettysburg : Turning The Tide GETTYSBURG: TURNING THE TIDE Robert Harmon, Jr. American History to 1877 (HIST101) American Military University Dr. Kelly McMichael GETTYSBURG: TURNING THE TIDE One of the most epic battles of the Civil War occurred at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in July of 1863. This battle was arguably the turning point of the war for the Union Army and signaled the beginning of the end for the Confederate Army. Over the course of what follows, the events leading up to the battle, an overview of the battle, and subsequent results of the battle will be examined. By the end of June 1863, Lee's army was in high spirits and in need of supplies after the battle of Chancellorsville . To achieve multiple objectives, Lee decided to move his army north into Pennsylvania (Gettysburg Facts & Resources, 2014). Lee targeted the area outside of Gettysburg because it had an abundance of tanneries, which could provide his army with much needed footwear, and the area also had an abundance of other resources. Strategically, Lee also felt that attacking and winning a major battle in the north would increase the morale of his troops, deal a harsh blow to the morale of northerners, and present an opportunity to obtain supplies (Gettysburg Facts & Resources, 2014). As General Robert E. Lee lead the Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania, GeneralJoseph Hooker began moving the Army of the Potomac across Maryland and into Pennsylvania in order to engage Lee, protect Washington, and attempt to repel ... Other minor characters include General Joseph Hooker of the North and General John Dooley of the South. This book teaches you the Horrors of Gettysburg. The theme is violence is never the answer. • 8. The Battle Of The Gettysburg Today, the Battle of Gettysburg is considered one of the most important battles of the American Civil War. However, with 23,049 casualties on the Union side and 28,063 on the Confederate side, it can also be considered one of the bloodiest (Civil War Trust). Such heavy losses naturally rattled the entire nation and Americans on both sides began to question the war and what it stood for. As Americans gathered together at the consecration ceremony of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, the much acclaimed orator and politician Edward Everett delivered what was meant to be the Gettysburg Address. Yet, today, it is not Edward Everett's Gettysburg Address that the world remembers, butAbraham Lincoln's, who was invited to the ceremony almost as an afterthought. Lincoln's 272 words helped remake America by giving hope to its citizens at a time when they were at their lowest. For Everett, the Battle of Gettysburg was a parallel to the ancient Battle of Marathon and his moment up on the stage delivering his Address was his "Pericles moment." The nineteenth century was a time of Greek revival for America, a time when America came to be considered the second Athens. This Greek revival manifested itself in everything from architecture to courses at universities, but perhaps most importantly, in orations at the time. Everett played a significant role in this Greek revival as he was not only a Greek scholar but also a proponent of classicism. With his Gettysburg Address, Everett hoped to ... The first shots were fired no long after daylight, so to be exact, it was 04:30 hours, on the morning of July 1st, (49 Nofi). Bullets flew from the rifles of Union Calvary men on picket duty along the Chambersburg Pike. Chamberlain noticed confederate forces appearing through the thick forest, and ordered the reserves to plug any hole that might be made in the line. With fewer men and less ammunition, Chamberlain constructs a new wall of soldiers even further left than the first. The plan is simple; General Alexander who is in charge of artillery is to fire his cannons at the very middle of the Potomac lines. In an effort to breakdown Union firepower. Lee, an experienced, educated, and extremely successful career military officer. He was second in his class at WestPoint, as well as a valuable asset during the Mexican War. WhenVirginia seceded from the Union, Abraham Lincoln initially asked General Lee to lead the Union Army. General Lee declined the position offered by Lincoln due to his loyalty to him home state1. This decision was based on an inaccurate understanding of his enemy's position and strength. The Battle plan ran against his position of always having the best ground or terrain from which to fight. Not only was General Lee misinformed, but his soldiers were fighting barefoot, hungry, and low on ammunition, due to the naval blockade imposed by Union naval forces. The Northern war effort benefited tremendously from its superior naval forces, which allowed the Union to implement and maintain an effective blockade of Southern ports2. The South was an agricultural society and the North was more industrial. Consequently, the South had to import much of its armaments The Union Army had infinitely more supplies all through the war than the South, due to the North being a heavy industrial and manufacturing center. A derivative of the North's success of the civil war was their abundance of materials needed for proper warfare. Their soldiers were well prepared in terms of ammunition, nutrition, and clothing where as the south was not well equipped at all. Unfortunately for the South, the North positioned its naval ships to block foreign supplies and trade; in hopes to starve out the confederate Army, whom were already suffering. The reason I appointed this event as my subject matter was on the fact that I reside close to Gettysburg, and have heard of some of the events that developed there during the Civil War. Even though I live close to Gettysburg, I haven't seen the reenactments that occur there or been on the tours Gettysburg offers. Since I would like to take part in a tour along with seeing the reenactments, I figured it would be helpful to gain a broader understanding of the events that transpired there before I visit Gettysburg to engage in the festivities. • 19. Essay On The Battle Of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important battles, if not the most important battle from the Civil War. The Civil War was fought from 1861 to 1865 between the Union and