Indie-rock originated in the UK in the 1980s and some of the most influential bands include Nirvana, Pavement, Joy Division, The Smiths, and Sonic Youth. Mise-en-scene, props, setting, and the artists' casual retro style are important for portraying the indie-rock genre in music videos. Narratives are also popular as they tell stories audiences can relate to and bring new meaning to lyrics. Sound design and editing techniques like diegetic sounds, fades, and special effects are used to convey emotion and make videos more interesting for audiences.

2. Indie-rock conventions
Mise en scene is a very important factor in the indie-rock genre. It helps to portray the
narrative a lot easier, with using just visual aspects. Indie artists often have a more casual
retro/vintage/casual look about them through their costumes and make up and this is
amplified in the music videos to portray them and their genre. Props and the setting are also
very important to make the video look more realistic.
The narrative has been increasingly popular to include in indie-rock music videos as it helps
to tell a story which the audience could relate to. Also it could bring many new meanings
about the lyrics for the audience. Narrative also makes the video more interesting as there
are a variety of shots, including performance shots being within the narrative shots.
For a music video sound is very important. If the music video adapts a narrative route it
might include more diegetic sound than the average mainstream video would include to
make it look more realistic. Sounds may overlap, for example: the non-diegetic sound could
be playing with diegetic sound as well, which fits in with the scene. Effects may be added to
the sound either to fade it or increase its volume to convey emotions.
Editing is also an important tool to make the video more interesting. Most indie genre videos
would have special affects to either make the scene run smoothly or to create the affect that
the audience are part of the music video. Shots are usually a reflection of the pace/beat of
the music , which links well with Andrew Goodwin’s theory.
