  • I saw a cartoon of a man & his wife leaving church. You could see the sign where it said: "Today's Sermon - The Ten Commandments." The man said: "Well, at least I haven't made any graven images."The command we consider the least relevant is the one that is the most often repeated in the rest of the OT.Our previous lesson considered the "Who" of worship. This lesson considers the "How" of worship. Most people don't think the second command is too important.God is very concerned with the "how" of worship. That is so, because your worship reflects your image of God.
  • 1. Not religious art, sculpture, paintings. Many churches refuse to have any religious symbols - even crosses on communion trays. (Dimmitt struggled with this when replacing 20 year old communion set. Didn't want crosses. I showed them the set we were replacing & it had crosses!)God actually commanded images in the OT. There were cherubs on the mercy seat, fruit on the tabernacle & angels in the temple.2. Not the worship of false gods. That was already dealt with in the first commandment. This commandment forbids representations of God.This was the first command Israel broke - before God even had a chance to put it in writing.
  • God gave the commands to Israel, and then called Moses up on Mount Sinai.Note that when Aaron fashioned an idol, he proclaimed a feast to the LORD - i.e. YHWHExo 32:5 NIV When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, "Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD."Exodus 32:5 NBLH Cuando Aarón vio esto, edificó un altar delante del becerro. Y Aarón hizo una proclama y dijo: "Mañana será fiesta para el SEÑOR."Israel was not trading YHWH for another god, but they were trading for a pagan way of worshipping the one true God.Read on to see how displeased God was with them.
  • Wouldn't a symbol to remind Israel of the presence of God help focus their minds on worship? The problem is that there is no likeness adequate to represent God.
  • God is Spirit. We tend to read this & move on to discuss acappella music & the weekly observance of the Lord's Supper. The woman in the text wanted to know where God lived - in Samaria or Judah; on Gerazim or Moriah. Why do people want a localized God? We want GPS (God Positioning System) so we can locate God.So we can know right where he is.So we can look good when we're around him.So we can live as we please when he's not around.
  • People have always wanted to have the ability to locate God. Remember Israel in the days of Eli:1 Samuel 4:1-4 NBLH La palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo Israel.
  • They were God's people and they had God's box.In battle, the Philistines killed 4,000.Israel took God's box into battle. Their idea was that God wouldn't let anything happen to his box.The Philistines were terrified at first. But they rallied & whipped Israel. They killed 30,000 & took the box.On that day God showed Israel that they couldn't manipulate him.God honored man by making us in his image. We dishonor God by trying to reduce him to our image.
  • The religious world doesn't have golden calves. But it does have institutional religion full of sanctuaries, statues & sacraments designed to reduce God to one place & time.Among us, we still have attitudes contrary to this command.
  • 1. People try to make something special of preachers. They try to turn us into priests between man & God. The preacher must be present if we're sick, distressed or troubled, because somehow the preacher is a little closer to God. That's nothing but a return to the concept of the priesthood. The NT says we are a spiritual priesthood.1 Peter 2:4-5 NIV As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-- 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.1 Peter 2:4-5 NBLH Y viniendo a El, como a una piedra viva, desechada por los hombres, pero escogida y preciosa delante de Dios, (5) también ustedes, como piedras vivas, sean edificados como casa espiritual para un sacerdocio santo, para ofrecer sacrificios espirituales aceptables a Dios por medio de Jesucristo.I'll be your prophet, but I can't be your priest.
  • 2. Change is regarded as an affront to God. People get all upset if you change the order of the assembly, time of assembly, location of assembly, dismiss evening assembly, etc. That's the same problem as the Pharisees had. They latched on to the Sabbath & lost sight of the God of the Sabbath. Mark 2:27 NIV Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. We're like Paul Newman in "Cool Hand Luke". "I don't care if it rains or freezes as long as I've got my plastic Jesus sitting on the dashboard of my car."We like to have God where we know just where he is & we're in control.
  • He is spirit & is not confined to one place & time.
  • We forget that God gave us the perfect image of himself.Colossians 1:15 NIV He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. Hebrews 1:3 NIV The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
  • If you want to worship God, look at Jesus.
  • Your image of God determines1. What you beget.
It’s not a matter of passing on guiltIt is not passing on condemnation, but consequences.
Each generation drifts further from God or draws closer to him than the generation before. Your children's future depends on the flow of your life.Metal images (e.g. golden calf) always follow bad mental images of God. It is vital that you pass on the right image of God to your children. How can we pass on a right image when we treat God as a landlord, where we only go to see him when the rent's due.The perfect image of God is Jesus Christ. Your relationship with him shapes your children's concept of and relationship to God.
  • 2. What you become. If you see God as a tyrant, you will become a legalist. If you see him as a doting grandfather, you become a libertine. You become like what you worship.

    1. 1. The Right Image<br />Exodus 20:4-6<br />
    2. 2. Exodus 20:4-6 NIV <br />"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.<br />
    3. 3. What is Being Prohibited?<br />
    4. 4. Exodus 32:1-5 NIV <br />When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, "Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has happened to him." Aaron answered them, "Take off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me." <br />
    5. 5. Exodus 32:1-5 NIV <br />So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, "Tomorrow there will be a festival to the LORD."<br />
    6. 6. Exodus 32:7-14 NIV <br />Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, 'These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'<br />
    7. 7. Exodus 32:7-14 NIV <br />"I have seen these people," the LORD said to Moses, "and they are a stiff-necked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation." But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God. "O LORD," he said, "why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? <br />
    8. 8. Exodus 32:7-14 NIV <br />Why should the Egyptians say, 'It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth'? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. <br />
    9. 9. Exodus 32:7-14 NIV <br />Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.'" Then the LORD relented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.<br />
    10. 10. Why this prohibition against images?<br />
    11. 11. John 4:24 NIV<br />God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."<br />
    12. 12. 1 Samuel 4:1-4 NIV <br />Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek. The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. <br />
    13. 13. 1 Samuel 4:1-4 NIV <br />When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, "Why did the LORD bring defeat upon us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord's covenant from Shiloh, so that it may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies."<br />
    14. 14. 1 Samuel 4:1-4 NIV <br />So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.<br />
    15. 15. How is this command violated today?<br />
    16. 16. Violations of the Second Command<br />
    17. 17. Violations of the Second Command<br />
    18. 18. What is our problem?<br />
    19. 19. We Do Not Understand God's Nature<br />
    20. 20. We Do Not Understand God's Nature<br />

    24. 24. Exodus 20:5-6 NIV<br />You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.<br />
    25. 25. Ezekiel 18:20 NIV<br />The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.<br />
    26. 26. Your image of God determines<br />
    27. 27. Psalms 115:2-8 NIV <br />Why do the nations say, "Where is their God?" Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. But their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. <br />
    28. 28. Psalms 115:2-8 NIV <br />They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell; they have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but they cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.<br />
    29. 29. Don’t fashion an image of God, but be fashioned in his image<br />
    30. 30. 2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV<br />And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.<br />
