Exercise – Build Your Brand
"Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us
need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be
in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You."
--- Tom Peters in Fast Company, 1997
Step 1: As a group watch the following 2 videos:
Total time for this exercise: 10 mins
To start off the conversation about personal branding let’s get clear what it is.
Branding Basics from William Arruda defines a brand as, “a promise of value”
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vssIN42z8g8&feature=related (2.14 mins)
Entrepreneurs: Making the Company Brand/Personal Brand Connection
• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnAwXUDmlEI&feature=related (2.57 mins)
• Keeping the company and personal brand separate but still meshed together!!
As a group take 5 mins to discuss what you have just watched; what do you agree and disagree
with.
Step 2: working with the volunteer
Total time for this exercise: 15 mins
Turn you attention now to the volunteer with the aim to help them create their personal brand not forgetting
Williams Arruda definition of a brand as “a unique promise of value” and Brenda Bence saying to develop your
personal brand separate to the company brand but they still need to mesh together.
The group needs to help the volunteer write down their personal unique promise of value using the next video
from William Arruda.
Motivation questions (10 mins brainstorm)
• What am I passionate about?
• What are my personal values?
• Where do I see myself in 5 years time?
• What’s important to me?
• What motivates me?
• How would I like to see the world?
2. • What contribution would I like to make?
Positioning questions (10 mins brainstorm)
• What’s my current reputation? (see handout Reputation Management – for homework)
• What are my greatest strengths
• What are my most differentiated and valuable skills?
• What personality characteristics make people interested in me?
• What are my greatest accomplishments?
Connections questions (10 mins brainstorm)
• Who do I know that could help me reach my goals?
• Who needs to know me to help me reach my goals?
• What can I do to rapidly expand my professional network?
• How can I add value to the members of my network?
• How can I connect different members of my network for mutual benefit?
• What can I do to nurture my network regularly?
Step 3: Personal Branding: Differentiation
On flip chart write down two headings side by side headed same and different.
Still working with your volunteer spend 7 mins max listing everything you know about them that is
the ‘same’ as their ‘peer group’ and everything that is ‘different’ about them.
Once you have completed both lists e.g. same and different, review the words listed with the previous exercise and
see what really jumps out at you. The group to help throughout this process.
Now the volunteer should have a whole bundle of words that he/she can take away and highlight what they
want their personal brand to start looking like.
