find people to cover
y o u r w e a k n e s s e s
Working with service leaders and preachers etc it extremely important
It’s vital to know who is planning and leading each element so that things fit together
This isn’t always easy…
It’s also good to let others who are involved (e.g. band) know where things are going. This can help everyone in pulling together.
This is a tricky balance
Leading sometimes involves taking people out of their comfort zones but we’re not really leading if nobody is following…
Depending on the structure of your service there may be more than one journey (or smaller journeys within the bigger one)
Sometimes we are only able to plan for this journey within a section of the service e.g. before the talk
Always looking at beginning – middle – end. The middle is dictated by the beginning and end.
Don’t necessarily need all elements in every service but it’s good to have a balanced diet over time.
Sometimes the elements will define the journey, other times it will be the other way round.
Whichever way this works it’s important that other parts of the service are congruent with where we are in the journey
Use Bible passages (particularly if there is a set reading)
Things which inspire us will often inspire others
It’s good to be both cerebral and intuitive in our planning
Demo the same song in different keys / styles / tempo
Demo the same song with a variety of instruments (inc backing tracks?)
Different arrangements can take time
Practice flexibility in arrangements with the band
Don’t be afraid of silence – space is good
You can usually leave more than you think
A variety of things might be needed between songs
Sometimes right to go straight onto the next song – best way to change key is stop and start again in the new key
Make sure that paper etc. is organised – learn songs where possible
Whatever you do, it should be a brief as it can be
Praying is good but not too long and rambling
It can be good to use scripture or liturgy – just make sure that you’ve got them to hand
Learning your craft - what we do most regularly we can riff on (or bore for England on your specialist topic...).
Best way to be a great leader in a church setting is to be a great leader in a small group (loads of forgiveness, personal relationship, place to hone your skills, you can’t hide or get away with mistakes).
Deep things often happen in smaller groups where there is relationship and community.
Bigger is not always better
Try this exercise with your whole team
You may uncover new leaders
You will certainly find people with differing gifts and you’ll be able to complement each other
