Portugal has two autonomous regions which are Madeira and Açores.

8. The armillary sphere symbolizes the world that the
Portuguese navigators discovered in the fifteenth and
sixteenth centuries and the people with whom they
exchanged ideas and trade.

symbol and one of the oldest. Inside it there are more things
that also have a meaning. Let’s see!

conquered by D. Afonso Henriques that belonged to
the Moors and where D. Afonso Henriques fortified

It is said that, in the battle of Ourique, Jesus Christ appeared to
D. Afonso Henriques, and said: "With this sign you will conquer".
It’s also said that counting the wounds and adding the sum to the
number of “quinas”, you will get a total sum of 30, which
represents the money received by Judas for betraying Christ.

13. Portuguese National Anthem
The National Anthem is one of the main symbols of Portugal,
established by Article 11 of the Constitution. The music
composed by Alfredo Keil and the lyrics written by Henrique
Lopes de Mendonça. They named it "A Portuguesa".
It was not always accepted by the regime and was only
officially approved in 1957.

14. It’s a book written by Luís Vaz de Camões and it’s one of
the most known Portuguese books. It’s a poem divided in
10 parts (“cantos”) and all verses have 10 syllables.
The main theme of this work is the travel of Vasco da
Gama in order to get to India and also the Portuguese
Maritime Discoveries.
(It’s so important that we study it at school!)

15. “Galo de Barcelos” is the main symbol
of a region in the north of Portugal
(Barcelos-Braga). Tells the legend that a
man was sentenced to hang but he
swore to be as innocent as a roasted
rooster crows. However, the roasted
rooster really crowed! So, “Galo de
Barcelos” became an important
Portuguese symbol.

16. D. Afonso Henriques
D. Afonso Henriques was born at 𝟐𝟓 𝒕𝒉
of June of 1109 in Guimarães or Viseu
and died at 6th December of 1185, in
Coimbra. Commonly known as "the
Conqueror“.
He was the first King of Portugal. He
achieved the independence of
“Condado Portucalense”.

18. The “miscaros” are a specie of mushroom. They are
characteristic of Portugal and really appreciated by our people.
Our town is specifically known by this food that give it the title of
Capital of Miscaro.

19. “Presunto” is the name given to dry-cured ham in Portugal.
Suggestion: If you want to try a good recipe, eat ham with

20. “Bolo Rei” (translation: King Cake) is a
traditional Portuguese cake that is usually eaten
around Christmas (25th of December) until “King Days” on 6th
of January.
It is a dessert that is present in any Portuguese home during

22. The olive tree is a common tree of Portugal and also of all
over the world. With the fruit of the olive trees, which is
the olive, is made the olive oil. This olive oil has many
health benefits and adds to the food a flavor and a very
good aroma.

fruit of the chestnut tree. It is a seed, like nuts, but has
much less fat. It is caught during the autumn.

dessert who quickly became appreciated. Presently are

important economic activity for our country. Around 45% of

The “escudo” was created on May 22th of 1911. This
currency was used for ninety-one years. On January

The Carnation is the main symbol of
the revolution that happened in
Portugal on 25th April of 1974 that
overthrew the dictatorship and
installed democracy in Portugal.

31. A florist gave a red carnation to a soldier who put it in his shotgun
and was quickly imitated by others. The revolution became known as
the "Carnation Revolution" and was, undoubtedly, a remarkable
moment for the history of Portugal.

32. Caravela
The caravel was a ship used by the Portuguese during Maritime
Discoveries in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The caravels
were of medium size: had 20-30 meters long and weighed about
43-69 tons. The caravels usually had two masts (the big ones
could have three) with triangular sails which allowed the
navigators to move at sea making a zigzag even in cross winds.
They had the symbol of the Cross of Christ painted in the sails.

42. Zé Povinho is a Portuguese everyman created
in 1875 by Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro.

43. Universal exhibition made in 1998 which was organized to
celebrate the travels and maritime discoveries of the Portuguese
navigators in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The Expo98 was
