1. Updating Marriage Notes – 1/09/14
LG: To form an opinion on the relevance of marriage and divorce laws to
contemporary Australia and be able to justify your opinion. How should
Marriage and Divorce laws change, if at all?
Intro: Marriage in Australia and around the world was once a vast and ultimate
ceremony of love between a man and a woman, but is the Marriage Act 1961
still applicable to today’s society? With the number of homosexual
relationships on the rise, should the Government allow fair and equal rights for
everyone? This essay will outline current Australian Laws, within both Marriage
and Divorce, and explaining their relevance to modern day life, as well as,
statistics and graphs displaying rates and numbers of marriages registered in
Australia, recommendations for improvement, future outlooks and new
legislations will be presented. The Marriage Act 1961, is out dated and does
not include factor in gay relationships, which is totalling 1% of Australia’s
population, and as a total, change is essential, to create a more broad, fair and
equal, definition of Marriage.
