DESIGN CONCEPT
Architecture combines art, math, and science to create structures that are functional as well as
visually appealing. I wanted to design a building that is interesting to look at, but at the same
time I must also know what geometric shapes provide stability as well as functionality. While
buildings incorporate many different shapes, there are a small number of key shapes that can be
found in any building. These shapes are triangles, rectangles, and circles. As the major design
concept, I have tried to combine sphere and cuboid to form the building and create a specific
geometrical volume. I have also used the concept of symmetry when designing the building.
Sphere
Sphere is body that consists of regular, continuous surface. It has no lines, edges or corners. It
gives neither horizontal nor vertical emphasis. It is a form which is closed within it. It provides
impenetrable appearance. It arouses sensations of concentration, repose and orientation.
Cuboid
A cuboid is a solid figure bounded by six faces and having the approximate shape of a cube. It is a
rectangular parallelepiped. The cuboid building have sharp, clean lines, ensuring that the building is
viewed in perspective with ease.
The combination of Sphere and Cuboid
The major concept for my commercial complex design is the combination of sphere and cuboid.
It is an expression of geometry. It is based on the idea of proportions and symmetries which
have power to create harmony in architecture. Harmony is the connection of different or
opposed things to an arranged whole. Sphere has round shape, soft appearance and blunt
corners. It is continuous and dynamic volume. While cuboid have straight lines, hard appearance
and sharp edges. It is non continuous and static volume. Besides having a true geometrical
shape, both sphere and cuboid contrast with each other. But, when we put both together, it
blends well. Together they both enhance each other and compliment the nature of one another.
The geometrical volume of sphere and cuboid together helps building to gain a unique structure.
Thus, I have tried to bring sphere and cuboid together making the building both static and
dynamic at the same time.
Response to the site
As we know, our site is of triangular shape with 11m wide road on each 3 side of side, it has both
positive and restraining sides. The acute angle on each three corners of site provides less
freedom to allocate its form and functional use while 3 m offset on all 3 sides of site reduces the
total area of the site. Besides, road facing site on its all direction also have a major beneficial
advantage to link with the surrounding easily. The façade of the building also will have a greater
value.
The 9 storied commercial building stands tall at the centre of our triangular site. Its central
position tries to maintain its hierarchy and presents a majestic appearance. It’s also gives a
magnificent view from the 3 major nodes at the 3 corner of the site. The main entry is given
from the north since it is the longest side of the triangular site. Beside, vehicle movement to
enter and exit to and from the site will be easy in the north since the vehicle will turn left to
enter the site while coming from left side of the road. One doesn’t have to cross the road to
enter the site with this arrangement.
External appearance
The spherical volume of the building will be whole glazed with triangular steel framing. The
glazed façade will give a delicate and light appearance and also gives the reflection of the sky
and its surrounding from its round facade has its own beautiful aspect. While the cubical volume
of the building will be partially glazed. Double glazed tinted glass panels will be used to reduce
solar radiation.
Internal appearance
In the building, the entry is on north. One will enter through the sphere and reach inside to the
cylindrical atrium which facilitates to give a visual linkage to the numerous commercial activities
placed radially to the atrium. Two spiral escalators, elevators and a staircase give both visual
and physical linkage vertically as well as horizontally. Major activities like departmental store,
movie hall, shops and showrooms, bank, banquet hall, food court, restaurant, game zone, offices
etc are provide majorly for commercial propose and for entertainment and other services.
Internal planning
In floor each floor plan, the combination of square and circle can be seen. Circle consists of
central circular atrium surrounding by circular corridor which is linked with the spaces provided
for different commercial and other activities radically arranged around it. The square plan is
linked with the atrium with access provided where activities which need bigger space like movie
hall, banquet hall, departmental store etc are placed.
Entire building is divided into 4 divisions vertically.
 Triple layered basement – for parking
 Commercial zone ( ground floor, 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th floor)
 Corporate zone (5th,6th and 7th floor)
 Service area (8th floor)
Triple layered basement parking is provided which accommodates 75 car parks and 30 Bike Park
in each basement. Besides surface parking service is also provided on the ground level.
Conclusion
Thus, I have tried to create an effective commercial complex design creating a geometrical shape
with sphere and cuboid, maintaining all by-laws of the concerned area and providing a better
functional use.
