Protectress of Athens …
Who was Athena?
Athena, the Greek goddess of war and wisdom, sprang from the head of Zeus, the most powerful of the Greek gods.
An oracle had informed Zeus that the Titaness Metis would be bearing their child. According to the oracle, the first child would be a daughter, but their
second child would be a son - who would do Zeus in, as he had his father, and as his father had his grandfather. Zeus, stung by the news, decided to
take care of the affair by swallowing Metis. He soon developed a horrible headache; his head was split open with an axe - and out popped Athena, fully
armored and screeching a war cry.
Athens was awarded to her as the result of a contest with Neptune. It was decided that the city would go to the god who presented it with the most
useful gift. Neptune submitted the horse; Athena the olive tree.
As the patron of Athens, the Parthenon was built in her honor. Although she is often portrayed with her helmet and shield, Athena only fought in the
name of peace. As the goddess of both war and wisdom, her side was always victorious - because she never rushed into battle without thinking.
