Summary
11. 2nd AQUAKNIGHT Conference,
21 May 2014, Aqaba, Jordan
Mondher BENAICH - SONEDE11
The pilot area "Gammarth 90" is part of the northern suburbs of Tunis
(Common Marsa). It is located 20 km from the downtown. This area is
limited by forest on the North and by the Mediterranean Sea on the East.
The pilot area is supplied by gravity from a reservoir of capacity 2500 m3
(highest level of water= 90m).

Mondher BENAICH - SONEDE13
1-2 The selection criteria of the pilot area
• Autonomous Zone : (1,641 subscribers) isolated from the Greater Tunis
network that feeds 650,000 subscribers.
• The pilot area has network maps scanned and georeferenced.
• The pilot area network consists of different types of pipes (asbestos
cement, cast iron and polyethylene : AC, CI, PE).
• The network efficiency of the pilot area is quite low (near 80%).
• Presence of high pressure areas.
• Presence of major consumers .
• The pilot area is near the intervener team offices which facilitates the
monitoring of the project.

2-1 Reduction of physical losses :
The reduction of physical losses is based on the realisation of the
following:
a. Preparatory works.
b. Quantification of losses and identification of priority areas for leak
detection.
c. Realisation of operations of research and location of leaks .
d. Repair of detected leaks
e. The implementation of new measures after the repair and the
continuation of operations of leaks detection.
2- Methodology for losses reduction
16. 2nd AQUAKNIGHT Conference,
21 May 2014, Aqaba, Jordan
Mondher BENAICH - SONEDE16
2-2 Reduction of commercial losses
The reduction of commercial losses is based on the following :
a) Selection of a test zone containing a sample of 59 subscribers.
b) Installation of an electromagnetic flowmeter at the inlet of the test zone
in order to control the volume of distributed water .
c) Realisation of tests related to the comparison of the volume of distributed
water and billed water by means of the equipments installation and the
replacement of old meters (UFR, new meters, AMR)
d) Determination of replaced meters accuracy; a sample of 20 of the 59
replaced meters will be returned to UNIPA (Italy) to test on a standard
test bench.
2- Methodology for losses reduction
17. 2nd AQUAKNIGHT Conference,
21 May 2014, Aqaba, Jordan
Mondher BENAICH - SONEDE17
Some of the preparatory works are achieved such as the mapping and
the isolation of the pilot area as well as the dividing of the area
according to network branchement .
Some others will be realised like the implementation of pressure
stabilizer in appropriate zone also the operations of leak detection and
repair.
It was estimated the necessary equipement for the project realisation in
addition to the differences between budgets and expenses