the Confederate States of America. The Union was mainly made up of Northern states while the Confederate States of America was mainly Southern states who had seceded from the nation. The Battle of Gettysburg took place right in the middle of war in 1863, and was one of the bloodiest ever. The battle took place in the 3rd year of the war, during the beginning of July on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd . The war would continue for another 2 years and eventually, the Union would end up winning. The Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point in the war because of the amount of casualties that the armies suffered, and since it was a major win and morale boost for the Union army. To begin with, the Battle Gettysburg was one of the most brutal and bloody battles in the war. The amount of casualties that both sides suffered was unreal and insanely high. These casualties cost both armies a big chunk of men for the armies but it hurt the Confederate army more. In Document B it states the total casualties for the Union army was 23,040 which was 27% of their army, while for the Confederate army it was between 20,650 and 25,000 men which was 30–34% of their army at Gettysburg. The Confederate army lost almost one–third of their army which attended Gettysburg and this would turn out to have serious consequences for them. The Union army also lost a lot of men, but it wasn't an as big percent of their army. Furthermore, in map B it compares the Gettysburg casualties to the overall troops and men avalaible for both armies. It states the casualties for the Union army which was 23,040 compared to the total size of the army, which was 918,000 and title men of military age which was 6 million. The casualties at the Battle of Gettysburg, don't seem as bad and it doesn't seem like its an as big chunk of the army. The Confederate Army on the other hand suffered major losses. The total size of their army on December, 1863 was 278,000 and that total men of military age was only 1.2 million. The Union had a little under 650,000 more troops than the Confederate ... A touching statement such as this one appeals to the human side of the audience members, thus causing them to feel as if it is their duty to continue with high spirits in such a treacherous war. Another rhetorical device employed by Lincoln is his use of inclusive language. For instance, the continuous utilization of the word "we", was no mistake. This is meant to create a sense of unity and camaraderie between all people in the United States, not just the Confederacy or the Union. In order to sufficiently motivate and uplift the American people Lincoln used these persuasive techniques. Gettysburg went through two phases of change. The first phase happened between 1863 –1938 and the second phase happened in 1938 when the War Department transferred the administration of Gettysburg to the National Park Service. During the first phase the National Cemetery was built in Gettysburg for the creation of a proper burial of their now dead sons, brothers, and husbands. David Wills, a local attorney, purchased twelve acres on behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the creation of a proper burial of their now dead sons, brothers, or husbands. Wills selected the high ground of Cemetery Hill, a key piece of terrain that had figured prominently as part of the union battle line. First is that the war was getting to the people in the North. The appearance of the Confederate Army would make that even worse. Union forces retaliated and saved their position until one of General Meade's commanders staged his own offensive battle (Appleby, Joyce 486; King 22). This Union general was Dan Sickles. By moving his position without consulting General Meade, a "bulge" was created. This foolish mistake allowed 1,600 Confederate soldiers to rush the Union line to overtake Peach Orchard, capturing 1,000 Yankee prisoners (King 22). Another Union Army general, G.K. Warren, secured and protected a hill called Little Round Top before Confederates claimed it which helped combat the loss from Sickle's blunder ("American Civil War"). At this point in the Battle of Gettysburg, both North and South sustained large numbers of casualties. The Southern casualties roughly totaled 7,000 of 22,000 troops. The North suffered even more by losing 15,000 soldiers. Both sides needed to re–evaluate their battle strategies. Lee thought victory for the South was possible with better timing and artillery. Conversely, Meade and his other Union generals decided to stay in their current position and continue the battle (King 22). After dawn on July 3, 1863, Union soldiers fired upon ... Gettysburg Simulation Game : The Battle Of Gettysburg Essay Gettysburg Simulation Game The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most important battles of the U.S. Civil War and one of the most important battles of all the U.S. history. It was a battle between the Confederate Army of North Virginia, commanded by Robert E. Lee and the Union Army of the Potomac under General George Meade. I played the Gettysburg Simulation Game on www.military.com. I really enjoyed it and thought it was very interesting. I found it a great way to learn U.S. history. The simulation is based on historical maps. I noticed that it was very important to know the different markings represent on the map. Opposing military forces were shown as different colored lines or dots. The longer and thicker the line, it meant that they had more troops. The different colors on the map indicated there were higher or lower levels of elevation. White represented the lowest ground and dark brown indicated the peaks of small hills. Ridges and hills were usually easier to defend and harder to attack. The blue lines represented creeks. Roads were indicated by black lines and were important to keep open in order to receive supplies and reinforcements. My first major decision in the simulation game I made was to strike the Union forces immediately and push south aggressively. I did not want them to get further behind the Union lines. Several simultaneous attacks from the west pushed Union forces toward Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge, where they had stopped to regroup and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
