3. Narrative Structure
Open Structure- As Kenny Rogers life is still going on when the documentary
finishes, meaning that there is still information to be added about his life in the
future and doesn't just stop when the documentary does.
Singular Stranded- This is a singular stranded documentary as there is only one
story line that features in the documentary, which is about Kenny Rogers life.
Circular Structure- This is due to the fact that it begins and ends in the present but
works its way through the past, however still ends in the present.
4. Camera Work
Establishing shots are used in this documentary to create context for the
audience and for them to see the surrounding and where is being filmed.
Observation footage is also featured in this documentary, tis is a mixed of real
and staged footage to either cover jumpcuts or to give the audience an insight
of what Kenny Rogers life is really like.
5. Mise-en-Scene Other examples of
relevant mise-en-
scene throughout the
documentary-
- Crowds
- Instruments
- Images that
Kenny Rogers
had taken
- Friends
- Stages
During the interviews the mise-en-scene is relevant to
the person or the topic of documentary. For example
when doing an interview with one of Kenny Rogers
band friends they have him in front of a pino.
Also the observation footage is relevant as most of it is
with instruments in the background or within the frame
of the interview. This then links in with the topic of the
documentary.
6. Sound
Non-diegetic =
● Relevant music that is by Kenny Rogers plays in the background during
the documentary. There is also images and music playing throughout the
documentary of bands that Kenny Rogers was in.
Diegetic=
● The voiceover in the documentary is there to anchor and describe the
programme to the audience and what Kenny Rogers past experiences
were.
7. Editing
- Montages are used between narration and interviews to give the
audience something visually appealing to look at, this is also a good way
of something clips in a short amount of time.
- Straight cuts are mainly used used between shots in this documentary as
this is a good way of showing progression for the audience.
- Cutaways in interviews and to cover up jumpcuts are used, this is also to
give the audience something visually interesting to watch instead of
someone just talking to the camera.
8. Archive Material
There is lots of archive material used in this documentary, as Kenny Rogers
talks a lot about his past experience, meaning that they have including images
and different clips of him from the past. An example of this is him playing at
Glastonbury festival in front of hundreds of people, which links into the
documentary as the topic is about his music career.
9. Graphics
● Graphics are used when people are being interviewed and their name and
relevance to the documentary is also on these graphics. There is normally
a banner which is behind these graphics to make them stand out to the
audience.
● They also feature at the end of the documentary to show who worked on
what and who starred in the documentary. This then gives credit to the
producers and the filming staff that have worked on this documentary.
