1.“Meena thus joined the ranks of some 10
million children prostituted around the world —
more are in India than in any other country. The
brothels of India are the slave plantations of the
21st century.”
2. “When Naina turned about 12, the brothel
owners prepared to sell her as well. At that
Vivek, who was being forced to do the brothel’s
laundry, protested vigorously. The owners beat
Vivek, an extremely bright boy who was never
allowed to go to school, but he continued to
plead that his big sister not be sold.”
3. “They received help from a terrific anti-
trafficking organization called ApneAap
(www.apneaap.org), run by a former journalist
named Ruchira Gupta. Ms. Gupta covered
trafficking and was so horrified by what she
found that she quit her job and devoted her life
to fighting the brothel owners.”

Meena, her children and the ApneAap staff,
because they are potential witnesses in a
criminal case against the traffickers. One
ApneAap staff member was stabbed a few days

5.“This is an issue crying out for world leaders —
and community groups — to seize and run with.
President Bush has pressed the issue more than
his predecessors, but he could do much more. If
a little boy like Vivek can stand up to modern
slavers, why can’t world leaders do the same?”

My Summary of the article
Meena was kidnapped when she was just a young girl by a trafficker to work in a brothel
in the city of Katihar, India. Meena then becomes pregnant and gave birth to her
daughter, Naina and her son, Vivek. Her children were raised apart form her and Meena
was threathened to be killed by her owners as she have tried to contact the police to
rescue Naina and Vivek but failed to do so as the police were uninterested. Meena ran
away but continues to return to the brothel occasionally to beg for her children. When
Naina turned 12, the brothel prepared to sell her into prostitution. Vivek escapes to
seek help for Naina and was reunited with Meena. They received help from a terrific
anti-trafficking organization called ApneAap, runby a former journalist named Ruchira
Gupta. The organization saved Naina but the brothel remains open.
