History of Buddhism
Buddah* THE FOUNDER OF BUDDHISM
Buddah means – illuminated
The founder of Buddhism in this
world is Buddha Shakyamuni.
He was born as a royal prince
His parents gave him the name
Siddhartha and there were many
wonderful predictions about his
future.
WERE THEIR BELIFES COME
FROM?
He was 29 when he
decided to leave his village
to go mediated in the
forest. He trained to find the
enlightment under Bodhi
Tree in Bodh Gaya , India.
He was so good he was
oftenly requested to teach
others the path.
MAJOR INFLUENCES IN
BUDDHISM
INFLUENCES IN BUDDHISM
• Major Influence: Hinduism
• Local cultures had the most
influence on what The Buddha
taught. Initially it was Brahmanism.
• Buddha was born in a Hindu
family.
• Hinduism is older by at least a
millennium or two.
• They both come from the same
region, India.
• Buddhists do not accept any Hindu
god either as equal or superior to
The Buddha.
INFLUENCE
• Over 1500 years ago,
Hindu tradition accepted
The Buddha as an
incarnation of Vishnu; view
that is not acceptable to
many Buddhists.
• Buddhism gained
popularity in India
because it released the
people from oppression of
tradition and orthodoxy.
SIMILAR BELIEFS
• Shared beliefs:
• Meditation and spiritual practices
• Adopted beliefs:
• Karma
• Reincarnation
• Liberation
• The Buddhist belief of non-injury and
compassion toward all living beings
came from Hinduism.
WHAT DID BUDDSIM TAUGHT?
Buddhist path can be summed up
as:
(1) to lead a moral life,
(2) to be mindful and aware of
thoughts and actions, and
(3) to develop wisdom and
understanding.
by the Four Noble Truths and the
Noble Eightfold Path.
FOUR NOBLE TRUTHS AND THE NOBLE
EIGHTFOLD PATH.You should know sufferings:
Buddha means that we should know the sufferings of our future lives. Through
knowing these, we shall develop a strong wish to liberate our self from them.
You should abandon origins
‘Origins’ refers mainly to our delusions, anger and self-grasping ignorance.
You should attain cessations
We should develop strong renunciation for this endless cycle, and make the
strong determination to attain enlightenment, the permanent cessation of
suffering, and to lead every living being to that state.
<if you are healthy, you will not be for a long time, you will become sick and
that is the enddles cycle>
You should practice the path
a spiritual path that leads to the pure happiness of liberation and
enlightenment. A detailed explanation of the stages of the path to liberation
and enlightenment can be found.
REVEALING OUR PROGRESS ALONG THE BUDDHIST PATH TO
ENLIGHTENMENT
THE EIGHT AUSPICIOUS
SINGS
The umbrella: first we
should enter the
Buddhist family.
The fish : harmony ,
under this umbrella we
should always live in
harmony and peace.
The vase: Enjoy the inner
wealth of our faith, moral
discipline, our study and
practice of Dharma, there
upon benefiting others,
consideration for others,
and wisdom.
The lotus : purity -should
always strive to become a
pure being by practicing
the Bodhisattva’s way of
life
THE EIGHT AUSPICIOUS
SINGS
The conch shell - the
Dharma Jewel” ; we
should accomplish
this Jewel by the
realisations of the
stages of the path,
within our mind
The knot of eternity ,
the special talent of
Buddha’s realizations,
specially omniscient
wisdom.
The victory banner The
uncommon quality of
Buddha’s letting behind
all delusions and
mistaken appearance.
*These last two together
(‘The knot of eternity’
and ‘The victory banner’)
indicate that through
gaining the Dharma
Jewel, we should attain
these two uncommon
qualities of Buddha.
The Dharma Wheel indicates that, having
attained these two uncommon qualities of
Buddha, we are able to lead all living
beings to permanent liberation from
suffering, principally by turning the wheel of
Dharma, that is by giving Dharma
teachings. This is our final goal.
Wisdom & Compassion
At one extreme, you could be a good hearted fool and at the other
extreme, you could attain knowledge without any emotion. Buddhism
uses the middle path to develop both.
ARE OTHER RELIGIONS WRONG?
Buddhism is also a belief system
which is tolerant of all other beliefs or
religions. Buddhism agrees with the
moral teachings of other religions
but Buddhism. They don’t’ mind in
labeling themselves, that is why
there have never been any wars
fought in the name of Buddhism.
That is why Buddhists do not preach
and try to convert, only explain if an
explanation is sought.
WHAT ABOUT THE FAT BUDA?
Siddharta Gautama was skinny so…
Bikkhu Hotei: a buddhist monk, he
was admired by his internal peace,
wisdom and happines,. He came
to be call Budai, for this means
Joyfull. - the smiling Buda-
But he didn’t achive the complete
illumination like Buddah Gautman.
FACTS
Purpose of life: Theravada - Become an arhat,
escape the cycle of rebirth, and attain nirvana.
Mahayana - Become a boddhisatva then help
others attain enlightenment.
Afterlife: Rebirth or nirvana. Nirvana is seen simply as
the cessation of suffering by some and as a
heavenly paradise by others.
Holidays: Vary, but often include Buddha's birthday,
Buddha's enlightenment, lunar quarters.
