A filmmaker proposes an opening sequence for a drama about a family where one of the young sons goes missing. The sequence will show the family, including the mother and two brothers, playing happily together, then end with one brother alone to indicate he has disappeared. It will be shot in Coleshill, Beaconsfield and leave the audience wondering what happened without revealing details. The goal is to build suspense and tension through editing and a sad, downbeat musical score while evoking sympathy for the grieving family.
2. My Idea
• My idea is to have a family of three, the mum and
two sons.
• It is going to be about one of the little boys going
missing. However in the opening sequence we
are not going to find out how he has gone
missing to leave it on a cliff hanger
• In the beginning I want to film shots of them as a
family, and the two little boys playing together
and at the end I want to film the little boy playing
alone to show that his brother has left him
3. Where I’m shooting
I'm shooting in Coleshill, Beaconsfield . I want to film on
the Coleshill cricket club green.
4. Genre: Drama
• I want my opening sequence to be a drama. I
also want it to be mysterious and leave people
wondering what happened to the boy.
Target Audience
• My target audience will probably be early
teenagers as I don’t want younger as there
may be scary and sad
• I also think the topic that I am exploring is
quite hard so I think I should have an older
audience watching it
5. Characters
The Little Brother
• I am going to film a three year old, they are going to be the
character who has loses their brother.
• I want him to wear a bright coat so that it is easy to see him
The Lost Brother
• This character is going to be a little older (around 5 years old.)
• I am going to film clips of the the lost brother to show the
memory’s of him before he went missing.
• I want him to wear a darker colour coat
The Mother
• My opening sequence is going ot be about the mothers reaction
and how much she is hurting
• I want to film scenes with her crying to show the loss she has
experienced
7. Format
• I am going to creating a 3 minute opening sequence to a
film which will introduce character, setting, plot and mood.
• I want to build a climax through out my opening sequence,
maybe with the use of music or the way I arrange the clips
in the sequence.
• I want my opening sequence to create suspense and
tension
Representation
• I want the audience to feel sorry for the family that has
lost one of their children.
8. Dialogue
• The voice over is going to help me set the
scene for the audience, it help them
understand what is going on. I may give them
an insight into events that may happen later in
the opening sequence.
• I am going to use a little dialogue in the
sequence but most of my dialogue will come
from the voice over
9. Other Sound
• I am going to use mostly non-diegetic sound
through out my opening sequence, but I may
also use some diegetic sound
• I am going to use music through out my
sequence which is sad and downbeat
hopefully this will add to the sadness of the
opening sequence
