Food is material that comes
from animals or plants. It is eaten by living
things to provide energy and nutrition.
3. FOOD ADULTERATION
Extraction of valuable components from
food or addition of some thing of lower price
which is absent in the food normally with an evil
motive which lowers the food value and has
injurious effect to health is called food adulteration.
5. FOOD CONTAMINATION
Food contamination is anything in food that
reduces the safety or quality and is not
supposed to be there. Food may be
contaminated intentionally or accidentally.
7. FOODS WHICH ARE COMMONLY
ADULTERATED IN DHAKA CITY
Milk :- It is adulterated by the addition of water, starch, skim milk
powder and removal of cream.
Ghee :- It is adulterated with vanaspati and animal fats such as
pig's fat. In order to improve the flavor of adulterated ghee tributyrin
is added.
Cereals :- Rice and wheat are mixed with stones sand grit and
mud to increase the bulk.
Flour :- Wheat flour is mixed with soapstone and Bengal gram
flour is adulterated with Kesari dal or lathyrus flour.
8. FOODS WHICH ARE COMMONLY
ADULTERATED IN DHAKA CITY
Pulses :- They are adulterated with Kesari Dal stones are added to
pulses
Edible Oil :- They are mixed with cheaper oil, toxic oil (e.g. argemone
oil) and mineral oil.
Honey :- It is adulterated with sugar and jiggery(gur).
Vedegeable & Fruits:- It is adulterated mainly by spraying or
injecting chemical in it.
Fishes :- It is adulterated by using formalin to preserve for a long
time.

Food safety is a scientific discipline describing
handling, preparation and storage of food in ways
that preserve the quality of food to prevent
contamination and food-borne illnesses.
11. FOOD SECURITY
The final report of the 1996 World Food Summit states that
food security "exists when all people, at all times, have
physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious
food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an
active and healthy life".

STATUS OF BANGLADESH
Ensuring safe food is a major concern in Bangladesh.
Food adulteration has reached to an alarming level in Bangladesh.
The sufferings of the consumers in Bangladesh due to food
contamination has made their life agonized and hence there is a crying
need in Bangladesh for regulatory efforts to control this unethical
practice.
13. FOOD SAFETY & SECURITY
STATUS OF BANGLADESH
In Bangladesh, high population growth, frequency of natural
disasters, and low productivity are traditionally considered to
be causes of food insecurity. However, recent data shows that these
problems are no longer prominent in the food security issue.
It is also evident that national level food sufficiency does not
ensure food security at the individual levels.
