  • 3. SOUND AND VISION & OPEN CONTENT - From digitisation to making available - From providing end-user services to facilitation - ‘Open, unless’ policy for our own collections - Actively marking the public domain material - First attempts at negotiating allowing for reuse 9-8-2014
  • 4. OPEN IMAGES “Open Images is an open media platform that offers online access to audiovisual archive material to stimulate creative reuse.” - Research started in 2009 (WMNL provided advise) - Open on every level - Functions as an infrastructure for reuse 9-8-2014

  • 6. IMPACT OF VIDEO ON WIKIPEDIA 2013 - Number of items on Wikimedia Commons - 1,600 - Number of articles on Wikipedia - 2,000 - Number of language versions - 70 - Number of views -50,000,000!!! 9-8-2014
  • 7. NUMBERS IN PERSPECTIVE - Length of entire S&V archive: ∼800,000h - Length of ‘our’ newsreel collection: ∼500h - Length of material in Open Images: ∼110h - i.e.: - 22% of ‘our’ newsreel collection available through Open Images, - which is 0.014% of our entire archive. 9-8-2014
  • 8. AUDIOVISUAL CONTENT & WIKIMEDIA - Video on Wikimedia/Wikipedia is not established (Andrew Lih, Peter B. Kaufman) - Currently less than 50,000 videos on Commons - Sound and Vision has contributed ~2,200 videos through Open Images (almost 5%) - So video currently remains an area for Sound and Vision to make a significant contribution - With our Wikimedia Coordinator we are experimenting with different strategies 9-8-2014
