CyberKnife is a noninvasive alternative to surgery for treating cancerous and noncancerous tumors anywhere in the body. CyberKnife delivers beams of high-dose radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy, offering hope to patients whose tumors were previously inoperable. CyberKnife treatment involves no incision.

2. What is Cyberknife
The CyberKnife system is a form of robotic radiosurgery used to treat both malignant
and benign tumors in all areas of the body. The advantages to the CyberKnife system is
that it provides a more targeted and precise form of treatment than other radiation
therapies, it is relatively non-invasive, and it eliminates the need for the rigid head
frame needed in other brain surgery procedures. CyberKnife is also an outpatient
surgery that requires no incision, is painless, and requires little recovery time for the
patient making it a quick and minimally distressing treatment for the patient. Using
image guided technology continuously throughout the process, the CyberKnife system
is able to accurately target tumors with radiation produced from a small linear particle
accelerator. This particle accelerator is attached to a robotic arm with enough freedom
of movement to be able to reach any targeted area of the patient’s body.

3. CyberKnife is able to treat a large variety of tumors and is especially effective for
individuals who are unable to undergo traditional surgeries. Patients should consult
with their doctor(s) before considering CyberKnife as an option so that a team of
specialists can be assembled to prepare the patient and plan for the treatment. Brain
scans must be done prior to the procedure so that the data can be loaded into the
CyberKnife system and used to determine the critical structures needing to be treated

After the CyberKnife system is provided with
the relevant data from the previously
performed brain scan, the patient is positioned
on a table while the robotic arm moves around
the body and delivers radiation to the tumors.
It may be necessary for the patient to slightly
shift positions in order for the radiation to
accurately target specific areas, however, the
computerized targeting system is calibrated to
handle any minor shifts that may occur
inadvertently. Depending on the location and
severity of the cancer, the patient may have to
undergo more than one treatment.

6. Recovery
Recovery for CyberKnife is relatively easy and quick. Most patients are able to return
to regular activities in a fairly short amount of time. If the patient must have
multiple treatments, they must return over the following days to receive them as
well as to assess progress.

7. Potential Risks
Some minimal side effects may be apparent for some patients but they generally
subside after a few weeks. Some of these side effects include:
• Injury to surgery site tissue
• Liver pain
• Vomiting and nausea
• Weakness and/or fatigue
• Rib pain
One long term side effect may be radiation-induced liver disease (RILD) which is
usually accompanied by symptoms of abdominal pain, fatigue, and increased
abdominal girth. Patients should consult their doctor(s) if any of these symptoms
persist.
