- The Bible is a timeless book. 1Co 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. The Lord raised up prophets anciently to guide His people. Especially were the words of the prophets of great significance when both Israel and Judah, because of their continued apostasy, were to be taken captive by Assyria and Babylon, and then every other nation, right down to when God liberates His people. As such, the words of these prophets are very applicable to God’s people down to the end of time. This we seek to examine and apply in this series of presentations.
- Jonah writes of his experience, unlike the other prophets who prophesy against Historical context of Jonah (mid 700’s, around 760 BC, as this is the time of the reign of Jeroboam II) is found in 2 Kings 14: 23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria, and reigned forty and one years. 2Ki 14:25 He restored the coast of Israel from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of his servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of Gathhepher. (Around Galilee and Nazareth) The Lord at times gave prophecies for the gentile nations. The account in the book of Jonah is one such prophecy, which tells us how much God is interested in the salvation of all peoples, and it also illustrates the wickedness and state of the world, and our urgent message to them. This prophecy also speaks of the sure judgment to come on this world. Nahum is a collection of poems announcing the downfall of the Assyrian Empire, and its capital city Nineveh. He begins his ministry against Nineveh around the year 663 BC - 612, about 100 years after Jonah’s ministry, and the repentance of Nineveh. Amazing Chapter 1 tells of Nineveh’s doom. Chapter 2 how it would be destroyed, and chapter 3, why was its doom deserving.
- A representation of the great cities of the world on a microcosmic scale, but on a macrocosmic scale, Nineveh represents the world steeped in vice, crime, war, bloodshed, and all the unimaginable evils. This was a warning message, and if heeded there could be the staying of the justice of God, which is His giving over to evil.
- Similar message as given to Noah. Also very prophetic, as God watches over the cruelty and injustices of the world, and on day judgment would be upon the world.

- His Boasts and Cruelty "Tiglath-Pileser, the powerful king, the king of hosts who has no rival, the king of the four zones, the king of all kinglets, the lord of lords, the shepherd-prince, the king of kings, the exalted prophet… "The bodies of their warriors in destructive battle like the inundator (Rimmon) I overthrew; their corpses I spread over the valleys and the high places of the mountains. Their heads I cut off; at the sides of their cities I heaped them like mounds. Their spoil, their property, their goods, to a countless number I brought forth. Six thousand men, the relics of their armies, which before my weapons had fled, took my feet. I laid hold upon them and counted them among the men of my own country." {1904 ATJ, EB 260.1}
- He was the greatest robber and destroyer that has yet been found in Assyrian history; and undoubtedly one of the most cruel men that has ever appeared in any history. He reigned twenty-five years, and made at least eleven campaigns of slaughter, robbery, and destruction. Two brief passages only, will be sufficient to show his continuous treatment of the peoples whose countries he invaded, and who chose to defend their country against him. His own record is as follows: -- {1904 ATJ, EB 262.1} "I erected a pyramid at the approach to its chief gate. The nobles, as many as had revolted, I flayed; with their skins I covered the pyramid. Some of these I immured in the midst of the pyramid; others above the pyramid I impaled on stakes; others round about the pyramid I planted on stakes; many at the exit from my own country I flayed; with their skins I clad the fortress walls. The limbs of the chief officers who were the chief officers of the kings who had rebelled, I cut off. I brought Akhi-pababa to Nineveh and flayed him; with his skin I clad the fortress wall of Nineveh. . . . {1904 ATJ, EB 262.2}
- In brief; Jonah thought that based on the wickedness of this city, surely God has to destroy it. He could have been fearful, but based on his conversation with God, it appears that he was reluctant to give any hope that that city.
- Jonah, like so many today who do not understand God’s character of love, and wants God to behave like themselves. This was the true reason he did not want to go to Nineveh. A true mirror of ourselves. But Jonah had a point. Reflecting on the magnitude of wickedness of Nineveh and the Assyrians, it is any wonder that Jonah did not want to carry a message to them. He probably wanted swift retribution and justice to be meted out to the Assyrians. But God knows whose are his, and how to preserve them.
- Speaks to the world in darkness. Thanks be to God for His grace and mercy. Into the world the people of God much hurry on with the message of hope. The people are lost, but for God’s grace.
- Mysteriously the Lord brings Jonah in the presence of heathen sailors. Firstly they prayed unto their gods, and the finally calls upon the name of the true God of heaven.
- A symbolism of Christ’s death Jon 1:17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Jesus death, burial and resurrection

- Could you imagine. This reminds me of the Loud Cry. Very simple message – a message of 5 words, according to the Hebrew. The entire city responded to the call.
- Jer 18:8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them. Remember there are 120000 citizens in Nineveh. Apparently a considerable number of persons did repent The Easy Read Version Jon 3:6 When the king of Nineveh heard about this, he left his throne, removed his robe, put on special clothes to show that he was sorry, and sat in ashes. Jon 3:7 The king wrote a special message and sent it throughout the city: A command from the king and his great rulers: For a short time no person or animal should eat anything. No herd or flock will be allowed in the fields. Nothing living in Nineveh will eat or drink water. Jon 3:8 But every person and every animal must be covered with a special cloth to show they are sad. People must cry loudly to God. Everyone must change their life and stop doing bad things. Jon 3:9 Who knows? Maybe God will stop being angry and change his mind, and we will not be punished. Jon 3:10 God saw what the people did. He saw that they stopped doing evil. So God changed his mind and did not do what he planned. He did not punish the people.
- A message of doom. Isa 13:1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.
- Nineveh a symbol of this world in its current state, and this prophecy of Nahum speaks of it coming and utter destruction.
- The Babylonians are strengthening and coming. Interesting it is not God here who destroys the wicked Assyrians, but the Babylonians. This gives us an idea of how the finally impenitent would be destroyed. Between 612 & 610 The combined forces of Babylon, Medes and Egypt defeated the Assyrians The description of Nahum’s destruction sounds very similar to that of Modern Babylon. Some of the same language is used. 18. Thus perished forever, the Assyrian Empire, after an independence of more than a thousand years; an ascendency of about three hundred and fifty years; and which had been built up and ruled by a succession of conquerors such as has never been in any other nation in the world except Rome. This serves as a prolepsis of hope for God ‘s people today.
- An end of the wicked and an end of sin. Glory to God for that assurance.
- Very solemn. As wicked as the city was in 760, they repented, and God spared them. What about us today? Take heed beloved.
